One thing about sans that is really cool is that he uses his knowledge of his world against you. Dodging attacks, not giving immunity frames, and attacking out of the bullet box all while crap talking you are some examples that shows that while not overwhelmingly powerful due to his low stats he can still be a threat.
His boss fight i think was pretty underwhelming, i don't know if it's because i played alot of top down 2d games with a keyboard that i'm good with undertale's control but yeah, sans has no place on every "top 20 hardest bosses" like you never see abs rad on there or like the scav king from rain world

Fun fact: Asgore is also aware of resets. In which he is unaware of them happening although he knows that the concept of a reset is something (presumably the souls) were capable of.
i'd say he somehow stopped chara from resetting, since they also have a dt soul. maybe when he got ill with the buttercups, chara wanted to reset to fix it, but was convinced by asgore not to because he didn't want to forget them. that's me speculating though.

Another thing with Mirage, growing up in the Titan Fall Universe, his 3 other brothers all went off to war and died. This obviously took a big toll on both of them. And Mirages mother, slowly began to mistake Elliott for her other sons too. I think his backstory along with his personality is why he's one of my favorite characters from the game with only tragic backstory characters.
That's not exactly true. You have it right. His brothers did fight in the war, but his brothers were never *confirmed* dead. They're just listed as MIA and are presumed dead. Letting there be potential for one if not all of them to be alive. Another sad thing is that Mirage's dad is also a deadbeat, yet he still misses him. Also, apparently, Mirage has an uncle who's a pilot. Which has always been an interesting tidbit to me.
I'm really glad he's being recognized less as "hidden strongest character", and more as "the only reason his fight is this hard, or even difficult at all, is because he breaks practically all the rules there" Also, since Megalovania isn't being spammed literally everywhere now, people won't have the excuse I did for hating a game they know practically nothing about, which is another good thing.
While I do think the internet misunderstands the Sans fight, I think the fact they do misunderstand it as overwhelming force in the first place shows that Sans was quite damn good at said manipulation
People understand it as overwhelm powering and manipulation honestly. The attack is on multiple fronts. He uses his udnerstanding of the 'gameyness' of his reality to screw with you, even going far as to attack you in your action menu. He screws with you mentally, putting your down, revealing information, mocking your, teasing you, compeltely fucking with you. But it doesn't change, he is also overwhelmingly powerful. A weird way to think it, maybe he put all his stats from his Health into everything else. Becoming a overwhelming glass cannon. We gotta remember that this isn't the first time sans was tormenting and overpowered an immortal. Flowey is likely more powerful than most monsters in the underground. He was manipulating time as well. but he also fears sans deeply, more than he fears anything else.
That’s also the reason I prefer deltarune Toby fox make sure his new game are actually funny for shets and giggles not the internet edgy boy stuff. For them we are beyond comprehension even chara takes control we can just uninstall and reinstall wipe everything clean. Sans “know” he is insignificant, he could never win. The sans fight is hard and he seems strong because he was pushed to his very limit after you killed EVERYONE he loved and cared for. If you put another character (except papyrus he would never even think of killing you) in that situation they would probably be way stronger than sans because of the situation they were put in. In canon sans is just lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, funny, etc... but a lot people in fanon represent him as one of the most powerful characters. Also flowey does not *FEAR* sans. He *HATES* sans because of his personality and his funny ways to annoy him. He has probably killed him in one of his MANY resets for fun but still hates him due to the fact that he's really good at being annoying (like me!). Sorry for mucho texto but i had to say this.
@@Trollboi_farded69420 The clip in the meme says "chucklehead" What you maybe referring to is "Think fast chucklenuts!" Both memes are easily confused with one another
Part of the beauty of dangerous comic relief is that you rarely think of them as a threat. Nobody started the Sans fight blind expecting to get their sh*t kicked in by the first attack. It's completely unexpected, making them so much more dangerous. Also, pointing out how Sans manipulates you is actually genius, I'm surprised I never thought of that before. Edit: 1) Holy crap that's a lot of likes. 2) The heck is happening in the replies?
To be fair, sans' boss fight is easier than base radiance from hollow knight , i saw people say that what made it hard were the random patterns which uhhhhh i mean every video game boss has those, except for souls like bosses, you can manipulate their behaviour by moving around, or just not moving
Fun fact: papyrus actually makes more puns than sans in phone calls, usually more clever too. He really just thinks sans' are misplaced during serious situations or just bad
Another thing about Mirage is that it’s shown that he himself is starting to suffer from the early effects of dementia. It’s why he constantly stutters and repeats his words.
Ig? But maybe that's just his weaker side showing. He's in reality incompetent so I don't think that's him suffering from dementia but him showing bits of who he really is, not a show off but a pretender
Yknow i would love to have an animation where mirage just stops talking out of anger. And just slowly walks toward a dude with some glitched clone effect
One correction about Sans: he doesn’t die because he’s sleepy. He actually does Napstablook’s thing with saying “zzz” to manipulate Chara to attack. He dodges, but then Chara cheats and attacks again. He did get tired, but he wasn’t actually ready to stop. Also, he is still awesome.
Yeah, he explained sans press well. Most non-UT fans think: "oh how dare you kill my brother I'm gonna give you the bad time ever!!!" but it obviously goes a lot deeper than that
He still overplayed Sans's awareness. Sans only connected the dots from the déjà vu. He only knows that someone can save and reload, not that he's in a game.
Yeah ngl I feel like just the Undyne fight and obviously the Sans fight is why most people do genocide, and Battle Against a True Hero and Megalovania are some of the best tracks in the OST
It is also one that confused me a lot. Because it is so incredibly well-known, mostly cuz of sans. But it's also not used as much as other tropes in media. Underrated? Overrated? Or something else? And I mean as in side-characters. Not main characters. With main-characters it's pretty obvious.
The best part about Mirage is when he’s alone with no squad. No eyes are on him canonically in the games. As who is more interesting, the guy running alone, or the 4 squad fight on the other side of the map? So, he’s quiet. Only muttering to himself during voice-lines. It’s sad to see him like that, but he’s still going.
Yeah it makes me feel lonely and worried, I’ve had matches played where it’s just me as Mirage and he sounds so hard on himself sometimes, or even worried that it’s not going to end well for him. Kinda like it’s turning into a horror movie without squad mates to joke with to distract him.
I feel like Bill Cipher might have started off a bit like this too. Not as much because everybody's told to be wary of him and take him seriously from the start, so you do eye him with suspicion from the get go, but I feel like if we compare how he's introduced to were he ends up at we can kind of see a similar arc. The characters themselves at first, despite the warnings on the journal, treat him no different than any other monster they meet, so you are inclined to do the same because sure he's supposed to be a powerful being but he's also a small, funny triangle guy with a top hat that says funny things and does silly tricks so whatever! And then like, things escalate pretty quickly, every episode he's in we see a slightly more intimidating version of him until he completely takes over.
10:16 you know the extent of the genius of undertale cannot be understated. The fact that Sans is a comic relief, not because he just happens to be a fun loving wacky boi, but because he knows that if he can appeal to *you* the player, he can help save everyone. So he makes puns and gaffs, he probably made that frisk-shaped lamp, who knows? He puts on a show so that maybe you dont end it all.
I honestly picked Mirage at first simply because "hey, I recognize him as Kyle Crane" ...He's now my favorite character in the Apex lore simply because of how relateable his demenor is.
I always found Sans' power to be incredibly funny, as his main ability is most likely a karmatic-related ability, meaning that it's only so hard due to the very specific circumstances of "one small child murdered an entire species for the funny" and if you didn't decide to murder an entire species it would be easier to fight him
his very power is that he's judge, jury, & executioner and is terrifyingly good at fulfilling that role. he isn't strong but if he's punishing someone he is great at pissing them of & frustrating them till they give up or beat him after hour's of time wasted to practicing his fight. now that i think about it he isn't punishing frisk he's punishing the player and stopping them from getting the ending and getting rewarded for there curiosity for choosing to go out of there way to kill all character's for no reason except why not or to see what would happen, it can't be for just exp as once at a good level the player just could stop and you're actively going out of you're way to kill them all so the player is actively choosing the bad route. killing sans is the only satisfaction for going down the bad route (and it isn't much of a satisfactory death anyway's as he just disappears after moving of screen) as the ending doesn't seem to me (a person who has never played undertale) to be a satisfying end to the game, you just ether die and the world end's or the world just end's with you're involvement.

