to be clear Turner did not interfere with the throw because he clearly beat the throw that the ball and the glove hit him in the back so by common sense he should be safe but "its a judgement call" as the MLB will call it so by rule they cannot review it just like balls and strikes..
@ big fundamental Completely agree!! Runner can’t control the length of time the play itself takes to develop, nor can he govern the timing of the play! It was also agreed that the runner ran the base according to rules. And, more importantly, as you point out, the runner clearly beat throw! Why should he be charged with interference when the very nature of the timing of the play, and the time it took for the play to begin and end made it possible for the runner to beat the ball to the bag. And that in such a way that the first baseman could only catch it after the runner was clearly on and then beginng to come off the bag after beating the throw to first when the first baseman’s glove hit the runner’s butt in attempting to catch the ball! Lousy rule indeed if the video is not allowed to over rule judgement calls of this nature. Nats looking pretty good in the top of the eight, right now. Go, Nationals!
@@nlrmoldw1712 i am not a fan to either of this teams but that was just a horrible rule, at least they could have check the video and judge weather the runner interfere with the play or not but i guess they have to protect the officials and protect MLB's image..
@ big fundamental I’m forced to agree again. We tend to enthrone human judgement king and God over a respect for human frailty and it's dependence and need for assistance.
@ Michael Heathman Well... I was not listening to Rome; I was listening to my eyes! My first reaction to your reply was total disagreement and unbelief. But you’re right, ignorance of the rule on my part and the runner beating the throw to the bag influenced my initial call of safe. Yeap! I still maintain that the runner clearly beat the throw and the attempted catch. Nonetheless, your reply prompted me to review the play. In the process, I found a video on You Tube of a young man who gives a thorough and in depth analysis of the rule that you present as evidence as he reviews the play and I was lead to agree with both you and him. According to his highly detailed analysis and explanation, the runner was clearly out, according to the rule! As the young man points out, it makes no difference that the runner beat the throw, what matters is that he violated the runner’s lane rule. So, again, after reviewing the play as critiqued by this young man I agree with both you and him. The runner was out by law! Although it's neither here nor there, the runner did beat the throw! He was just about to come ’off’ the bag when the first baseman’s glove hit his ’butt.’ There was no physical interference on his part. If the glove had hit him in the crotch then that would’ve been another thing, irrespective of the rule, that is. Look at the video again! The runner beat the throw, clearly. And what you say about a .150 hitter hitting a weak grounder to the pitcher and deserving to be out because he or she is a .150 hitter is, to be quite honest, unfair and pointless because those can be tough plays for a pitcher and his first baseman, as in this case. Unless I misinterpret your meaning. Neither did the play go down as you described it, that the pither’s throw beat the runner to the base and that the first baseman’s glove was near the ground for the catch, and all. The runner was almost at the bag before the throw was near the glove, and the first baseman’s glove wasn’t near the ground, it was a little above knee height. But, again, beating the throw doesn't trump violating the rule, so he’s out at first by lane violation. You’re correct. But he beat the throw. And that without physical interference. That’s why the first baseman’s glove hit the runner’s butt. He had got past the attempted catch. He had beat the throw! Gotta have the last word! Nevertheless, you may enjoy viewing that video analysis. The video was produced by ’CloseCallSports’ and first aired 3 weeks ago. The title is: Analysis of Umpire Sam Holbrook’s Runner’s Lane Interference Call in 2019 World Series. No disrespect intended!
The part I will never understand even if Turner is out at First why does Gomes have to come back to first. It's not like the play didn't happen and if you want to check the replay you can clearly see he is a second when the "interference" occurs.
I don't think the rule even applies on this play. The rule is so the catcher or pitcher has a lane to throw from a position in front of the plate or along the first base line (bunt or swinging bunt), since the runner is between the fielder and first baseman. Here, the ball is a third of the way down the third base line and the pitcher had a clear lane to throw, his throw just tailed and hit the runner. The runner was not between the fielder and first baseman. I've never seen this call made when the fielded ball and throw were that far from the plate and first base line...
Everyone's like "Where was he supposed to go? What did he do wrong?" He was supposed to run on the other side of the foul line. What he did wrong was not running on the other side of the foul line. And it seems like the players and managers don't know that. They think the white line three feet to the right of the foul line is just there for aesthetics. I feel bad for Holbrook cuz he's taking the blame for an archaic bizarre rule. ua-cam.com/video/zI82sPn1Uj0/v-deo.html
The dumbest is the catcher blocking rule the interference rule makes sense it’s not fair to the defense if he’s allowed to do anything to prevent them from getting him out
Actually the rule for a runner going from third to home and there is a play at the plate is by far the worst rule in the MLB because it can get players hurt and it makes no sense but keep trying to get those views. People will do anything for stardom in today’s world
Phillip Probst doesn’t he have to stay on the line🤔 if he moved outside the lines while running wouldn’t that be against the rules?... so why was his glove in the way of the runner?
Phillip Probst So for now on all first baseman should have their mit in front of the runners so they can get an easy out for interference? Sounds about as dumb to me
From MLB TO MMA (ufç,bellator, oneFC etc ) referees need to be held accountable for some of their out-of-this-world officiating. Especially ones that are game or fight altering.
The rule calls for any play down the 1st base line requires the runner(batter) to run outside the foul line. There is another white line to the right of the foul line, runner must run within these 2 lines. That's the rule, you don't have to like it, but it's the rule and has been for years. Read the rule book.
@@johnsmith-yi5zi You tag the base with your left foot as you run by. There a lot of plays that the catcher has to make a throw and if the batter runs to the inside of the line, he can blocks out the1st baseman. It's a good rule, but most people don't know it. Thanks for your question.

Looks to me like the runner was in the Baseline, didn't purposely knock the ball out of the first baseman's hand so he should have been safe
dennis shady didn’t purposely knock it out, but he was obviously out of he zone and almost on the grass.

Interference, ball is dead, and all runners cannot advance.
How about an extra base for making such a lousy throw.

Bob Carp the rules says he has to run in the lane that’s given the whole way he never had a single foot in that lane
it applies. hence the call. read the rule

But the first base is in fair territory, if he remains on the foul line how is he supposed to hit the first base bag.
@@brentmiller6414 by coming back into fair territory right before he reaches the base. which the rule specifically says is allowed.
