Seriously. I live in an apt and have a 63 jtm45 clone and a 67.jmp50w. With vintage cabs. One with old greenbacks. Pre rola. The other scumback my75pvc/h55pvc mix. And they stay on 10 all the time completely dimed. And I just use guitar volume and tone to control gain levels etc. Life is too short to play amps quietly lmao. I see guys on reddit with 5w amps saying they can't get past 2 on the master. Like good lord that must sound bad. Let it breath
Nice, finally someone who appreciates the Laney IRT amps! These amps are so underrated, I think it's because they are too affordable and so most people think they are no good. I liked the Sunn amps and the Laney best.
I didn't like the IRT when I tried it in person, it's not the right sound for me... but it is not a bad amp at all. Laney has a lot of cool amplifiers but many think it is a cheap company. Dumbasses!
@@frankscassi4960 I own a IRT15w and a AOR30w head, love them both. The AOR is one of the nastiest amps out there and damn loud! I use the AOR for rehearsals and it matches the 150w volume of the other guitarists Randall head.
This was great fun! Thank you for your efforts. Master volume amps aren't typically designed to run at max volume. Even Non Master volume amps are hit and miss at full tilt. Great demo
TBF, you just gotta turn the sunns up and let em eat, that's the magic. For those of us that don't doom tho, I gotta say that Sovtek is really impressive.
Egnater really surprised me. So was Hughes&Kettner! I also really liked Ironheart and Mesa/Boogie Dual Caliber, they are both really cool. Makes me pity I didn't but Mesa DC50 when I could. But my favorite is Bassbreaker! It's just amazing!
That's Juicy J's half pint. It's real nice. And yes, the different in volume when you cut the wattage in half is only about -6dB. 120 watters are usually around 121-125dB and 50 watters are around 115-120dB 25 watters are 110-115 db and so on
Wasn't expecting this to be so cut and dried for me, but my choices were really clear. Cleaner tone - the 65 Deluxe on 7 ( not surprising as I'm a mainly Fender guy). Crunchier tones - The Sovtek just destroyed even other amp in the comparison, for me.
It's funny how most of them are only a couple of dBs quieter with the master volume down lower, and how the higher power ones aren't necessarily louder
Also, that was the main reason I wanted to do this. When an amp is cranked it becomes highly inefficient (at least most of them do) and they roll off the bottom end and top and end because they aren't able to reproduce those frequency's at that volume. Usually in tube amps the sweet spot is 3-6 on the master.
@@ShredShed The dB meter was the best part of the video for me tbh. The tones were awesome, but you never get a really good comparison of how loud these amps are. Which one felt the loudest in the room?
Bryce T no problems, most amps are not super efficient when maxed out and lose their frequency response ( low end and top end roll off) they also become very noisy.
I bet that pro jr dropped some jaws. Those little fenders are gold! Can’t go wrong with a Marshall. Peavey sounded like shit pushed through a ball of tin foil. 🤮 Soldano and the Sunn FTW!
I'd be lying if I didn't say how jealous I was that you got to do this. The Jubilee, Soldano, Laney and Hughes and Kettner were my highlights. I feel like a bit of a dumbass for selling my Tubemeister 36 now... btw the Bassbreaker 45 Head is also great if you haven't tried that.
The stiletto is by far my least favorite of the lot (outside of this video as well) but in its defense, the fender wasn't best suited for it. It's single coil, yes? I heard a similar sound on that guitar with a few of the other amps too. I'm sure you've used the les Paul and other guitars with humbuckers... Does it have that "dying" sound through those too? Great video
Number one is the Sunn Model T (sell it to me!), then the Dual Rectifier and the Soldano. Nice comparison. Unfortunately, there is no SLO100 here : I play this sexy thing for its clean tone. Huuuge. And most of all, you don't have a Dual Rectifier 2 channels from 1992/1993. The Rev F for serial FX loop or the early Rev G with the parallel FX loop are the best amps ever made on earth. I own many revisions of this amp, even a pre500 Rev D and a Rackto : nothing compare to the 3 channels. What is yours? A Solo Head made before 2010, or the Multi-watts atm in production? Last but not least : Archon and IronHeart sound good to me in this video, and it's a surprise :) You should add 3 amps to your collection. 1st, the Matamp GT120MV. I use this mammoth beast for doom. Then the Bogner Ecstasy : best FX loop on earth because you can switch serial or parallel. This head has every Marshall amps in. Mine is a 20th anniversary loaded with 6L6s to be fat. And of course the Diezel VH4. I own the stereo one. This is the most versatile amp I had ever played. Pristine clean + AC/DC crunch + Metallica high gain. Awesome. For the lead guitar, I prefer the Rectifier than the Diezel. Played together? This is heaven. The Sunn model T is the last amp I want in my collection. Please, sell it to me !!!
Yeah I think most preamp gain-focused amps usually live between 3 and 6 on the master. They weren't really designed to be cranked in the way that we imagine older amps. That being said if you try them at bedroom level volume without an attenuator allowing you to open them up a bit, they will sound as thin and buzzy as a Metal Zone. Even a Soldano SLO will sound fizzy and unappealing at low volume. They need that middle ground volume.
Call me a non-traditionalist but it seems rather silly to have to turn an amp all the way up to achieve a good sound. None of these sounds were all that great, lots of feedback!
That's the point. The funny thing is whenever I see a band they they are using modelers their lack of stage volume makes them sound thin and let be honest, cranked amps are way more fun to play
Shirley Allen Well, the best sound of Plexis are when are pushed all the way up. Maybe you have to put an attenuator to control the drive of the speakers
It's called knowing your gear. Tube amps need turned up for saturation. There's more presence and attack than you can get from any solid state/digital amp or any pedal. Except for the mesa they all sound amazing.
@@josephfish3353 it depends on music style, heavy metal requires tightness, which would be lost on fully cracked modern mv high-gain amp. They will sound at best on 3, then sound becomes too compressed.
@@stingcarlsson7988 I mean that's fine if you want to sound like everyone else but why not experiment? Try lower output pickups, different speakers and a variety of amps? There's more than one way to get a heavy tone and if anything it can force you to approach your playing differently thus inspire you to write something new.
Daisy chain all of them and then max out a metal zone in from of them all.
The FUCHS sounds amazing
Rockerverb sounded awesome.
I'm a simple man. I see cranked amps and I hit like
Thanks man ; )

