How often do you replace your cycling shoes?

I have $50 MTB shoes from Decathlon (Canada) and it was basically my first set of clipless shoes. The advantage is for a beginner it's not an expensive investment when you first start using clipless. I have used them for 2 years now and about 5000km with no winter riding and could not be happier. For now I use them on my gravel bikes and my indoor trainer. My road bikes use Look Keo, with much better shoes from Specialized with carbon sole, but that's another story.

My shimano shoes were bought in 2009 - 14 years of cycling . Maybe 90,000 km in them, and they are holding up very well. Riding the valleys of Wales and the streets of Suzhou

Oh wow that's a buttload of miles! Do you do anything specific to care for them?

@@JMower Nothing at all, I have had one set of new cleats. My wife scrubs them down and leaves them in the sun to dry when they get too rank.

I replaced my shoes at around 8k km as well, they just broke. I bought the Suplest Road Performance and Mountain Performance. They have quite a big toe box and are wide. Perfect fit for me, but a bit expensive.

I own a pair of Specialized S-Works Recon shoes, which I bought for £233 just over a year ago and have done 10k - 12k... I use them on and off road as well as indoors and they are pretty much like new (no obvious signs of wear). I was always told its worth investing in a good pair of shoes (& Bib shorts). Enjoy the channel.

Nice that's exactly what I wanted to hear! Will probably pull the trigger on the recons. Cheers!

8000km is not a lot. Maybe for 25, but those have not held up well at all. I picked up a pair of shoes from decathlon (can't find them now) with a carbon composite sole for around 100$ and have done 10,000km in them in all conditions. The show zero wear except on the soles from walking. Bonus they had bolt holes for both SPD and SPD-SL cleats. Only downside I can find is they tend to take a day or longer to dry out if you get them wet.

Never had a problem with anything from decathlon, I have one of their winter jackets and it's much better than the other brands I've tired. Will definitely look into the decathlon shoes too!

my jaw dropped when you showed how much the bend! You're goin to be legit shocked when you get a decent pair of shoes in how much better power transfer you will be able to put down due to their stiffness (which is the entire point of good shoes).

Hopefully the new shoes will be arriving this week, looking forward to comparing them!
Maybe there'll be a few 'free' watts to be had there!

Try a road shoe with a road cleat. They feel stiffer and a bit more responsive.

I've tried road cleats before, but I just couldn't get comfortable with clipping in and out. I like how easy the SPDs are to use, just stamp your foot down and go!

I have a fizik pair with about 4k or 5k miles on them and they are still like new. Don’t go sworks. Way overpriced and only paying for the brand. Think I paid $120 us for them.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  9 місяців тому

$120 is a good price actually. Unfortunately most of the brands have to be imported to where I live (china), so they end up being about 50% more expensive than the normal price. I managed to find a pair of specialized for about 1600rmb (about $200), so I'm hoping I'll get a lot of years out of them and they'll be worth the money

Some people swear by shoe dryers, maybe that is in order if you are doing MTB and rain riding?

Good idea, my current solution is putting them by the AC vent on the balcony, or if I'm really desperate just using a hairdryer 😂
