A person is using the reins and his voice to guide the horses. Horses are smarter but they must have instruction. Guiding horses to back up a trailer is harder than backing up a truck and trailer. 🙂
We’re on the island for a wedding at Mission Point this weekend and walked past your grandmother’s house this afternoon. So fun to walk around the island and try to spot your designs. The Iroquois Hotel is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing our beautiful Mackinac Island with the world.
This property is the most beautiful and natural makeover I have ever seen. I would give up green grass if I had the possibility of a woodland area on my property. You make miracles happen!
My front yard is woodland, total shade under maple trees. It can be hard to plant in due to roots and in the fall, raking around all the plants is harder than raking grass. BUT I love my shade and garden.
This comment was intended for a previous show and connected to the Good Hart program. Good Hart is very scenic with a tunnel of trees road into Mackinac city. Beautiful job on this residence Jack and team.
I LOVE those down lights! Jack you are certainly the KING of ground covers I have learned SO much from you and intend to use what I’ve learned in my little garden! The video with drone shots is SPECTACULAR, keep those coming please!
You are always so entertaining. Enjoy every video you put out. Keep them up. So calming in this world of turmoil. Add more tours if various garden bith up north as nd down in the south when you are in Florida. Keep up the good work.
Great! We love pacasandra....had it in the yard of the first house we bought in Cleveland Ohio over 50 years ago. The previous owner had put it in......it was the greatest ground cover....like a carpet of beautiful dark green, beautifully snapped leaves and would also get small little tiny flowers in part of the year...
Just fabulous Jack! It's always a challenge to make woodland gardens to first appear authentic....as if they were always there. You guys' work is perfection! Thanks for sharing.
That was a very short lunch break. Loved the idea of the moss "cement" just genius. But my favourite part was seeing the chipmunk (I think that's what it was as we do not have them in Australia). Love from sunny Sydney.
This may be your best, most informational video yet! From landscape planning from trees to ground cover, to incorporating bulbs and cover perennials, to appropriate down lighting (light pollution, ugh), to harvesting moss, I learned a great deal! I live in the woods of SW Michigan 6 months and just north of Naples 6 months where I plan to grow orchids on palms next year. Keep this type of videos coming Jack!!
Great video. I love how you not only show the landscape, but also share lots of little tips along the way. I wish I would have known to mulch before planting ground covers before I planted. Do you ever use Canadian wild ginger as a ground cover? That has become one of my favorites. It has a largish leaf, the deer leave it alone, it spreads well without being invasive and shades out weeds really well. It's just about perfect. The flowers are hidden under the leaves and are not showy, but who needs flowers?
I love the low maintenance in this garden, I'm approaching retirement, this garden has definitely given me some food for thought, thank you for sharing, be well and I'll look forward to your next video 😊🌻
Many years ago we seen Jack working in a garden on Market St. My son pointed to Jack and said “look dad he has the same pruners that you have.” Jack heard my son and came over and spoke with him. My son thought it was cool that he could work in his Indiana Jones hat.
Gorgeous plus I’m really liking the lunch time Italian music in the background 😂. You are an amazing group and you beautify everything. The owners of these cottages are so fortunate to have you all 🌷🌷
Wow! Only a year old and it looks amazing. I love that there is no grass to mow anywhere. Just an awesome design and layout. The fire pit area will fit in so nicely. Great job! You have a great team working with you. Hugs! I would love to visit there some day.
Hi Jack! Everything is just beautiful! I really like the firepit area and the pathway to it. You and your team/crew so excellent work. Your videographer is top notch, too. Loved the blooper at the end. Thank you so much for sharing!
