@genohall2235 Hence why I called it an anti-bullying song. What annoyed me about it was how "Runnin'" was used in the opening credits of the film "Tag" - which had NOTHING to do with being bullied.
The line “Back as kids, we used to kiss when we played truth or dare Now she's more sophisticated, highly edu-ma-cated” has always been one of my favourite lines in Hip Hop to this day.
Thanks for this one! I recorded a whole Pharcyde show here in LA for their 30 year anniversary album and 50 years of hip hop celebration, and the one and only Derrick Stewart aka Fatlip dropped a comment. Super down to earth group, they were hanging out with everyone after the show.
They weren’t underrated, in my opinion. The got lost in the culture shift to full on gangsterism. They were truly loved by those who knew. They weren’t celebrated like they should’ve been by the culture.
Thank you for this one! The Pharcyde don't get as much love as I think they deserve! Bizarre Ride 2 and LabCabinCalifornia are my favorite albums from them. True classics that ought to be on everyone's list.
My dude! I forgot all about the Hendrix sample in the opening 😮, over the years i always thought it must be, now confirmed by Digging The Greats ! Thanks man!
That song was big everywhere even in my city of NYC them the liks and souls of mischief were loved on the East Coast for they reminded us of east coast rap music more so than a west coast sound.
This is one of my fave songs of all time. So, getting to study and learn from Slim at music school was unexpected and a gift. He was putting out his solo stuff while I was studying and I remember hearing his stuff in the studio before he released it. Best part: he was doing a show during my school tenure and I was singing in the audience. I didn’t realize that Meshell Ndgeocello (pardon my spelling) was near me and my friends. Slim called her up to play /sing with him on stage but right before she went up, she said to me, “sounds like you want to be up there”. Then she said “c’mon “ and brought me up with her. If I recall , we sang and rocked out to Slim’s rendition of Family Affair bySly and the Family Stone. Just a random story. I will always remember Tre’s kindness, his teachings and him not kicking me off the stage when I was pulled up. 😅 this was about 20 years ago now. I’m 40 and live in Canada and going on 22nd year in my professional music career. 😊 Edit: I posted before watching and just finished th video. What a great treat this was. Thank you! And of course my fave song of all time is 93 till infinity… nice Segway. I already watched that video , but I just appreciate all that you do. Thanks!! ❤
Burger Records re-released the album on cassette about 13 years ago. Such a good album to just leave in your tape deck. I lived in Oakland at the time and, unfortunately, had all my tapes stolen one morning after my car was broken into.
One of my favorite tracks of all time, as well as one of the songs that helped get me _really_ into hip-hop. This channel btw is criminally underviewed, you got some of the best of this type of content out there.
It's one of my favorite tracks off all time , probably my favorite hip hop track. If someone asks me an example of a perfect song, I point them to this one
I used to travel to school on the train and I had this album on my cassette walkman. i played it over and over and over again. I even did an art project for my school, based on the album artwork.
Man, just love how deep you get into this art form. Can't begin to imagine the work it takes just to get up one of these episodes. There is so much I learn every time I tune in. it's a like music course packed into just a few minutes like those vitamins. Love your work. ❤ from Uganda(East Africa)
Overlooked in favour of Labcabincalifornia, this debut was great straight off the bat. Now, Mr DTG, how about those other Left Coast greats, the Freestyle Fellowship?
i believe you forgot the sample from the very beginning of the song. It sounds like guitar scratches...which comes from a Jimi Hendrix song....oh.....@5:23....you just stated it while I was typing! Genius.
I was playing this song for my nieces and nephew last week... Btw this Beat is definitely an example of how we did beats back in the day. It was crazy going through each song on a record to find the perfect bass line that fit the drums we sampled or even created... Miss them days.
i just got into that old hiphop and listened to this song maybe twice. didn’t think much of it(i guess because of how lonely i’ve gotten after all these years😅) but after this i’ll give it a deeper listen❤️✅
The samples and manipulation of the samples (pitching down, slowly down & reversing the order of the instruments, etc...) is almost genius imho. I am a hip hop fan, maybe not the biggest ever, but this song is a top 5 or 10 favorite hip hop song of all time, for me 😊 Nicely done ✅
I still can so well remember this as being one of the first songs with a totally different vibe on yo mtv, with an onslaught of naughty by nature and the like, and then this happened. Jazzy, funny, light.. it was awesome then and remains a favorite today.
The era, and area, of artists challenging themselves. The rappers inspire the beat makers, the beat makers inspire the rappers, and in turn inspire the album cover artist. And the live instruments, not just interpolations, that bring out the art of improv. The mighty Freestyle Fellowship, also carry that weight. And when they do a remix, it’s a different tune. They don’t just paste the vocals over another beat, they do it over so it fits the tone.
Love this track man....came out my Junior into Senior Year of Highschool....was part of the soundtrack to that summer, along with....Check Demus and Pliars murder she wrote. TRIBE midnight Marauders....and Cypris Hill Insane in the membrane❤
"My dear, my dear, my dear, you do not know me, but I know you very well, Now let me tell you 'bout the feelings I have for you When I try or make some sort of attempt, I simp Damn, I wish I wasn't such a wimp!”
The Pharcyde saved west coast Hip Hop. VOLUME 10, AHMAD, FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP, SAAFIR, THE BUMS, ANOTHA LEVEL, THE NONCE ETC... The west was never only Gangster rap.
I really appreciate you representing the West Coast especially LA and there other things you should go into like Good morning project blowed or hip-hop Café because so many artists came out of that like volume 10 and skew-lo
😂 that means you’re a real one 🔥 put those there for the new people - BUT I will say, a lot of good stuff coming the next couple of months, I can’t wait!
Great video as usual. You did fail to mention there are two versions of the song. I prefer the original version where SlimKidTrey doesnt omit the N word in his verse, and Imani's cadence is completely different and better in his verse as well.
I'll never forget listening to this song for the first time with my friend and tripping on Fatlips' verse. Amidst all the hard-core, macho, bitch this and ho that, gangsta shit that was going on at the time, here's some dude saying "damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp"
Personally, this is the first time I’ve heard the word “simp” but being as young as I was, didn’t know what it meant. But anyway, they came up with it & that’s what I’m going with
Love The Pharcyde. I played that tape to death. Definitely one of the most fun hip hop records ever. To me it's a tie between this and The B-Boys Paul's Boutique.

