Yess!!!! Pharcyde!!! I had this back on cassette tape right after high school. One of the best albums of the early 90’s era. Grateful that your dad gets to hear this dope group
I remember hearing this all the time on the radio as a kid. I really miss the samples from the 90s and the carefree lyrics from that time. If you didn’t grow up during the 90s I feel sorry for you. It was a beautiful time for music.
No sympathy necessary. Those of us who grew up in the 70s and lived through the 90s remember the time quite well since we were old enough to drive, buy our own concert tickets and drink . 😁
The snap crackle pop is in the Quincy jones sample Summer in the city. It would simply be that way because the actual vinyl record J Swift owned was old, probably an original pressing from 1973. Notice fatlips verse, the sample is filtered (all the high pitch frequency is compressed into the low so you don't hear the crackling, then halfway through its unfiltered and you hear the organ and the crackling again. One of my favourite songs of any genre. Glad you enjoyed it.
Pharcyde said they formed after watching Freestyle Fellowship perform. They were like the Tribe Called Quest of LA. You should react to Inner City Boundaries, it's a must listen 🔥
The crackling wasn't left in or applied. In the beginnings of hip-hop, we worked with what we had and had absolutely no way to take it out. People that didn't have the equipment to make their own beats, used a lot of samples. The crackling is incidental and sounded good. It was just there. It's like watching a movie and seeing insects in the background. You don't add them in or take them out. They're just there and it works. It's part of nature. It was later that people started to choose to add it in or take it out, and this was only after equipment had the ability to do so and people either wanted a clean sound, or a nostalgic authentic old sound. In the beginning, it wasn't a choice. I know... I was there.
Maaannn, gangsta rap got all the press but the West coast quietly had something else bubbling up on the underground that was arguably even better from the likes of Pharcyde, Tha Alkaholiks, Souls of Mischief, Ras Kass, Freestyle Fellowship, Saafir, Del, Lootpack, Jurassic 5, and Blackalicious, just to name a FEW.....

Some vinyl was dirty due to wear and tear and age of the records. It became a part of the sound. Stack enough samples and the snap and crackling will get loud. It really comes to light during mastering when they add compression and other processes to bring up the levels to industry standard.

Yeah "Otha Fish" is incredible. I feel like no one can bounce like the South and the East has traditionally always had the purest lyricists but when it comes to flow, THAT crown goes to the west. Souls of Mischief is part of collective of Hieroglyphics. The static is something that you get from vinyl samples. I think they enhanced on the beat. Another grouo that applied that sound was The Roots in their song distortion of static. The irony was they were/are a hip hop band that makes it a point to use live instruments.

Everyone knows that 15:00 is the part you sing aloud in the car. 😂 Pharcyde are legends.
Souls of mischief later on became The Hieroglyphics coming from Oakland California. Del the funky Homosapien aka Deltron 3030 from the group does performances with a live orchesta and DJ Kid Koala that are nothing short of epic. Del was also in the song Feel good inc by The gorillaz.
Souls of Mischief is part of collective of Hieroglyphics. Del(cousin of Ice Cube) was the leader of sorts but it contained Souls of Mischief, Casual(who is a beast), Domino, Snupe, Pep Love, Mike G. & Mike P. That was the lineup back in the day anyway.
And Del was also on Gorillaz, Clint Eastwood & Rock the House.
It should be a crime how you still haven’t did what they do by the roots. Pops would fall in love with that one instantly.
I discovered you guys literally just yesterday. And you guys just reacted to one of my favorite songs ever! Lovvvve Passin’ me By..So I appreciate the great song choices and music taste.this a lot. I’ve been binging on the whole channel. I live s ask the appreciation for Erykah Badu and The Roots as well. Need more of them and Biggie too. Keep up the great work!
I definitely suggest done Lil Kim, Snoop and Missy Elliot for the future. …. 💙🖤🩶….Gucci Mane Yellow react would be fun too! lol 🤪 💛
The static is something that you get from vinyl samples. I think they enhanced on the beat. Another grouo that applied that sound was The Roots in their song distortion of static. The irony was they were/are a hip hop band that makes it a point to use live instruments.
The video is all that ... Ode to nineties!!! ... Love that Era ....
Pharcyde was ahead of their time
Love this song…
Another good one from the era is-Ahmad Lewis-Back in the day (remix)
Hip hop was WIDE open to try anything, and this was successful ..
Oh cool, I didn't know Bootie Brown was in Pharcyde, I wasn't familiar with them until now, I only knew him from his verse in Gorillaz - Dirty Harry. Loved this one, definitely playlist material, thank you guys for the introduction!
Ist time for " LETTER 2 MY UNBORN CHILD"!
Your dad knew that was Hendrix off the bat is crazy
Dad is right about the intentional fuzzy sound
I said it and I'll keep saying it....people loves old school west coast rap. That's why it sold so much more even though the media doesn't give us the credit. Keep doing the west coast
Pharcyde took inspiration from groups like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and the rest of the Native Tongues collective who were from the East Coast.
GUYS PLEEEEEEEASE REACT TO ATCQ! For some reason they get looked over by all the other reaction channels and they have debatably one of the best hip hop discographies of all time! 😭😭😭😭 (love this upload btw just had to voice that)
I’m liking the video before I even watch it. Love when you guys react to 90’s songs. These vibes are as much hip-hop as any ’hardcore’ songs. It’s just that this didn’t get the mainstream hype as the more hardcore music
