I am new at jazz guitar, and this is a revelation. I finally understood the concept of Barry Harris chromatic scale. Now I just have to practice for a few hundres of hours. :-) Thank you for this great video!
@@pffddspc thanks so much for the support! I hope you enjoy the courses and get a lot out of them. If you ever have questions or need more, I offer video exchange lessons on truefire as well. Thanks again!
Hi David, thanks for your excellent, clear jazz guitar videos! I’ve known about the Barry Harris chromatic scale for a while, but it was this video that opened up my horizons on how to make use of it to improvise. I do have a question… could you share the tool you’re using for the music notation (with the synched cursor) inserted in the video? Thanks again!
Glad you found it helpful! It's a brilliant system for understanding chromaticism in jazz. I use sibelius to write the notation, and then I actually animate the cursor manually in my editing software. It's a little tedious, but it gives a really clean result.
@alvarorojas225 my pleasure! Glad you found it helpful! What about it was most illuminating for you? Anything you'd want to see expanded on in future content?
The directions of playing up or playing up and then down, is this mandatory for when we want to start improvising over a standard? Do we need to maintain those directions in our playing? Or is that more so just to get the timing under our fingers?
@austinjoiner5968 nothing is mandatory it's really just a way to practice getting the material in your hands and ears. A good solo has a sort of "shape" to it as well and we want to try to practice shaping our lines in this way. Hope that helps.
All the written material for the entire channel is available over at my patreon page. The link to that is in the video description. Thanks for watching!
Great as always man, just imo maybe a little more top end on the tone, on the examples. Ill get on the Patreon soon woops the last example etude sounded better tone wise imo
Great lesson thanks ! Question off the topic, how do you add the nice thumb nail and text on your screen? Caught my eye immediately. I'm looking at other videos of yours. Great job!
@NelsonRiverosMusic oh I actually use canva for that as well. I use vegas edit for video editing and the plugin selections are not as nice as Adobe so I just make stuff bespoke. Takes a little extra time but it's a cleaner result for less money than Adobe costs per month
Haha! I do actually. Two ways to do that are 1: go to my website (in the description) and book directly there or two you can subscribe to my patreon as a "jazz luminaire" tier patron and receive a private lesson monthly as part of you subscription package. Thanks!
Huh. Never really considered that. You mean in the channel branding or in the video or both? Name is David Shorr btw! Thanks for watching and big thanks for the feedback.
Very good lesson. Can’t help but call out the presenters resemblance to Robert Downey, Jr. if Tony Stark played jazz guitar be would be an even greater super hero. Thanks and cheers!

Very good advice. I am a bass player and this stuff is very helpful for jazz soloing. By the way, nowhere do you mention your name. Pity.