"Passin' Me By" is probably the best song about being rejected, LOL!
Followed by I wish, Skee-Lo
Add Running Away, basically wimping out: classic Hip Hop…
@@genohall2235 "Running Away" by The Pharcyde? That's an anti-bullying song.
@@pervertedalchemist9944
I took it more so as them not standing up to the bullying.

The Pharcyde was ahead of thier time.
This along with Runnin are certified classics
Can't forget "Drop" too...the video was also innovative 💯
Thanks for this one! I recorded a whole Pharcyde show here in LA for their 30 year anniversary album and 50 years of hip hop celebration, and the one and only Derrick Stewart aka Fatlip dropped a comment. Super down to earth group, they were hanging out with everyone after the show.
Fatlip is a genius
Brings me back to a lifetime ago. Life was simple. Skateboarding, hip hop, girls, friends. So many good memories
Runnin is my top 5 favorite song!
Love that song! R.I.P. J Dilla
Mine too
The Pharcyde are so underrated. Legends.

Still remember when Fat Lip got Hip hop quotable in The Source for his verse
I remember that too. Great times, man.
One of the illest verses of all time
This song has been in rotation in my head for a LONG time. lives there rent free and I LOVE IT.
That weather report bassline is 🔥 ... there were a couple of other Golden Era tracks that sampled this, but I am blanking.

("Nevertheless I'll say it again")
"She keeps on passin' me by."
That sample is from friends by whodini
They are Legends! This song is a classic and their whole first album is incredible !
A classic song 🔥🔥🔥, perfect day to play it too!
You ain't kidding 💯🔈🔉🔊

i just love people telling my history that didnt know, its addictive man, all i do is reminiscens listen to this again and again and....
OH MY GOD just realised that my whole life I’ve heard “Chickens are passing me by” 😂
Thanks for clearing that up for me after 30 years.
I can't unhear it now 😂
I used to travel to school on the train and I had this album on my cassette walkman. i played it over and over and over again. I even did an art project for my school, based on the album artwork.
Played this often with my band. And I always thought the key change for the chorus was pure genius! Sampling wins again!
Loved this song when I was a teen. 92 was a great year.
There's a tip of the hat to Pharcyde in Skee-Lo's I Wish. "And these girls keep passin' me by. She looks fly. She looks fly. Make me say my, my, my".

In my Top 3 fave rap songs of all time. This is just one of the best rap vibes out there. Pure perfection!!!!!!!
I love your channel so much. Best channel on UA-cam right now seriously
i believe you forgot the sample from the very beginning of the song. It sounds like guitar scratches...which comes from a Jimi Hendrix song....oh.....@5:23....you just stated it while I was typing! Genius.
saw them for the first time in march in switzerland and couldn’t get this song out of my mind. a classic

This was my jam back in the day! I been checking you for a minute. This convinced me to become member!
Just finished watching your Tribe videos and this is the perfect chaser for me

I swear this channel is curated specifically for me. All the videos are about my favourite songs and artists.
I still can so well remember this as being one of the first songs with a totally different vibe on yo mtv, with an onslaught of naughty by nature and the like, and then this happened. Jazzy, funny, light.. it was awesome then and remains a favorite today.
I love this channel...it offers more than whosampled...the remake, animations and the stories behind are fantastic.
I been waiting for this one. Dtg is a beast on these beats.
Another act I had to look up and, hey! I know Runnin’ - that was huge! Now binging… thanks again, DtG.
Another very well done video!! Much love my brother.

