That Don Knotts clip at the end from The Ghost and Mr. Chicken made my night
The nod to James Rolfe made mine.
Tbh ever since I was a child I wanted to live in a house like this or a Victorian house
silly babybat yeah I appreciate the Victorian aesthetic although it's not for me
If I may what you want is a neo-Victorian
One of my pals bought a genuine Victorian and Lord give me strength that house is SO EXPENSIVE to maintain. And because it's a historic home she CAN'T have it weatherized
One more reference for many kids growing up in the 1960s, 1970s and even the early 1980s: the front cover of Walt Disney's Thrilling Chilling Sounds of the Haunted House LP. They changed the LP cover color background from white to orange and even changed the inner record sleeve, but the spectacular painting of a "dilapidated old mansion" painted with acrylics by Paul Wenzel (created as concept art for the attraction The Haunted Mansion) remained until new recordings were put under the album's title in 1979. The new release had a haunted house too, but the artwork on the 1979 release never caught me the way the 1964 release did. (Then again, neither did the record inside.)
Gene Savage I had that album and even wore it out because my kids loved it so much. We’d play it every morning while they got ready for school. It was their treat if they would get ready without any problems, lol.
Very fascinating topic especially since it put in an aspect of architecture that most of us wouldn't know and gave us it's name, the Second Empire.
Right? This channel isn't only a fun dive into spooky lore, it's also surprisingly educational.
The algorithm did real good with this one.
There are stories of haunted houses going back to Ancient Greece, but I love how this video focuses on Second Empire architecture. Very cool!
Great video, very well done! Just one correction. The Victorian house is not the Bates Motel. That is Norman’s family home. The motel is next to it and is your standard strip mall type construction - that is my memory anyway.
Very well done. My grandparents, who were born in the 1920s, said that there were many of these 2nd Empire and other Victorian style houses, the huge old houses, were abandoned and left to rot. Of course, as teenagers and young adults, they would break into these houses. My grandfather told me the first date he ever had with my grandmother was a double date, and he and his buddy took the "girls" to a huge old, abandoned Victorian house, left them by the front step, snuck around to the rear of the house and climbed up to the attic. Then they got inside the house and ran down the stairs yelling all the way to scare their dates! My husband's mother also has said that during the 1960s, due to the economy, many more of these houses were demolished or parted out as apartments. Definitely, they are a lot of upkeep, and many people (especially after property and income taxes started), couldn't afford the upkeep and heating.
For those that enjoy a dose of horror and a spooky Second Empire House, I would recommend picking up a copy of the fabulous game, "Betrayal at House on the Hill". The game is full of all the best tropes and has many, many alternate haunts which make for nearly endless replay-ability. My family played every weekend for at least six months and we're always keen for a game, especially this time of year.
The house that Charles Addams passed by as a teen just happened to be on Elm Street.
I smiled at that part.
It's so apropos, I can't accept it.
What creeps me out the most out of this style of architecture is the weird little rooms at the tops of the towers, that barely look big enough to even have someone in them. Like, why??? Was it purely stylistic? What possible function could they have served, other than perhaps roof access? Wouldn't the upper levels become increasingly unsafe and unstable as the houses dilapidated? I imagine I'd feel pretty unsafe up there, like I'm going to fall through or something. Everything about it just screams "no".
The Marsten House from Stephen King's Salem"s Lot looks very much like these houses.
Yes, I was waiting for that one to pop up. Maybe in the next episode, if there is one. 👻
Really dig these deep delves. The research shows. You manage to avoid the sensationalism and deliver instead, a quality that is not only remarkable, but enriching. Thanks!
i love these haunted history vids
Fantastic work. My fav subject for sure, great to see it in a break down form.
I love your varied ending clips. This one is especially great with Don Knotts.
Didn't know about the Hopper/Hitchcock connection. That's so cool!
I would have included Salem's lot house too.
Thank you for giving Edgar is props.🌹
That should be his props.
Very well done. I love that you went into the architecture details.
looking at a Second Empire house sends shivers down my spine
Great job. Thank you so much for this video. Love that second empire design.
I love Haunted House/ Castle story’s.
very much so
Just found your channel, I love it!!!!!!
We are so happy you enjoy our work! It really means the world.
Nice job, Very informative! Second empire is my favorite style of architecture. Always wanted to own a house in this style.