So glad you went back to show us, I loved what you did with this garden. I'm guessing the wildflower back garden is lovely now too. The camera person did a really great job, I liked how they got down with you and close to plants you pointed out.
Beautiful explained video of what you do and why! I now understand that my ground covers need to have compost and fertilizer mixed in for them to spread better. Also, the plant bubble that pops up is very helpful just wish the image was larger
We just had a large aquascape pondless waterfall put in next to our flagstone fire pit here in mid Michigan. It looks so similar to your fire pit and things. We need to finish landscaping in our huge backyard next summer. I love your ideas. Would love for you to pop in sometime, if you could?
Great to see the property a year later. It has definitely become even more beautiful. Maybe we can even see it again next year! What kind of ferns are the yellow green ones that have an upright form? Great choice of plants as usual!
Fabulous ideas, Jack. So genius, but lots of work!!! I would love to enjoy such a shady garden with a woodland feel. Moss detail is cool too! Enjoy the process on your beloved magical isle...
OH my gosh! Ok,..this was Awesome Jack,...and it really NEEDS to be said: YOUR CAMERA MAN IS OUTSTANDING!!! His footage is genius , so successful in bringing to us, both the big and small picture of your projects! Such a talent!! IT has really brought your videos from good to FABULOUS!!!!
thank you for this video! I"m doing a flagstone Tuscan like area under my sugar maples since grass doesn't grow well anyway. I have natural moss from my yard that I am going to use. I appreciate knowing how to propagate it for between the stones.
I was curious if all (or any) of the elaborate gardens require irrigation? That seems like the hardest part and ALL landscaping in southern CA require irrigation. It would be SO nice to live somewhere it wasn't necessary.
Jack, I've watched this several times. I love the idea of underplanting Spring bulbs. I could swear when I watched it once, you mentioned paper whites under hydrangeas (I can't find that part now). I can't find ANY info on planting paper whites in a landscape, everything is about forcing them to bloom indoors in Winter. Did you really underplant hydrangeas with paper Whites? If they work in U.P., they'll work where I am in central Wis. I'd love a video about underplanting with bulbs, as well as ground cover to suppress weeds and make mulching every year unnecessary. Thanks!
That soil looks wonderful. 🪱 Have you toured the "soil factory" before? I'd be interested in seeing how it's all made on, and "recycled" back into the island.
Looks beautiful but the mosquitos and other biting insects are gonna love that fire pit area as well -unless you don't have that problem on MacKinac Island?
What is the 6ft. shrub behind you when you're talking about the astilbe at 4:50? I need some woodland shade screening plants. I'm zone 7B/8A. Love the pathway and woodland patio. Can't wait to see more.
How big do the junipers get? Are they going to overgrow their space?😊💖I used to have one, it was 9 or 10 foot wide. Thanks for sharing your beautiful gardens!!!🌼🐝🦋🌸😊💖
That ending was so funny. LOL! I learned something about using & distributing the moss. Cool idea! DO YOU HAVE ANY NICKNAMES? Mac Jack? Island Jack? Barnwell Does Well! :D :D :D
Very nice! Please consider not using vinca which spreads to woodlands and squeezes out native species plants. It is very invasive and spreads underground so very difficult to get rid of. Otherwise so beautiful.
I guess my caladium isn’t so special if you look at the white ones at the beginning of this video. I remember when they were just placing the boulders for this yard.
i love the way the horses backed in the trailer, much better than a person could
A person is using the reins and his voice to guide the horses. Horses are smarter but they must have instruction. Guiding horses to back up a trailer is harder than backing up a truck and trailer. 🙂
Love Woodland planting that's how our place is and it's beautiful and low maintenance
Love everything you teach... good tip on the moss spores blended in. Love the horse shots as well! 🍂🌾

