    One other strange feature that I encountered is that the Brymen 789 (but it might be the same for the 786), when used in mV range, retains the 10 Mohm input impedance, while most meters go high-Z on the mV range. Well, it turns out that I managed to measure pA by abusing the Brymen in the mV range using the 10 Mohm input impedance as current shunt :)

    I love my BM869s, but can't they make a meter with a smother selector - one that doesn't take so much force to twist?

    For me, burden voltage is an order of magnitude more important than small parts of a percent inaccuracy. Talking of which, Dave - your magic active microcurrent boards. What's the situation?

    Maybe it's a stupid question but, what does the calibration device do to compensate for the internal resistance of the Brymen and that the Brymen shows exactly the same current measurement as the calibration device?

      Both Brymen are in a line.
      A current travel thru all devices and will be displayed.

    My 869 stopped measuring AC within a year. Sent to service under warranty. They couldn't figure out what's wrong and said the meter needs to be shipped to Taiwan for further analysis and I will have to bear the shipping cost as its not covered in warranty. From my country(India), shipping two ways would easily cost more than what this meter is worth. Decided I will just use the rest of the functionality.
    Within a month after that, the meter started showing 'InERR' in all the modes and its basically a brick now.

    I should have picked on up when I was in Melbourne for a few days last July. Could have had it shipped to my hotel. I thought about a day trip to Sydney. Why do you build these cities so far apart, just a bit off the bottom corner and doesn't look far on the map but it's 900km. That's the same as London to Inverness! And what's with this having the winter in the middle of summer? It was freezing.

    I've been searching for a video of you explaining what is great about the BM786. I assumed you would have made some sort video about what you customized, what's better, etc. But when I search BM786 on your channel, all that comes up is you fixing broken ones, or finding faults. It's almost like you're trying to get people not to buy it. What gives? I'm considering buying one, but would like to know more about what you did!

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  11 місяців тому +3

      Not really. Having two meters is enough to see if one has drifted. If both still read the same then almost certainly the cal is fine.

    But I see them measuring exactly the same...
    Doesn't this just mean that Brymen grew more confident in their products? (or quality control system for that matter)
    I mean, the numbers in the manual don't say anything about their actual accuracy as those numbers aren't a calibration.
    It's a number regarding how confident Brymen is in the product or it's production procedure, but it's not an actual physical property of the meter as the number is not an actual measurement.
    It just makes for a really strange video when you see 2 meters measuring exactly 1,0000 mA and you point to one meter being more accurate than the other.
    And there is of course another thing...that 869 (without S) is probably at least 10 years old. So this 869 holds it's accuracy for at least a decade.
    Something that 786 still has to proove 😉

    • @ryebis
      @ryebis 11 місяців тому +3

      if I'm not mistaken, the 869 did show 100.01mA that matched the Keithley & the source while the other one was between 99.99 and 100.00mA

    • @GannDolph
      @GannDolph 11 місяців тому +3

      The 869 seems an older design. 9v battery versus AA/AAA's in the 786 if i'm not mistaken. I'm holding out for a replacement of the 869 that follows the newer design and tech elements of the 786, including ditching the 9v battery. If it comes along, then i'll wait to see if Dave takes it up as a blue EEVblog version. That's worth waiting for for me at the moment..🤞

    • @mrpetit2
      @mrpetit2 11 місяців тому +3

      @@GannDolph the 869 is an older design, it's been on the market for over 10 years now.
      Thats why I think it's so strange that the 78x serie misses modern features like a pc data interface.
      The price difference between a 789 (top model in the 78x series) and 869s series is not a lot, only about €18, yet apparently that is the price for dual display, 500k resolution and pc data link possibility.
      Not that much of almost a decade of progress.
      To me it always feels that with the 78x series the design has always been held back on purpose to not replace or compete with the 86x series. Especially with not incorporating the data interface.
      I believe it's probably therefore also the only 60k count (or 40k count+) meter on the market (certainly with a young design) without data link capabilities (or dual display for that matter), and that says a lot.

    • @GannDolph
      @GannDolph 11 місяців тому

      @@mrpetit2 interesting, thanks. also makes me worried that any replacement to the 869s will come at a steeper price :(

    • @mrpetit2
      @mrpetit2 11 місяців тому +2

      @@GannDolph That's almost inevitable. Brymen has become hugely popular in the last decade, and for the quality, features and specs the bm869s offers, nothing comes close, not even at double the price if you ask me.
      I'm more curious what new features a 869s successor will have. And for that matter also features on what the successor of the Fluke 289 will have (that design is even older, I think it dates back to ~2007 if i'm correct, so 15 years now.
      I don't care much for the scope or trending features in datalogging (a pc does better), but I'm curious if they''ll actually incorporate new electrical units to measure, like measuring inductance, or watts, or (milli)amp-hour, (milli)watt-hour etc. With those last two I think multimeters in general are really late, as portable devices and their energy consumption have been really important for 20 years or so now, and there are not much devices that can measure that in high accuracy.
