After the job's done, they promise the monkey a spot in the system, but along the way, the monkey takes out quite a few of his old mob buddies. The Golden Band (金箍), also known as "The Seal," is a powerful artifact originating from Guanyin (觀音), the Bodhisattva of Compassion. It was given to Jinchan zi (金蟬子), who later reincarnated as Tang Sanzang (唐三藏), to control Sun Wukong (孫悟空), the rebellious Monkey King. Before his fall from grace, Wukong was a divine being, almost on par with the great Tathāgata Buddha (如來佛). However, after his defiance and chaos in heaven, he was subdued by Buddha and imprisoned under Five Elements Mountain (五行山). Jinchan zi, originally one of Tathāgata’s disciples, was punished for neglecting his duties and sent to the human realm, reincarnating as Tang Sanzang, the monk tasked with retrieving sacred scriptures from the West. When Wukong was released to accompany Sanzang on his journey, Sanzang had no means of controlling the unpredictable and mischievous Wukong. Guanyin intervened and instructed Sanzang to deceive Wukong into wearing the Golden Band, a magical circlet that would bind him. Once Wukong wore the band, Sanzang could recite the Band-tightening Spell (緊箍咒), causing the band to contract and inflict excruciating pain on Wukong, forcing him to obey. The spell was so powerful that it caused Wukong unbearable torment, a constant reminder of his submission. Wukong, once a near-godly figure, was now subject to the will of a human monk through the power of this artifact. Tathāgata promised that if Wukong completed his journey and atoned for his past, the Golden Band would be removed, and Wukong would be granted the title of Buddha. However, it is often interpreted that this promise was never truly fulfilled, as the band remained symbolically, even after Wukong's supposed enlightenment. In this way, the Golden Band represents both the physical and spiritual restraint of Wukong, illustrating the tension between free will and divine control, as well as the enduring punishment and redemption theme throughout the Journey to the West (西遊記).