@@Scarther because he wanted to make you frustrated, if he just made you bored nothing would change and he'd still fall asleep at some point, at least when he talks shit he's got a chance at making you feel bad
Something I hate about how the fandom has flanderized Sans is that people seemingly overlook that despite being lazy and seemingly being somewhat apathetic due to his knowledge, he is by no means detached or disillusioned. He deeply cares about his friends and loved ones, to the point where he’ll keep his promise to Toriel and only step in when it’s clear he has no other option. This isn’t even some deep analysis either, most of this is blatantly obvious or told to you by the game, but the fact that Undertale’s fandom is at least 75% secondaries at this point makes people just ignore that in favor of “le depressed edgy glowing eye skeleton bad time emo boy” bastardized version of Sans. Same applies to Papyrus, with people ignoring that he’s not some innocent pure oblivious dope, and that he’s clearly aware of what Sans can actually do (“IS SANS PRANKING YOU ACROSS TIME AND SPACE?”) And the evidence subtly sprinkled throughout the game that he’s far more powerful than he lets on. If anything, the idea that he’s aware of Sans’s power and potential makes his comedic overreactions to his brother’s laziness that much more hilarious and interesting.
its beyond me how people cant seem to find a balance between "apathetic jokester" and "depressed dude who cares a lot about his friends and family" to a certain degree, hes both. but a big chunk of interpretations i see of him massively overdo either one or the other. its very rarely a good blend of both and its annoying.
I'd say he's more... Apathetic? Maybe somewhat depressed, but not much, it's clear he cares about everyone a great deal. I honestly have no idea where the edgy part came from, his character is already badass enough as it is but ok. However, it also seems like he's known about the resets for a looong time (maybe Flowey?) so he just kinda... Doesn't care anymore? Like, he said it himself after all "Honestly, it makes it kinda hard to give it my all" There are many possible responses to the revelation that nothing you do really matters and your destiny is outside of your own control. Sans decided to choose the most Sans approach possible. *Viving*
The thing about Sans' fight though is that it is this big epic struggle where he shoots you with lasers and slams you into bone walls. It IS a struggle, for both you and him. He's trying to be as frustrating as possible. The combination of his ridiculous attacks, his menu attacks, his commentary, his reminders to you about your first couple of deaths, him killing you upon sparing him, and even his last bit of dialogue when he walks off screen is all made to make you feel sad, annoyed, and frustrated. That is the whole point of the genocide run. To make you feel generally bad. Good video.
I like the fan created interpretation of Sans, but it is definitely a pleasure to see someone appreciate the original version of the story, and understand the intentions of the character. One of my favourite characters ever.
Ye it's also great because it makes the story of undertale more whole, instead of a bunch of fan theories or sequels or ❗️GaStEr❗️ needed to complete the picture of sans' backstory. Also the fact I've never heard of this accurate interpretation before is another testimont to the writing of undertale
12:59 I guess the reason why it’s not the wits that is the hyped prowess is the fact that the tricks were so well preformed that no one even caught on in hindsight until now.
For me, Sans feels almost unrecognizable when I watch Fan animations about him on UA-cam. The internet has always portray him devastated at loss of his brother by making him cry or wearing his brother's scarf while fighting the player in the genocide route. However that's only because of how unsatisfied people feel when Sans reacts to Papyrus's death in the game. In the genocide route, Sans barely appears until the end of the game and he doesn't even specifically mention his death which everyone was expecting to hear. However what if you JUST kill papyrus. Some players curious enough or wanting a more satisfying reaction will try this unique route but Sans pretends like nothing is wrong for rest of the playthrough until you get to the Judgement Hall when out of nowhere he confronts you about his death. That is by FAR the scariest scene ever in the game. There is no music, no sound effects, just the emotionless glare of Sans just before he disappears. He will ask if you should always do the right thing, and in response with a yes or a no, he absolutely makes you feel horrible. Instead of giving you the satisfaction of him mourning the whole game he manipulates you by thinking he doesn't know what's going on only to make you feel like crap for killing his brother just out of curiosity and satisfaction. One of the scariest things about Sans is how he subverts expectations. That's one of the reasons I love his character so much. He completely had me shocked in multiple different scenarios. For me, this is just another level on how brilliant his character is and makes you recognize how much he manipulates the player. Rad Chad, thank you for this analysis video. It made me see Sans' character on an entire new level.
Agree that Sans and most characters really are portrait very badly by the fandome, but i want to make a small correction, if you try a run were you just kill Papyrus Sans will not go as if nothing had happen, he actually desapears c¿almost completly from the game until he judges you, not talking or even letting you see him whit the one exception of the syren battle were if you turn it into a concert, the text says "A hooded figure watches the commotion from afar". instread of Sans selling tickets to everyone as he would normally do.
@tadeolaguarda6965 Thank you for correcting me. I think that makes Sans more scary as a character. The fact that he just disappeared would definitely be very concerning from the player's perspective.
@@omarsharifnajafli7342 Question- and not intentionally disrespectful even though I know that's how it will come across as such: How much did you watch of the vid before commenting this?
One thing that never gets old about this play on the trope is that there's some level of misdirection. Because a lot of audiences see a goof and think low intelligence or non-threatening (and it's plausible characters in-story will think so, too.) So when their actions prove them to be cunning it really throws that perception off kilter. Which befits a manipulator type like Sans very well! In his case, he's very intentionally using the image of comic relief to his advantage, in part for this reason. Great video!
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO NOTICED MIRAGES TRUE NATURE!!! It may seem like I'm overreacting here, but Mirage is probably one of my favorite videogame characters of all time. He has so much depth and tragedy, yet hides it under a vale of fained confidence and tomfoolery. Everyone underestimates him and thinks hes weak. They look at his surface value without knowing how much hes been through and how much pain he's in. In spite of all of the suffering he goes through, he continues on. Not for himself, but for his mother. He can't let her lose her only son, and he can't let her forget him either. Its beautiful. @@Glorp67 I disagree about the gray area. I thought Canonically, they were literally the manifestation of violence. Also I always felt WE are the ones who possessed and basically the game is , do you give control back to Frisk or give it to Chara? Theres a popular fan theory that Chara is the narrator, but I always hated that theory. It made no sense since Chara's text is always red when theyre in control. I prefer the theory that Frisk is the narrator and that is why they try to guilt you into being better person so they get the ending they want. Especially since Frisk is never Frisk, they never have a name, UNTIL you do a True Pacifist run.