Very nice video Heidi. Really enjoyed it! I liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Great work, I really enjoy the content.
I love old houses and have been fascinated by them since I was a little kid. If I'm haunted by anything, it's an almost overwhelming compulsion to some up with stories about who might have lived there and what happened to them.
great video, i enjoyed it. thank you x
While not originally next door to each other, the Munsters house and the Ghost and Mr Chicken house now sit right next door to each other on the Universal backlot
You skipped over Mary Shelly's A Modern Prometheus (what we call Frankenstein). It also was set in a dark and foreboding castle. I enjoyed the video very much, though this more the history of the American Haunted House as seen in TV or movies. No so much the history of haunted houses in general.
In Mary Shelley's novel there actually isn't a castle, this is one of the many attributes we associate with Frankenstein. His experiments were set in an apartment. In our video we do focus quite a bit on American influences including poems, short stories, novels, paintings, comics, and how they influence the pop culture idea of haunted houses in TV and movies.
Scooby Doo and psycho, Addams family, and of course dracula peaked my interest in haunted house
One of the most interesting videos on UA-cam. I think I’ve watched this 3 or 4 times.
Great video!👏🏼👏🏼
The Real Ghostbusters has a episode about Heck House the most haunted in the world with 2436 ghosts residing there brought to life with a spell that keeps them from leaving.
phantom manor in the thumbnail 🤙🏾
love this
Great video I to like spooky houses
New subscriber also
I notice you used the Old State Department Building (now the Eisenhower Building) as one of your examples. I love the building.
Phantom manor is the bomb.
I can't remember if I wrote something last night or not so if I'm repeating, don't mind me lol. This was, without doubt, one of the most well-put-together videos I recall watching in quite a long time. I love paranormal and mystery and scary anything, so I watch a LOT of them. I thoroughly enjoyed it and actually put it in my "writing" folder as a couple of things you said were so informative, I want to keep them in mind in my short stories I write. Please don't stop putting out this kind of excellent information. You definitely have my new subscription.
That truly means the world. We love all things spooky and take get pleasure in sharing it with others. We make our videos for people like you and your comments keep us motivated. Thank you so much.
Great video

The Second Empire aesthetic was popular RIGHT before the Great Depression. With their wealthy owners gone or bankrupt they wound up falling into disrepair, abandoned, or cut up into apartments and tenements.
When America got back on its feet economically great American architecture really came into its own and became the popular thing. There was less of a push to make everything look European. Great American architecture focused on clean lines, simple forms, and letting lots of light into the home. Like the American Foursquare, the Ranch, or the Tri-Level.
Bottom line the Second Empire style was a fad that America moved on from.
a Second Empire house would be a grate place to have a Halloween party
Tbh I thought this was the house from Casper....I'll see myself out now.
Old Dark House, The Haunting, The legend of the Hell House, Burnt offerings, poltergeist, and shammy shim the shammy.
My favorite style, Victorian Gothic ! The spookier the better !
Hey, I would love to own one. Classic.
Damn, I would LOVE a second empire mansion.
If you watch closely, during this clip, there is what looks like an early rendering of Jack Skellington. A part where they mention Edgar Allen Poe and his poem about haunted houses. Look for it for yourself.
Great video! I can’t wait for haunting of hill house season 2. Frank Lloyd Wright has designed a lot here in Florida!
You aint fool me thats phantom manor in the tumbnail.
It's true! We actually mention it in the video
Empire Houses Aren't the only haunted dwellings we have here in the world but also apartment buildings are known to have haunted apartments plus Hotels and their rooms where in this case actual deaths happened in some of the most famous apartment complexes and Hotels just like that one Hotel where the lady "Lisa Lang" died in.
HetaliaRussiaFan 01 it’s a history of the popular idea of a cliche haunted house type

You mention 1855 but show a brochure for the 1889 expo.
Harper Goff would also work, differently, on the "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" set.
Don’t know why that clip from the shining was shown… That was a haunted hotel not a house
Walpole not Warpole.
Hitchcock would be proud sorry had to
I like Queen Anne Victorian houses.
This is very informative, just not as enjoyable as this channel’s monster based
this channel is great but its really small
We are working on getting more content out on a regular basis. We've got the audio halfway done for the next video. We appreciate the support and hope you stick around!
