This game is phenomenal man, but I think everyone who plays this game should atleast have an idea of who Wukong is so I will try to briefly explain the lore I know for anyone whos wants to know.
Sun Wukong comes from a novel named Journey to the West, a 16th century novel that contains mythology, and folktales.
The main character of the book is a monk named Tang Sanzang and he was tasked to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from India. He and 3 others, Sun Wukong, Bai Loong Ma, also known as The White Dragon Horse, Zhu Bajie or Pigsy, and Sha Wujing.
On their journey the have to go through 81 challenges in order to reach Buddha, and they must fight many forms of creatures and yaoguais (demons) aswell.
More importantly, Sun Wukong is the strongest among them, he was born from a rock and is incredibly strong, fast and could transform into 72 superpower, he also has a staff that can become as big or as small as he wants, he is mischievous and pursues freedom and was able to achieve immortality 6 times over but he was such a nuisance to the gods that they despised him, so he was tricked into working for Tang Sanzang by the gods, via a headband. On his own journey, he fights Erlang, the God of War and an army of 100,000 warriors, but he loses, like in the game.
The main character in this game may be a reincarnation of Sun Wukong himself, or a loyal follower, looking for his 6 relics to resurrect him.

@@komedyjatv Thank you, Journey to the West not only has a novel but also has a TV series Journey to the West. it is the Best Classic Chinese Drama of All Time. There are 48 episodes and it is the childhood of so many people. If you are free you can watch it. From music to acting, everything is top notch

Fun facts:
Game Science chose to release on August 20th because it's said to be the birthday of Sun Wukong.
The story of the game seems to happen sometimes after the end of “Journey To The West” story, where the power of Buddha and the other gods are gone, instead the Yaoguai and monsters are taking over the world. So we as players, are not playing as Sun Wukong the monkey king, but as the "天命人" (the English name maybe "Man of Destiny," notice at the end of the final trailer, it writes "confront destiny on Aug 20,2024"). This "Man of Destiny" will be another monkey king trying to bring order and justice back to the world by re-walking the path that Sun Wukong has taken. But there are also other theories so we will find out soon.
I'm very happy that finally people will know more about Chinese mythology, one of the oldest in the world.
Many things that Japan uses in anime, series and the like have a lot of inspiration in Chinese mythology, especially from this tale by Sun Wukong
the watermelon references a plot from the original mythology, in which the buddha helped Wukong to turn into a watermelon and defeated a monster. basically the mondter ate the melon and got kicked by wukong from inside and he surrendered 😂

Knowing little about the background of this game, you would react mostly being confused. In the story of Journey to the West, Wukong was caught and burned in fire for long before his eyes gained ability that could see though all transforms of enemies. Burning materials in fire is a method to refine material into medicine in Dao religion. Wukong was so hard to kill that after he's caught, they tried to kill him by this method but still failed.

@@komedyjatv In China myths, some animals like mouse, wolf, snake, tiger, etc can train and cultivate oneself to attain immortality and magic power, the more they train, they more powerful they are. Some of them could transform into human shape, that's why you see in this game some animal like roles dress, fight, talk, drink like humans do. Some bosses in this game is really funny, the knife wolf boss invited Wukong to study Buddhism instead of fighting when they met. Some evils broke the rules of heaven/nature to cheat or to take shortcuts in the training, they became evil. Wukong is the guy that protect his master from these evils in the journey to the west.
But this game is likely implying a different ending of Journey to The West, a black and deep one maybe.

In journey to the West, Wukong can do 72 transformations so to clear out confusion of why he plays in different forms.
Chinese mythology uses cauldron to make or refine elixirs /alchemy , sometimes to enhance weapons or magic items etc

There is so much in this game's story that its hard to tell what source is the most accurate. Regardless, I've been hyped for this game since its first announcement and demonstration.

Wukong is like Loki and Thor in the same person.. Person 😅 I mean in the monkey. Shape shifting is his thing and he also loves beating people (demon)😅.
We are saying that in the last scene, it's the producer who is talking to the character, and the monster is players who are so eager to play the game but they just can't yet.

because western people do not have idea about daoismo and buddismo ,i feel it is hard for them to understand the seettings and features of the story.
it makes me sad when someone calls our demons oni. Shows nobody knows or cares about chinese mythology and its original. We paved the way for JAPAN hope people put respect on our culture as its not a copy!