@@angelicambyence Well heres some pointers BASICALLY i think Chara is the narrator. Her text is only red BECAUSE of how WE corrupted her with our determination and LOVE. Im not good at explaining it but I think that chara is just kinda chilling at the start. Its the players choice to do genocide or pacifist and if we show mercy and dont corrupt her then yeah. And during genocide we show Chara that murder is GOOD that it’s JUSTIFIED and she thinks such. So if we deny her offer at the end then she takes control cause thats what she was CONDITIONED to do About frisk: I dont think Frisk is really Frisk. They are simply a blank slate for us. We CHOOSE their own actions. Frisk isn’t responsible for anything we do. Thats why Flowey tells us to let them be happy cause after the pacifist route they are somewhat free from our control. i personally feel like even if your impression of sans is tainted by how the fandom portrays him, playing the game for the first time will even still perfectly set him up as a character, as even in his very first scene he's subverting the sort of expectation the fandom may have given you. starting out as serious, even a bit menacing, building up to the tension of him approaching you, until he reveals himself from the darkness with a whoopee cushion. it feels almost intended to subvert the expectation you may have gotten from all the fanart of him as this powerful, tragic character.
the whoopee cushion scene is so good because it kinda feels like toby planned that u as the player would eventually try the genocide route, regret it, reset, and come right back to this moment with newfound genuine fear of him now that you’ve seen the extent of his hidden strength. absolutely brilliant
I know this has been a lot of the comments here LOL but yeah very glad that there are still some people who understand Sans in the right way. I've always liked and agreed with the idea that he isn't nice to Frisk solely because Toriel asked him to, but also partially because he wants to get on their good side so they will be kind and get the best ending possible. As much as people see his boss fight as this awesome serving of karmic justice that will finally stop your rampage, in reality it has prevented far less genocide routes than Sans's personality and likability. The number of times I've seen someone talking about how they quit genocide from not being able to beat Sans is very very low compared to all the times I've seen posts talking about not even wanting to start it or stopping at Papyrus because they don't have the heart to go through with it. By the time you get to the Sans fight its somewhat fun for a lot of players and Sans's fate is already sealed. Great video also! Really liked the Spot coverage since I'm a big Spider-verse fan as well, was a huge fan of the most recent one in particular
So what’s his reason for fighting assuming he’s aware of this is he just trying to make you feel like shit the entire time so you restart and get the good ending or is he just desperate
@@bahnankhayre9534 both He knows that the only way he can beat you is by either by making you feel bad for what you've done, or making you rage quit, and either die permanently or reset out of frustration
I think its worth noting that sans doesn't remember LOADS and RESETS. He only has small deja vu like the rest. However, he does have knowledge of them to a degree, and hes also good at reading faces, which is why he knows how many times you've died against him. Just kinda neat imo
Wrong. It's pretty debateable because you can easily interpret either way. We don't know which one is for certain because the undertale is pretty vague. Who says don't remember resets or loads is just as fanon as the other.
@@sonicthehedgehog1606 that's dumb. It's quite easy to understand, and not at all vague. Multiple characters throughout Undertale react like they've seen you before, or they think they might have, or have a feeling like they have after a basic reset. Toriel is a prime example when asking for your favorite flavor of pie. Flowey is the only one who truly remembers Loads and Resets (chara aswell), as he litteraly directly comments on them to you and even manipulates the files themselves at the end of the Neutral route. However, other characters like Alphys, Sans and even possibly Asgore can have at least knowledge of the existence of Loads and Resets. (Asgore acknowledges the fact he's "killed" you before if you talk to him, and Sans explains the timeline observations in his boss battle. With Alphys having notes and studies of DETERMINATION). in the case of Sans, he does not possess the memory qualities like Flowey does. He shares the same deja vu type experiences as most other characters in the game. In the boss battle, he reads your expression to see how many times you've supposedly died, but he always repeats his dialogue in the boss, which proves he has no memory of the encounter (Flowey, in his Asriel boss, the only one who does remember besides Chara, does not repeat dialogue after you're defeated, because he knows hes explained it to you already. And in other neutral routes, he repeats himself for the sake of simplicity, for the games sake. But he still comments on it). Sans reads your face, he doesnt remember. Flowey is also the only character to do something completely different in a second playthrough depending on what you do prior, such as straight up not appearing in the beginning if you kill him in the prior Neutral route, because he directly remembers, unlike the rest. not that hard to figure out if you dive into the lore and piece things together.
@@sonicthehedgehog1606if sans remembered other timelines then why would he keep saying the same jokes every time you reset rather than making new ones to keep you invested? Or better question, why does he question how you knew to turn out to shake his hand before he says to? If he remembered that you've met before and thst he's done it before then he has no reason to question it
This was literally the reason Avi kept pushing for him. Avi has always been super nostalgic for 90s Spider-Man (hence why he pushed for Venom in SM3) and if you watch The Spot's episode there, you realize that despite being a joke character, neither Spider-Man nor Kingpin really have any real means of fighting him. The writers actually had to give him a love interest Kingpin could hold at gunpoint because he was too OP. His origin comic run had a similar problem when they realized the sheer effort it took for Spidey to land even a single punch against him, so they just wrote him to give up after getting hurt even once.
I knew about the spot before spiderverse but it was just "Oh yeah that guy... He sure is... a guy" Like, I knew who he was, but I knew little to nothing about him
I knew about him since I was little, because I had this Spider-Man picture book that was essentially a compilation of early Spider-Man stories rewritten for little kids. First some reason the Spot's origin was one of them.
Another good example similarly to Spot is Wheatley from Portal 2. You spend the first half of the game with him following as a somewhat useless comic relief, then stabs you in the back as soon as he achieves power
This is even deeper than that when you realize that Wheatley’s betrayal is a direct result of him being designed to make terrible decisions. He’s not betraying you because you’re actually “selfish” like he says you are, he’s designed to think that because it’s in his programming to be incredibly stupid lol
Dispute the humor, this video taught me a lot about comic relief. I’ve been struggling to properly integrate funny characters into my story I’ve been writing, but I think after watching this I’ll have an easier time.
