  • We went on a road trip with the Tesla Model 3 and wanted to document the costs and overall user experience with EV charging. We drove from Toronto, Ontario, Canada south to Sunset Beach, North Carolina for a bit of a vacation and then returned home. Total distance traveled was over 3200km!

Hello Kev and Cat, what a nice diversion from the lakeside build, you guys deserve it! Thank goodness Cat didn't have to push the Tesla! LOL 😂 Very interesting information about the cost of traveling with your Tesla, thanks for the break down.

Thanks Donnie. We had never really used the Superchargers before so I found it interesting to see the different rates at different stations and some even having time of use rates as well.

Nice informative video, I see that the road trip was a vacation and you had plenty of time to drive out of your way to find Tesla charging stations. Not mentioning the time it takes to fully charge the car that you did not fully charge at any time in the video.I’m not knocking electric cars but it seems to me that the infrastructure is not really sufficient for a trip where time is of the essence.Love the Lakeside Build keep it up.👍🏻

What we found is that when you first plug in, the charging ramps up to max capacity of the supercharger. Typically either 150kw or 250kw at the newer superchargers. So it looks like the charging time will be short. However, it then slowly drops down to the point where you are getting maybe 50kw. I don’t know if that is for battery preservation or charging capacity?? That is a lot of current to throw at the battery pack all at once.
I agree with you….if time is of the essence and you can’t make it there on a single charge (one stop isn’t bad assuming it’s on the way), do not take an electric car. 😂
I am sure the infrastructure will improve over time (although Elon Musk just fired his entire EV charging team of 500 employees) so that might delay the improvements. 🤷‍♂️
We have owned the Tesla for 2 years and for daily driving it is amazing. This was our first road trip > 500km so we definitely learned a few things and if nothing else proves that a long distance road trip is possible with some patience.
Thanks for watching! Now back to the Build!
