He was basically paying the band, paying tour production and workers, all travel expenses, hotels ,merch and everything out of his own pocket. That included recording and pressing of albums. I believe he said he spent over 3 million of his own money just for the 1 album and short world tour he did. Didn't even break even. If he had a major label backing and even 25% of backing that Metallica had he would still be doing it. I believe the album only sold like less than 100k copies. I don't blame him.
His bass was very audible and somewhat influential on every album after AJFA... I like Jason, but I get tired of these Jason fanboys who keep trying to re-write history.

I'm 40 now, but I can still remember listening to the garage days $5.98 EP and saying to myself "I'm gonna learn everything he just played" and I'm still smashing the 5 strings to this day.

He gave it all he had, and that alone is what makes Jason a total class act. The Echobrain project became too expensive to maintain as a solid band, even Jason admitted it during an interview. But despite the financial burden, he flew wide open with his creative style. This dude is no mere bassist for hire, he was part of Metallica and remains so still.
He will first and foremost always be the Bassist and songwriter of Flotsam & Jetsam for me. The songs he wrote in that band are better than anything he worked on with Metallica imo. Much better bassriffs, Metallica never allowed him to truly shine like he did back then.

I really hope Jason sets up a Newstead UA-cam channel and gets this and future albums onto streaming sites. I get that touring is expensive, but it should be easier for people to find the music so that the fanbase can grow over time. Metallica are so bad now that many people are crying out for an alternative which this music nicely fills and I expect it will also get better over time as the band matures and evolves.

I really hope Jason sets up a Newstead UA-cam channel and gets this and future albums onto streaming sites. I get that touring is expensive, but it should be easier for people to find the music so that the fanbase can grow over time. Metallica are so bad now that many people are crying out for an alternative which this music nicely fills and I expect it will also get better over time as the band matures and evolves.

Reading all the comments I will never understand why people always use phrases such as " sounds like " or " recycled " .... Music is music, and how it comes out of people and them choosing to share it with us is a unique moment in our and their lives. Jason said in an interview that he " makes less than nothing " when he brings new projects out into the public. Enjoy it for what is is : an expression of thoughts, moments, and feelings. Good stuff.

@@king-ci4ob im just kidding with you my friend. Im 49. Been listening to Metallica since i was 13. Jason was actually the bassist in Flotsam and Jetsam in 1981. Then he left when Cliff died to take over bass in Metallica.