Because you'll probably never read, The wandering Inn (highly reccomend) has a character that fits into this archetype. Saliss. I'm kinda bad at explaining things, so bear within me. The setting is a high fantasy story with gnoll (wolf-dudes) and drakes (dragon's cousin, lizard dudes), obviously humans too, and on one side of this central conflict is a city and within one of the cities, is a complete goofball, named Saliss. In fact, this character is so off the wall, that the first time we see him in-story, he out-weirds the from-earth human protagonist where one of her biggest character trait is being odd. He's a nudist which is why he got arrested, and adventurer/alchemist so powerful, that he's named throughout the world (named adventurers being the highest class of adventurers), which is seemingly the reason he gets passes for his behavior. Throughout the entire story, you get the feeling that he's got his own shit going on, and he absolutely does, and not just being a pawn for his side of all of these conflicts. One great thing about the wandering inn is how it peels different characters apart layer by layer, and here that process is beautifully done. It's not so subtlely revealed that he can use his potions to turn into different forms. He has relations to lighter aspects of the criminal underbelly through speakeasies, or atleast, his "cousin does". He has relations to the highest authority in Pallass (the city this is all taking place in), and even though he gets bailed out and bails out the general, they always speak to eachother in sorrowful, regretful, and sometimes vile words, tons of context and history unknown to us. As it turns out, the guy who litterally wore nothing, with seemingly nothing to hide, nothing up his non-existent sleeves, was really a sleeve onto his own. He was a hero, but before he was a hero, he was daughter to the Manus's genius grand-stategist, the cyclops. Obviously looking through hindsight, that clearly didn't sit will with, soon-to-be, him. You see, there's word for what she is, she who loves other women while being such, a slur onto them, made specifically for this world, a turnscale. They, Onieva, used alchemy to turn themselves into a man. They turn back sometimes but at some point, they're both "them", and they both want to be expressed even if Saliss wants Onieva gone, the braggadocious "real him" she's always wanted to be, and the more strictly extroverted but less toxic "real her" he is underneath. If there's one thing that works with a funny character, depending on how you write and your work's length, giving them some of the most depth, can give them a role just as valuable as their comedy to hold on to, so that they can be more and function in the story more than that humble mask, making readers appreciate both sides more. I hope this helps.
9:31 Asgore also has some understanding of saving and reloading as when you act and tell him that he has already killed you before he sadly nods his head
I honestly agree with both you and the internets idea of sans. He knows all how saving reloading and resetting works, and that's why he tries all he can do to manipulate you, judge you, and give you the chance to go back and change. However, I do believe he is depressed simply because he's not like flowey. He cares about the underground, and therefore wants to protect it. But he realizes that the player actually can't be stopped, and a lot of gamers are 100%ers, or at the very least they wanna try everything. So even after they do the pacifist route, it's likely that they'll do the genocide route after. So he kinda has to mentally deal with the fact that even on a good ending, it may not be permanent.
Some potential lore bits: Theres hints in hidden rooms in the game that Sans actually used to work as a scientist for the king with his father who many believe to be Gaster. This would explain his knowledge of the fourth wall, essentially acting like the judge, jury, and executioner of the player.
@@tadeolaguarda6965 i thought the amalgams came AFTER Sans? Like didn’t she start the determination project after the core meltdown killed gaster and she became head scientist?
@@No.1RatedSalesman She does claim to have hid it from everyone, however in the game there are a few hints that Sans knew.(even though there are only 3, i think they are very solid) First, if you call Papyrus before entering Alphys lab from the first time, the conversation he has whit frisk somehow(i don´t remember the details) ends whit Papyrus aking if it means that there are dogs inside of the lab to wich Sans says: "I mean, i wouldn´t rule it out"(i want to say he said that while whinking, but that may just be my memory lying to me). Second, while on alphys lab if you call papyrus in front of the bag of dog food alphys has to feed the amalgamates(or at least the dog amagamate) Papyrus coments that he is sure he had seen that same bag on Sans room a few days ago. Finally, in Sans and Papyrus kitchen, on Sans side of their fridge, there is a singular half eaten bag of potato chips, there is only one place on the entire game were it is posible to get a bag of potato chips and that is the vending machine located inside the true lab.
Personal favourite of mine who i believe falls into this category, Sokka from ATLA. He's often used as the go to comedic relief character but he is arguably the character who grows the most as a person among the main cast, ontop of being an amazing leader and strategist.
I would say “comic relief who has the best character growth” is its own, arguably even cooler, trope. Inosuke from Demon Slayer is another good example of it I think. When you look past the constant “haha funny boar man” part of his character, he goes from a careless egotistical jerk to a good friend and leader.
He's one character thats a part of my favorite character trope, "guy that feels inferior to his super powered friends but overcomes it by working hard and being brave" along with characters like usopp from one piece
@@Devorador_de_sonhos he’s not quite there yet, but I think as he keeps learning empathy and humility, his desire to be the absolute best and boss everyone else around is starting to become solid leadership traits.
I mean, it's not like Chara is innocent. Asriel straight up days they weren't a good person and practically created the Kill or Be Killed motto that Flowey uses.
@killminewin4733 never said they were innocent. I just said they are not a heartless murderer. After all, without Chara, the pacifist ending would be impossible (where do you think those memories from Asriel's and Chara's come from? Frisk wasn't there). There is also the fact that they wouldn't have killed them selfs with the flowers if they didn't care about their family (instead of killing them), but I don't want to go on a long monologue with more.
@@matyas009also, if you do genocide more than once they straight up tell you to stop, because youre going against what they thought you were doing genocide for in the first place. power. they were never a heartless demon that starts and restarts genocide over and over like the fandom has always portrayed them to be. they do what they do for a reason. they follow the players lead and thats it.
Not many people know about Mirage background history and this video tackles it at a perfect point, even when you are playing Mirage you can see the crack of the caracther, when all your teammates have died and you are all alone, he often says a line of dialogue between "Haha i gues im all alone ¬again¬" and "Ok dont panic everything is going to be fine" MAN I LOVE THIS GUY HE IS SO HUMANNNN DAMNIT
Id like to bring up another comic relief that may fit this. Jean Pierre polnareff, he's a guy who Acts all aloof but his reason for fighting is pretty serious. He also goes from happy looking to serious in the blink of an eye. He even ends up with one of the higher good guy kill counts in jojo killing almost all his opponents.
The whole Vailla Ace thing too. I alwo want to bring that it will later be discovered that he played a big role in stopping the on-going Dio plan after his death and found one of the locations in which some big activities were happening and basically had his own journey in there in which he discovered some big stuff. Turns out he was the most dedicated fighter next to Jotaro
Sana doesn't really have any pain to cover I will say the analysis in this video is mostly right, but sans does admit that he only suspected that you're the anomaly in his reports, he doesn't 100% know unless you play the genocide route, hence why he says "timekines jumping left and right, stopping and starting" "that's your fault, isn't it?" He phrases it as a question because until now he just didn't really know for sure
@@No.1RatedSalesmanI think the pain for him is simply knowing the fact that something that rewinds time exists in this world and that at any moment it can erase memories of everyone else. It's more of a futility thing, I believe.

