Affordable Fishing Rod Refinishing at Home, Budget Remodeling (DIY)

- I decided to refinish a fishing rod that is close to fifty years old. The idea was to not spend a lot of money in the remodeling process. The methods I used are inexpensive and the materials are readily available from local stores.
This video includes:
1. Redoing the fishing rod handle
2. Stripping off the eyes and cleaning them
3. Sanding down the old paint on the rod
4. Repainting blank
5. Wrapping the fishing eyes
6. Sealing the fishing eye wraps
All of the things listed above cost less than forty dollars to do. This is an amateur approach to refinishing a fishing rod in a homemade fashion. All of the work done in this video was performed by hand and completed using many items and tools I already had at home. There were no special tools or equipment purchased for refinishing fishing rods.
I've been building rods for over 50 years and yours turned out very nice.
The MOJO that you have on that stick is unparalleled. Thanks for your intel on how to fix up an old rod.
I found your channel cause I'm getting into fishing. I've made props and costumes for 20yrs and this is the first video of yours that I've thought 'I CAN ALREADY DO THAT!'.
In my opinion, the rod that you build yourself is WAY cooler than any rod someone could buy. Very cool old rod you have there!!!
Gorilla Glue Clear worked for me on three old rods. Dries fast and ultra
shiny. UV resistant, cheap in price and can be found at any hardware
store.
Nice to see refurbishing over 'throw away and buy a new one'. That rod turned out great and now its totally unique to you.
Thanks for the comment. I gave it to my son few months ago. It's been a special fishing rod for many years.
You motivated me to redo one of my surf rods ... Great video as always...Sy
It was a fun project, actually turned out pretty good. thanks for watching.
well done. i have a couple i've been putting off now i can use your ideas to fix mine.
Excellent ingenuity 👍
Tons of respect for doing it low budget like this! 😎
Yeah, it's far from being professional, but here's the first fish I caught on the remodeled rod: ua-cam.com/video/QUr5lMBtD3E/v-deo.html Don't use Rustoleum paint.
Man that turned out awesome...you might of just found a side gig..lol.great video brother
It was a fun project. I'm glad it's over though.
Excellent job for doing this on a budget!! Your resourcefulness is amazing. Now put that baby to work, no better feeling than using something you built with your own two hands and watching it perform just as well as a store bought item.
thanks for watching and the encouragement. It's been about ten days now since I finished the rod, still haven't used it. That Rustoleum paint still has a very mild tackiness, very frustrating. I looked at the label again. It said five to seven days to fully dry on plastics. Would fiberglass be considered a plastic?
Rad Reeling Fishing it’s a sort of reinforced plastic so it may take the time written in the instructions to dry. That tackiness usually occurs when there is too much humidity or maybe it was the lighter fluid. I’m not quite sure if lighter fluid is oil based but if it is then that’s the culprit. I did some research, take a small amount of talcum powered and put it on a small area of that tacky paint. It should help it dry. I say a small area just to give it a try, don’t want your entire rod covered in tacky powder.
Either way I’m sure it will dry soon, just needs some time.
@@ProjectReel Thanks for taking time to share. I'm starting to wonder if there was a reason that particular paint was on sale, ha ha...I think for now I'll let it sit for a while longer, no need to force anything. It could be all the things you've listed for sure. I think that particular paint is oil based. We will see, thanks again, greatly appreciated.
Rad you give me hope man good info good knowledge great content and narrative on the snook rod
Wow such a great video. Thank you
Kind of like the rat rod of rods, loving it.
Good job JC, it'll be interesting to see how it holds up when you hook a monster. I think it'll be fine.
I like that "when I hook up". Thanks for watching.
That video went well with my fresh made beef jerky using Moores Marinade!!!
Nice work on the Snook Master!!
Thanks for watching, ha ha...Every one who has tried the jerky I made with Moores the other day has raved about how good it tastes.
Hi JC, Your rebuild really looks good. Now it's time to catch a Snook. Good luck, Mickey
Thanks for watching. That sounds like a great idea Mickey.
Thanks JC, nice job 👍
Thanks for watching Mark. It was a fun project thanks to the UA-cam instructional videos.
He shook master I redid a very old fishing pole for a family member of mine & she told me she loves yellow yo what i did i through away the old reel & got a new one. Then i didn't like the neon green of the rod so i cleaned it up & put a layer of white spray paint but i did mask off the guides then i took some yellow spray paint & did two coats of yellow. Its already for now & it came out great & I did take an auto body class in highschool so I know how to paint by can. 😎
What paint did you use?
Great job
every rod watching this right now lol
Great job! Impressive!
Thanks for watching. It was a fun task to take on. I'm please with the results.
Top stuff we'll done
Thanks for watching. It turned out great except for the choice of paint. This was a fun project. I have since given the rod to my son.
Best remodeling ever
Thanks, it's a little different for sure.
It literally look brand new
This video was cool!🤙
Thanks for commenting. It was fun to remodel the fishing rod.
Very cool!
Thanks for the encouraging words!
Silly question probably a stupid question.
Is it possible to change a salt water rod from a fixed spool to a sliding reel seat so I can use a mutiplier as well
Cheers great video
I don't understand. Maybe find a rod building channel here on UA-cam.
Nice creative video to redo a rod on a budget! I'm wondering how it holds up after using it for about a year.
Thanks for watching. I gave it to my son, but I'm sure it's holding up great.
@@RadReelingFishing Nice that he likes fishing too! Thanks for the tips, you inspired me to change out corroded guides on my travel rod for titanium ones!
Very nice and very little cost! How is the paint holding up has it cracked or peeled?
The paint is fine.
NICE BUDDY!!!...That was quite the project man, well done!!!...Just hope that black handle doesnt start to bleed threw on your hands. That was pretty cool though man!!!
thanks for watching. yeah, me too!
Nice..
3 yrs later how did it work out
Would I be able to use spray can clear coat on top my new paint?
Or would it not work 🤔
I know I should use epoxy but I'm trying to take it easy
Do not use epoxy to finish your rod, it's too thick and will add a lot of weight to the blank. I would use an automotive-grade clear coat. Any clear coat meant for plastic should do because it's meant to flex.
I just bought 800 sand paper. Is that to light to take off finish?
I think maybe 220 or 400 might be good to start. Thanks.
Nice 👌
Now we just wait for the day time video
Thanks for commenting. What do you mean, so you can see the rod in the sunlight or see me catching fish during the day?
It would be cooler if you put k guides on it
Ha ha, thanks for letting me know!
try using a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
why u put rope again you have put the black foam handle be much better
❌Or do I even need to clear coat the paint?❌
I had problems with the brand paint not drying properly so I didn't clear coat.
Wtf .lol
I have some Tequila
For what bro?
Rad Reeling Fishing UA-cam for an alcohol you looking for lol great video tho.
@@bobbymonroy5054 Ha ha...I get it now. FUNNY!
Rad Reeling Fishing UA-cam no hard feelings man
Man throw that piece of junk in the trash and get a real rod!
No way, not the Snook Master rod. I caught a 25 lb Snook on it the first time out after I did this remodel. It's still a Snook catching machine.
Should have used polyurethane.
For what, the paint?
@@RadReelingFishing yeah, my buddy used it on his rod and it looks nice. I thought it wouldn’t work but it did.
