Thank you all for your support. We got a lot of feedback regarding the pronunciation of “Betelguese” and it came down to a miscommunication between our writer and voice actress. In the script for our video the character’s name was written as “Betelguese” (which is what is seen on his grave, in the ad the Maitland’s find, and how it is written in the movie script). Our actress pronounced it the way you hear. There is a debate on how that word, which is Arabic in origin, should be pronounced in English from “beetle juice,” “beetle jews,” and a variety of others. The movie obviously kept the most humorous way most are familiar with. Ultimately we made a decision which annoyed some of you. It wasn’t out of pretension, just a miscommunication and we appreciate your feedback.
Same! I just thought he sent them off with a classic cartoon bash on the ol' noggin to get them out of the house/scare them off, not straight up kill them! I'll have to have another look next time I watch it, but unless I'm misremembering things which prove otherwise, I'm still not convinced he actually killed them.
Fantasy is when the hero descends into an underworld and emerges triumphant; horror is when the hero(es) descend(s) into an underworld and do(es)n’t come back.
Considering how they reacted to being grabbed by their shrimp dinner I think they would've had a similar reaction "let's sell tickets!" Also at the end of the film this is essentially what is happening and they "all live together in peace"
THANK YOU for the spoiler warning, despite the movies being classics or just having a certain age. Because way too many people always assume everyone knows them already or has seen them. Much appreciated that you show that you care and not spoiling the fun for some folks.
Absolutely! I hate it when people justify that by saying it's too old to be spoiled etc.- as if younger folks don't exist, and everyone on earth has seen all of the enormous amount of older media that exists. You gotta give people that chance to enjoy things firsthand!
Was gonna comment on the pronunciation but seeing the pinned comment I'll instead say thank you for actually engaging with us. It's very much appreciated.
We did consider it. Ultimately we wanted to illustrate the breadth of the subject by illustrating the trend as far back as 1963 and up to the more recent 2007. We also considered 13 Ghosts and Thirteen Ghosts but we tried to keep with classic works most would be familiar with. We may compare both versions of The Haunting, the first season of the Netflix series, and the book when the second season releases.

Fun video. Sorry everyone keeps commenting about the pronunciation. They must forget how it is spelled in the movie (not the title, but when they show it in written form like on the tombstone.)
Apparently the actress reading the script for this episode pronounced it exactly as it was written, “Betelguese”. Its actually the name of a star and like the Ghost With the Most it is also pronounced like the film's title.
Was thinking the whole mispronunciation was a play off the "invert" subject of the video. But I'd say this was 20% about 'BeetleJuice' and 80% everything else
i thought it was a joke at first because Adam reads it wrong in the movie when they get the flier and i was like oh haha and then she said it like that everytime and i was like ooooo oh no

Good analysis, especially combining these disparate flicks, regardless of their merits or lack thereof. Another not so good one that could be brought into the mix is "What Dreams May Come". Both it and "Beetle Juice" draw on the eschatology of Swedenborg, as do spiritualist motifs in many modern stories. I would categorize “What Dreams May Come” in the realm of ‘katabasis’ stories like those of Orpheus/Eurydice and Heracles. Both involve descending into an “underworld” but perhaps the separation is the Haunted Descent involves a spirit(s) forcing people to descend from the earthly plane further into the spirit world rather than in katabasis where earthly inhabitants willfully descend into the spiritual plane.