Your descriptions of sans and mirage we're amazingly accurate (I skipped the spot segment as I haven't watched across the spiderverse yet but I'm sure it was just as good) It's so refreshing to see with all the inaccurate portrayals of sans (Also fellow mirage main cause he's a funny silly guy)
In the comics, Spot beat Miles harder than his father ever could, does it again, then just dips out on his own. I guess the writers just couldnt possibly think of a way for him to get beat by miles or smthn, cause he just kicks the ever living apple sauce out of him, then just *leaves.*
Now that's how you make yourself remembered. Show that you are a threat... But don't do anything, so they always know you're still out there, ready to strike at any time.
As a huge Undertale fan, I really love your take on sans. It feels like it should be obvious to his character, yet it feels like it was never said. Really good video! This is one of my favorite character tropes and you covered it in a really well, and funny way.
He is like only a fourth right. Sans is manpualtive. but the general comprehension of sans being depressed and stuff is legitimate, like, period. it stems from him comprehending how vulnerable his world is to resets and all the progress everyone makes on the day to day just being reversed. He's forgetting that Flowey exists. He forgets one particular line about flowey being terrified of sans.
@@taddad2641you probably believe that the Fandom's characterization of Sans is correct. You should know that the fandom stole 90% of Alphys' character an gave it to Sans for some reason. This video is the closest to getting sans' character right lmao
Another thing about Sans. I think any correct portrayal of him is one that is straight-up depressed and nihilistic. I don’t know the extent of Sans’ understanding of his place in the universe, but if he understands that he’s a character in a video game, he probably understands, for example, that talk of emotional heartache and challenge would only get more people interested in doing a genocide run. And so, though he tries as hard as he can for the little glimmer of hope things will turn out ok, he knows the odds of the worse case scenario happening EVENTUALLY are massive.
this is such a unique and cool take on sans because i feel like everyone else seems him completely different from this video and has been using confirmation bias to keep enforcing how he is for years
Thank you for representing sans accurately. It hurts me knowing that so many people just see him as a big fuzzy comic relief character. Although I know he's a much darker character than he shows sometimes, I didn't realize how much manipulating he does so thank you for enlightening me :)
Tricky (From Madness Combat) is also a good example, he started off as a joke character, but became the one of, if not the most, powerful character of the series
I think a lot of people forget that sans doesn’t REMEMBER when resets and saves happen. He just KNOWS they exist, and he’s also VERY good at reading facial expressions. This is how he can tell when you’ve died, if he’s fooled you, etc. sans doesn’t remember when resets happen, he just knows they exist.
I actually felt fear whenever Sans started talking about a “Tiny Flower”. I feel like Sans isn’t “depressed” or whatever garbage the fandom makes up. He is a character that feels some sort of pain, (in the genocide route) but conceals it with his puns and funny manner. He DOES care about everybody, but as he says, “Some day, you gotta learn when to QUIT.” Edit: *why did this get so popular..?*
You can still care while being depressed. Take it from someone whose been for a while now. You don't suddenly become devoid of emotions, nor is it impossible to feel happy. Well, in most cases, at least. It just completely saps your motivations for... Anything. You don't wanna get out of bed in the morning. You don't wanna go to work. You don't wanna clean, or do the dishes, or... Well, anything, really. Even hobbies and activities you used to love just... Lose their appeal. Of course, you can't go telling everyone else you're depressed, and give them that burden. So you put on a smile that isn't always fake, you don't tell them how you feel, you just push forward. I'd certainly say Sans is depressed. He more or less spells it out in the final battle. Nothing really matters to him anymore, and this final battle is less a heroic last stand to save the world, and more a desperate last attempt at making you give up, reset, and leave the world in peace. One of his lines, "I can't afford not to care anymore", is more or less him pushing through that haze of demotivation to admit this isn't something he can ignore anymore. It's not a morning alarm that you shut off and go back to sleep. It's not a day of work you skipped. It's not a desk full of dishes that you can't bother to take to your kitchen. He HAS to deal with this. So yeah, I think he's QUITE depressed, if his mannerisms are anything to go by. Not the chronically depressed emo edgy boy that a lot of the Undertale fandom ends up portraying him as whenever they try to depict "Sans when he's not on screen", but depression comes in many shades, and I can certainly relate to the sentiment of "not wanting to do anything outside of my own interests."
@@kamaniraYES! THANK YOU! Sans fights you because you are MOMENTS away from doing irreparable damage to the timeline. If you spare one monster, the timeline isn’t in danger anymore- so he just won’t fight you! He and Chara want to really hammer it into your head that your actions have consequences, and reaching the Absolute is THE action with THE consequence.