That Beta Lead sounds AMAZING for a solid state amp. I would've sworn that it was a tube amp if I didn't already know.
The Model T just wants to scream at you! I like it...
This is a little slice of heaven. Please keep making these videos

the Laney was the best sounding heavier amp here in my opinion, a joy to play ; )

the sunn beta lead rules!

This was an absolute blast.
this was a killer video, i enjoyed every second!
The power tubes in the Mesa are about to blow lol.

The pro with the sg was amazing
damn why havent i found this channel earlier ?? only seen 3 videos and i allready love it ! keep on the good work :D

Yeah man, the laney was bitchen to play. didn't want to stop. Totally under rated for what they sell for used...
how the fuck can someone dislike this?
best reference video ive ever seen
Rockerverb sounded best at all volumes.
This video is awesome, but I wish y'all had miked the Marshall different. I would have like to have heard something off the floor and more on-axis.
oh boy, first the preamp shootout and now this... you've made rotten spoilt brats out of us
It's funny how most of them are only a couple of dBs quieter with the master volume down lower, and how the higher power ones aren't necessarily louder
Yes, but every 6dB is twice the perceived volume. So, jumping from 120dB to 126dB is twice as loud.
Also, that was the main reason I wanted to do this. When an amp is cranked it becomes highly inefficient (at least most of them do) and they roll off the bottom end and top and end because they aren't able to reproduce those frequency's at that volume. The mic placement must of been off or something because most of this sounded muffled. otherwise good video.

1.) Where are you located? Website is broken.
2.) What's your criteria for the 'sweet spot'?
That morgan sounded like complete ass lmao the MIG 60 sounded the best. Ive never liked morgan overhyped hipster amps lmao