Brilliant techniques for planting the ground-covers and green joinery. Thank you!
your videos are sooo chilled and calming, but super engaging at the same time😍
Thanks, Jack, very enjoyable, wishing YOU a great day.
Another beautiful job by you and your crew. Thanks for the video. I thoroughly enjoy them.
The horses are the life of the island.

Me too🙌

Next year goals!!
So smart with the ground cover plants! Beautiful plants!
Your vision is inspiring. The editing has come a long way since your 1st videos, good job
Will be collecting native mosses today. Fabulous. For a shady patio. Great idea, woods right outside my door!
Hi Jack! Another Breathtaking Landscape Job!! I love how much YOU love what you do!! Have a wonderful day and I will see you in the next one! :)
Thanks!!
Gorgeous landscaping! That astilbe! 😍😍
You landscape like a dream-weaver, Jack!
Love love love this woodland space! great fireplace too! Thanks for sharing, lol stayed to the end ;)
I get a lot of enjoyment watching the horses as well as the humor Jack adds to each show. I love Mackinac Island. Jack helps keep it so beautiful.

Should be "shaped" leaves
Beautiful and to have all those plants instead of grass! Jack you are a awesome landscaper!
Love your videos! Keep them coming!!
Just fabulous Jack! It's always a challenge to make woodland gardens to first appear authentic....as if they were always there. You guys' work is perfection! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for showing us the update! I remember watching this yard get planted and wondered if we’d see it again. Absolutely stunning work.
Another home run Jack.
And the bases were loaded.
Grand Slam by Jack Barnwell Designs.
Woodland wonderland! So love the natural yet thoughtfully designed combination of woodland plants!
Really nice Jack! Such nice environment to work in! You guys work very hard but are truly blessed to be in such a beautiful place! Hugs
That's some good looking soil😁😁😁😁😁 Love the ending!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 If you don't have fun while working the day gets very very long...😁 God bless

What a beautiful, natural look. And no mowing !!! That fire pit area is going to be their happy place. Always excellent, stunning work !!
Very cool showing us how you install your work. Thank you

Yes! We love wild ginger~~ another great groundcover for sure!
Thanks for the video, Jack. I think the special effects add a lot to the info and enjoyment!
This was so great to see the property after 1 year. As always, I really enjoyed your video! I'm a Michigander and your videos are so helpful!
Great seeing a lot of the behind the scenes work. Your videographer is GREAT!
I love the low maintenance in this garden, I'm approaching retirement, this garden has definitely given me some food for thought, thank you for sharing, be well and I'll look forward to your next video 😊🌻
We are headed to the Island tomorrow!!! Looking forward to seeing some of your work!

Absolutely stunning; love the stone work. All looks so natural.

Did he make a chair from a wheel barrel? That is so creative!
My husband used to do that! Lol
We need your talent here in California ❣️
Yes, just for what I think you would enjoy. It means chosen thoughtfully.😉. Sometimes Jack isn’t as good as other times.
Such a great video, thank you for sharing.
Just Beautiful 🌼
What a dream to have soil like that! I have hard clay!!!
The completed project is BEAUTIFUL! GREAT JOB CREW!

Well made video. Thank you!
Looks beautiful! I’m hoping to visit next year
It looks magical ✨
So pretty.

We’ll do that!
Love it!
What boots are you wearing in this video Jack?
Stunning design.
What type ferns did you plant on this job?
Would you concider doing a job in Eau Claire Wisconsin. I would love to have you do some flagstone work
We do travel jobs yes~~
Would love to know what variety of Juniper that was at the beginning in amongst that lovely natural planting scheme of ferns, hosta and astilbe etc.☺
Looks beautiful but the mosquitos and other biting insects are gonna love that fire pit area as well -unless you don't have that problem on MacKinac Island?
Not so much~~~ we have 🦇 ;)
Does this garden have a watering system? I have discovered the hard way, trees take all the water from the earth😏 This is beautiful
It does yes~
What is the 6ft. shrub behind you when you're talking about the astilbe at 4:50? I need some woodland shade screening plants. I'm zone 7B/8A. Love the pathway and woodland patio. Can't wait to see more.
Might be a service berry shrub
How big do the junipers get? Are they going to overgrow their space?😊💖I used to have one, it was 9 or 10 foot wide. Thanks for sharing your beautiful gardens!!!🌼🐝🦋🌸😊💖
These mint julep type don’t get as big- and we keep them trimmed back hard if need be~~
That ending was so funny. LOL! I learned something about using & distributing the moss. Cool idea!

Which fern did you use. Love the lime green color. Love your landscape and fire pit.
Lady fern, maidenhair fern, ostrich fern
@@JackBarnwellDesign Thank you

No voles?

Is it Mackinac Island or Mackinaw Island??
With a “c”