@@kamaniraalso it's important to note that even though he can't afford not to care anymore he doesn't do everything he could. He tries but ultimately he knows that you could just reset after he dies so he's more about "if you do this pls change your mind before it's too late, i know you'll beat me eventually". There's no point in fully snapping out of his non-caringness as you'll try again and again and again. Sure he'll make it hard he'll make it annoying but if you come back after 20 tries it doesn't really matter how hard he tries.
Sans is depressed, its in the game, you can also VERY CLEARLY notice it, he makes puns to make others happy to make up for his own lack of happiness, his character is chosen as a skeleton with this certain facial structure because the reason he smiles all the time resembles as a mask, he looks happy all the time, but deep deep inside, he's really not, and sense he can remember timelines, he knows you as the player, kill everyone, over and over, without remorse or regret, him, his brother, and all his friends, and then, you might make a pacifist route, and act like your saving everyone and everyone's free, but, Sans knows that their just gonna end back down there getting slaughtered continuously, agian, and agian, and he knows, no matter how much he tries, he can't do anything, but he still tries, kinda, even Toby Fox has said stuff that confirms this from what I know, someone I watched did a very full and perfect explanation on Sans's whole character, and even stuff around him like characters and feelings he or they have impacted him or he has impacted them, Sans is just way to cool of a character, is very, and I mean very, well made, I will also say, some of this stuff in this video are right about Sans, but some of it is wrong, but hey, who am I to Judge.
One of my favorites of these sorts of characters is Zeke, from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He comes across as incompetent and a goofball when you first encounter him, but as you go on, it becomes more and more clear that Zeke understands the events of the game more than anyone else, except Rex. He also subverts common tropes like "oh I'll wait for the villain to charge up or run away!" by attacking instantly and without mercy. Zeke slowly changes your view of him from a hopeless, unlucky loser, to an adult trying to fight against the darkness of the world by infusing it with his own ridiculousness and power.
Cayde-6. I remember starting D1 back in beta and pickin hunter. As a kid a I met Cayde and thought "look at this goofy cowboy robot". Then you understand why his name is Cayde-6, why he named his pistol ace, and why he wears such a carefree heroic attitude around the guardians. He's not a tragic character, because he refuses to see life as tragedy, but because most of his tragedy he knows to confront even the most dire situations with an air of humor and fun. Sure, he's a goofy cowboy robot, but he's also the only vanguard who leads with their heart before their mind or power. It's why Zavala and Ikora have always respected him so much. He does what they do without ever even for a moment giving in or giving up. He is the quintessential example of what it means to be a guardian in destiny and I think without his example the game doesn't hold up even close to as well. Truly my favorite of the subverted comedic relief. Can't wait to see my boy again
Real talk, dope ass video. Comedians being seen as happy go lucky people who are just somehow "in tune with how to make people laugh" is a story so far removed from comedy. I personally even go as far as to say comedy in itself is manipulation. I often find myself being the "funny man" in the group, and personally think its due to a traumatic adolescents (not intentional trauma dump, just context) and how I like making people laugh so they won't suffer like I did. I bring this up because I think it relates to the main theme of this video that good comedy characters need to have a ulterior motive to be believable and truly dynamic in the telling. Most comedy is derived from some form of trauma and I always find myself relating the the goofy side characters Side note, is the piece on Sans canon by Toby Fox? I think that this story definitely makes sense and I haven't played all endings to confirm his true nature. I'm just curious if he has confirmed this on twitter or something along those lines. I hate being the "source please" guy, but I'm genuinely curious to read what Foxman has said about him.
I have not read every single post Toby Fox has ever made but I'm sure that it is not confirmed and is just a good theory. Everything Sans does lines up with the theory so even if Toby did not intend it (which I think he did), it is still a valid view on Sans' character.
@@svgaming263 100%. Even if it isn’t confirmed I still think there’s truth to it. It lines up perfectly. I tried not to ask that making it sound like I think it’s made up. Because I don’t and thought this was true before I even saw this video.
That's why this kind of archetype is probably my favorite in any media (if done right) The contrast of these two opposite attributes elevates the impact of the depth of the character to such a big extent making them easily the ones to get highly invested into
Wow, when I clicked on this video randomly, I did not expect an extremely profound thought provoking video essay on some of my most favourite silly guys
Alright due to me being an absolute Undertale nerd I am inclined to say that the soulless pacifist route (that one image of Chara with the other monsters faces with x's over them) isn't Chara killing anyone. It's them not giving you a good ending after the atrocities you committed in another timeline (or timelines for you insane people that do the genocide route multiple times). They don't kill anyone, they just don't let your actions go unnoticed and unpunished.
Honorable mention: Plastic Man (DC). He might joke around, but his powers is something else. His elasticity is so broken that Batman has no contingency plans for him when he turns evil. You can freeze him or chop him up, but he will go back to normal in no time.

