    Midwest dipped below -12 last week. We just put a little plastic over the coop and with the deep clean litter our 5 chickies were fine. They also had warm oatmeal in the morning. We reached 30 today!!! Praise God!! Looks like you all made it through the cold snap too! My kids absolutely love when you guys share chicken content 😊.

    A strand of incandescent (not LED) Christmas lights strung around the plants works great to add just enough heat.

  • @ryan_torres

    You probably won't see this comment but I'll shoot this out there anyway. Those stock tank heaters typically have a thermostat in em that activate just above freezing then turn off. That probably won't be enough. Also, in the spring time where fruit trees blossom too early and it freezes out, a lot of people actually put up strings of the old incandescent Christmas lights on their trees. (the big ones, not the mini ones) I have a feeling that if you were to hang some of those near the trees that may help. Also, don't open up the greenhouse at all if you can help it in the days leading up to the freeze.Good luck and sending out prayers for a minimal impact for you all!

    Try using the heat lamp in your greenhouse instead of the chicken coop. Heat lamps are dangerous in coops. Love the items in the winter launch. Yee yee.

    watch out for the dust from the straw bales with those warming lights. they scratch it up and the dust flies and hits that heat... you guys have had enough fires. I brought my chickens Inside... shower stalls are good, but don't let the grain get in the drains.. it swells and stops up the plumbing.

    I like the heat ring on the trashcan idea. Also looks like a perfect application for some solar panels. My wife got me a solar generator (4patriots) for Christmas, gonna run our travel trailer and im certain it would run your heater/heat ring. Also, a tip to get away from those hot heat rings, pick up a crockpot at your local goodwill. Along with a thermo switch (on at 35), set crockpot on the keep warm setting makes good water for the critters, not hot.

  • @eldenl1
    @eldenl1 9 місяців тому +2

    Those rings don't heat the water much above freezing. Anything that creates condensation, will cause frost to form on the plants.
    Could you use something like seed starter heat mats under the buckets, just to keep the soil warm? Then you could put blankets over the plants to keep frost off of them.

  • @donnaskin
    @donnaskin 9 місяців тому +12

    For the greenhouse:
    Get a couple cheap solar reflective survival blankets from the camping section use thumb tacks to place them covering the windows. The little heater should keep that area nice and toasty during the cold chill.

    Solar heat lamps like you put in the chicken coop would work perfectly for what you want to do. I live in Southwest Oklahoma and we experience the same weather craziness as you. The use of solar cuts down on your electric comsumption costs and stays with the sustainablility model of using a greenhouse. It call be a huge crap shoot in this crazy weather world of the south!

    Get warming matts for your plants. They are waterproof and should keep your plants warm enough and usually you can set them to be a certain degree's. Amazon has a lot of options in various sizes to fit your needs. It might be too late for this storm as its already passed but could be an idea for the future.

    In regards to your greenhouse. It doesn’t look like you have that much. I would just bring it all in the garage or in the house. I think that little effort would be better than the risk of a fire or an extremely high electric bill.

    Your idea sounds brilliant! I think it has been a week since you did this video bc tonight it is 19° but it feels like 9°. A little south of Atlanta, GA. Probably, will have single digits with - windchills tomorrow. It is susposed to be 50's and 60's have by the weekend. (This is Tuesday.) We are having high winds sustained are around 30 mph. Gusts at 40 mph or higher. It's crazy. I'm okay with it as long as nobody gets hurt from trees falling, etc. Y'all be safe! Please let us know how your science project works! The bottom of the planter that has the compost will throw off heat from low to the ground. The top section is 4’ tall planter has plants growing in it. The soil at the top of the planter is season compost safe to plant in. 🤟🏼