I’m literally about to play this tonight on my radio show. Classic!
LOVE Pharcyde... 90s memories. Who remembers their song "Drop" and the video?
I was 15 when this song came out, but didn’t really discover it until a few years ago. So glad I know it now!
A classic track from one of the best hip hop albums ever. Huge claim but i mean it. Pharcyde for ever, great video, once again!
Great content man, one of my favorite channels
The art of crate digging and sample searching is a lost and dying art.
Love this track man....came out my Junior into Senior Year of Highschool....was part of the soundtrack to that summer, along with....Check Demus and Pliars murder she wrote. TRIBE midnight Marauders....and Cypris Hill Insane in the membrane❤
This is just simply good …🔥🔥🔥
Aww shyt I didn’t know Phife(RIP) and Q-Tip gave them their props! That’s dope af!
I freakin love this channel!!!!! More please, more R&B, more Hip Hop, more rock
"My dear, my dear, my dear,
you do not know me, but I know you very well,

Damn, I wish I wasn't such a wimp!”
Classic among classics
Great video. I love this beat, and the song. Fun and informative. Takes me back!
The Pharcyde saved west coast Hip Hop.
VOLUME 10, AHMAD, FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP, SAAFIR, THE BUMS, ANOTHA LEVEL, THE NONCE ETC... The west was never only Gangster rap.
Someone else who actually remembers the nonce. Nice.
i really really appreciate your videos
Yessir! One of my favorite albums ever!
The Pharcyde was so dope to me and I remember going to the record and buying that tape. I'm old 😂😩
An underrated group. This album is fantastic.
Absolute classic.
That reverse part utilizing the chorus is crazy
👍🏾🤛🏾
The entire album was phenomenal.
I really appreciate you representing the West Coast especially LA and there other things you should go into like Good morning project blowed or hip-hop Café because so many artists came out of that like volume 10 and skew-lo
This song is PERFECT
anybody else get excited thinking he's got a teaser for the next video, only to realize it's a previous video you already saw? 😅
😂 that means you’re a real one 🔥 put those there for the new people - BUT I will say, a lot of good stuff coming the next couple of months, I can’t wait!
Love the breakdown of samples. How did they do that in '92? Were there computers that could do that then?
Another dope one bro 👑💯
Question, a computer on two AT 120's, is that a good idea? Especially with two Serato disk on them. And an Akai controller merriely finger drumming.
Great video as usual. You did fail to mention there are two versions of the song. I prefer the original version where SlimKidTrey doesnt omit the N word in his verse, and Imani's cadence is completely different and better in his verse as well.
Digging the Greats Patreon is the best thing I’ve done
Yes! Love your channel , will be a Patreon member soon because this copyright © foolishness is getting stupid! Shame on UA-cam!
I always equated them more with Souls of Mischief or hieroglyphics than Native tongues.
I need to listen to this album again. If I remember right, I felt like Passing me By was good, but most of the other songs on the album were better.
This guy doesn’t Miss 🔥🔥
One of the greatest hiphop groups of all time
All time classic
I'll never forget listening to this song for the first time with my friend and tripping on Fatlips' verse. Amidst all the hard-core, macho, bitch this and ho that, gangsta shit that was going on at the time, here's some dude saying "damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp"
We need a video of the whole album
U have to do the full album!
Don’t forget The Good Life Cafe or Project Blow, and shout out to Free Style Fellowship
I should probably Google it, but is the similarity with Nightmare on Wax's 1991 album A Word of Science's intro song 'Nights Interlude' a coincidence?
Personally, this is the first time I’ve heard the word “simp” but being as young as I was, didn’t know what it meant. But anyway, they came up with it & that’s what I’m going with
That song reminds me a fair bit of I Wish by Skee-Lo. I think a video on him would be cool.
You gotta cover Yo Moma… I remember blasting this on my way to class in DC. It’s a classic!
Ya momma got an afro with a chin strap
YES. 14 year old me just stopped me in my tracks to watch this immediately.
Brilliant Hip Hop!
The Culture At Its Finest!
Ah yes, "the follow-up" to Straight Outta Compton. I admire your deft dodge of the title to that one.
8:24
"on the far-side" lol.
Love The Pharcyde. I played that tape to death. Definitely one of the most fun hip hop records ever. To me it's a tie between this and The B-Boys Paul's Boutique.
They all were in that same lane if you want to be frank about it
Who actually lived thru this greatness?
Pharcyde introduced me to Dilla. I've been a fan of both ever since
"I still got it... I still got it... she keeps on..."
I love weird west coast hip hop, Freestyle Fellowship, Living Legends, Del, 3MG.
💯