Damn this give me a whole new perspective on Sans. I also saw him as a depressed guy who hides it with jokes but now, I see him as even more of a badass than he already was
Finally someone who understood the character May i add he knows that he only does 1 damage, so to fix this he made his attacks do one damage constantly so your soul couldn't have s after taking damage instead, it gives you karma. He knows about saves, so he knows when its his turn, he knows that he can make it be his turn forever, he knows when he can just dodge attacks, he knows that you can literally just use your strongest attack first, his fight was a very very very struggling attempt to make you give up. It was his words even, "The most determined thing you can do right now is give up." He's manipulating you to give up. He tried every option to make you give up. He's not "OP" he's not powerful, he's actually really weak, but hes a one trick pony, he may be weak to every other monster out there but to you who's in control, he's your worst nightmare. He knows about everything and he will keep up with your determination until his own body gives up on its own.
One thing about sans that is really cool is that he uses his knowledge of his world against you. Dodging attacks, not giving immunity frames, and attacking out of the bullet box all while crap talking you are some examples that shows that while not overwhelmingly powerful due to his low stats he can still be a threat.
I feel like that does make him strong
His boss fight i think was pretty underwhelming, i don't know if it's because i played alot of top down 2d games with a keyboard that i'm good with undertale's control but yeah, sans has no place on every "top 20 hardest bosses" like you never see abs rad on there or like the scav king from rain world

Yep.
Maybe if sans didn’t want us to kill everybody he shouldn’t have had a dope ass boss fight

Because it is so incredibly well-known, mostly cuz of sans. But it's also not used as much as other tropes in media. Underrated? Overrated? Or something else?

10:16 you know the extent of the genius of undertale cannot be understated. his very power is that he's judge, jury, & executioner and is terrifyingly good at fulfilling that role.
he isn't strong but if he's punishing someone he is great at pissing them of & frustrating them till they give up or beat him after hour's of time wasted to practicing his fight.
now that i think about it he isn't punishing frisk he's punishing the player and stopping them from getting the ending and getting rewarded for there curiosity for choosing to go out of there way to kill all character's for no reason except why not or to see what would happen, it can't be for just exp as once at a good level the player just could stop and you're actively going out of you're way to kill them all so the player is actively choosing the bad route.
killing sans is the only satisfaction for going down the bad route (and it isn't much of a satisfactory death anyway's as he just disappears after moving of screen) as the ending doesn't seem to me (a person who has never played undertale) to be a satisfying end to the game, you just ether die and the world end's or the world just end's with you're involvement.

Sans is depressed, but still manages to care about others, and Papyrus is just a cheerful fellow that people think is dumb.

I honestly have no idea where the edgy part came from, his character is already badass enough as it is but ok.
However, it also seems like he's known about the resets for a looong time (maybe Flowey?) so he just kinda... Doesn't care anymore? Like, he said it himself after all "Honestly, it makes it kinda hard to give it my all"

One thing that never gets old about this play on the trope is that there's some level of misdirection. I prefer the theory that Frisk is the narrator and that is why they try to guilt you into being better person so they get the ending they want.
Especially since Frisk is never Frisk, they never have a name, UNTIL you do a True Pacifist run.
@@angelicambyence Well heres some pointers
BASICALLY i think Chara is the narrator.
So if we deny her offer at the end then she takes control cause thats what she was CONDITIONED to do
About frisk: I dont think Frisk is really Frisk. They are simply a blank slate for us. We CHOOSE their own actions. Frisk isn’t responsible for anything we do. Thats why Flowey tells us to let them be happy cause after the pacifist route they are somewhat free from our control.
Again this is all MY personal opinion so your own ideas may actually be canon but this is just what I think.

i personally feel like even if your impression of sans is tainted by how the fandom portrays him, playing the game for the first time will even still perfectly set him up as a character, as even in his very first scene he's subverting the sort of expectation the fandom may have given you. starting out as serious, even a bit menacing, building up to the tension of him approaching you, until he reveals himself from the darkness with a whoopee cushion. it feels almost intended to subvert the expectation you may have gotten from all the fanart of him as this powerful, tragic character.
the whoopee cushion scene is so good because it kinda feels like toby planned that u as the player would eventually try the genocide route, regret it, reset, and come right back to this moment with newfound genuine fear of him now that you’ve seen the extent of his hidden strength. absolutely brilliant

He sure is... a guy"

Another good example similarly to Spot is Wheatley from Portal 2. You spend the first half of the game with him following as a somewhat useless comic relief, then stabs you in the back as soon as he achieves power
And he hates being called a moron like how spot hates being called a villain of the week they resent how others see them
This is even deeper than that when you realize that Wheatley’s betrayal is a direct result of him being designed to make terrible decisions.

Sans, the Manipulator who’s Actually Justified
Some potential lore bits: Theres hints in hidden rooms in the game that Sans actually used to work as a scientist for the king with his father who many believe to be Gaster.
This would explain his knowledge of the fourth wall, essentially acting like the judge, jury, and executioner of the player.
there are also a few hints to the fact that he helps Aplhys to deal whit the amalgamates
@@tadeolaguarda6965...no
Nothing says about the amalgamates, alphys herself says she hid it from *everyone*
@@tadeolaguarda6965 eh, I wouldn't says sans saying that dogs being in there is possible means he knows but the other two things are pretty solid
Bro went from sexist to rizzler. Ultimate character growth
@@longbeinginosuke being a good friend ok, but Leader?
@@Devorador_de_sonhos he’s not quite there yet, but I think as he keeps learning empathy and humility, his desire to be the absolute best and boss everyone else around is starting to become solid leadership traits.

Doomed to scapegoat status
lmaoo right! like it's not chara who's causing pain it's you
I mean, it's not like Chara is innocent.
Sans isn’t a villain, he’s just trying to avenge his brother
Polnareff is so fucking underrated. He has one of the top 3 best fights in the whole series
The thing about comic relief characters mainly sans is how they just joke so much to avoid the pain or just to ignore any real responsibility.

I will say the analysis in this video is mostly right, but sans does admit that he only suspected that you're the anomaly in his reports, he doesn't 100% know unless you play the genocide route, hence why he says "timekines jumping left and right, stopping and starting" "that's your fault, isn't it?" He phrases it as a question because until now he just didn't really know for sure
@@No.1RatedSalesmanI think the pain for him is simply knowing the fact that something that rewinds time exists in this world and that at any moment it can erase memories of everyone else. It's more of a futility thing, I believe.

@@taddad2641
Depressed maybe, but he's not some edgy mf that the fandom portrayed him to be.

He understands sans but not chara…
Tricky (From Madness Combat) is also a good example, he started off as a joke character, but became the one of, if not the most, powerful character of the series
Damn, I haven’t heard that name in years!
Tricky was a comic relief at first, but he hasn't been one in a while. He's a legit threat lmao

He DOES care about everybody, but as he says, “Some day, you gotta learn when to QUIT.”
Edit: *why did this get so popular..?*

Yuhhh fellow destiny player, yeah caydes my favorite character can’t wait to see him in the final shape
Most comedy is derived from some form of trauma and I always find myself relating the the goofy side characters
Side note, is the piece on Sans canon by Toby Fox?
Toby doesn't confirm stuff about his franchise that much, or at all for that matter. But sans being like what the video said is pretty correct.
That's why this kind of archetype is probably my favorite in any media (if done right)
The contrast of these two opposite attributes elevates the impact of the depth of the character to such a big extent making them easily the ones to get highly invested into

He knows about saves, so he knows when its his turn, he knows that he can make it be his turn forever, he knows when he can just dodge attacks, he knows that you can literally just use your strongest attack first, his fight was a very very very struggling attempt to make you give up.
