  • Different EVs have different charging support for AC and DC. If you have a BYD Atto 3 or the BYD Dolphin, you might notice that your EV isn't charging as fast as you'd expect. Most EVs from China such as BYD and GWM Ora support single-phase AC charging with up to 7kW. But why are you only getting 3kW when plugged into an 11kW AC charge point?
    We explain the AC and DC charging support for the BYD, the types of chargers available and what you should do to get the fastest charging possible for your EV.

    Some cars have 3 separate onboard chargers for 3 phases.
    So, when doing 3 phase at 16A, all 3 are active.
    But if you give it 1 phase 32A, it combines 2 chargers via internal contactor.
    But to save money, some cheap cars have just 1 32A onboard charger.

    • @soyacincautv
      @soyacincautv  7 місяців тому +2

      It depends on the charge point operator. Some charge by time (per hour or per minute) or per kWh. kWh-based calculation is a fairer way to charge as you only pay based on what you use and not how long your car is plugged in.
      If the charger is priced by time, it is more worth it for cars that can receive higher 11kW or 22kW.

    Atto is excellent value but at end of day is a budget vehicle. The higher powered MOSFETs (solid state switches) cost a lot of money. If they were incorporated in the Atto3 it would be a significantly more expensive vehicle, just to save a few minutes at a charge station.

    • @soyacincautv
      @soyacincautv  7 місяців тому

      You have to apply with TNB and justify and you would only want to do this if you're installing a DC fast charger. For AC charging, a typical home power setup is more than adequate, just that if you house is single phase, you may want to upgrade to a 3-phase power supply.

      @@soyacincautv Do residential houses in Malaysia have a very high power input?
      I am in China, the electricity power of a single household is single-phase 220V/40-50A, which is not enough to install a 7-11KW EV charging box, so most users would install a second cable and electricity mete specifically for EV charging.

    so eV capable for 3 phase is better? as they can use all 1 phase and 3 phase charger at optimum level?

    • @soyacincautv
      @soyacincautv  7 місяців тому +5

      This is one aspect to look for in an EV. Generally, three-phase on-board charger is better than a single phase one.
      But you should also consider things like battery (size and technology) as well as DC charging.
      In the case of the BYD Dolphin, some of the advantages are:
      It uses BYD's Blade battery: The Blade battery is based on lithium-ion phosphate. This battery is safer, has a higher energy density and has a better lifespan. It also can be charged to 100% more regularly than other EV batteries.
      DC charging: The Dolphin Dynamic Standard can DC charge up to 60kW while the Premium Extended can charge up to 80kW. This can charge the Dolphin from 10 - 80% in 35 and 30 minutes.
      Overall efficiency: The BYD Dolphin is one of the most efficient EVs we've tested. This means you don't have to charge it often especially when travelling long distances.

    For example I frequet Suway Pyramid and I see that there are Gentari Chargers like what you are using in your video
    But I also see the same exact Gentari Chargers in CharEV..
    Won't be getting a BMW/Mini EV
    So for my situation, should I be subscribe to ChargEV's memberships, jomcharge or just use Setel?
    Thanks!!

    • @soyacincautv
      @soyacincautv  2 місяці тому

      Hi. It depends on which charger you use more often. For Gentari, the membership which costs RM899/year gives 50% off on all chargers. This is great if you often use a Gentari charger and plan to do lots of long distance trips. Their DC charger is effectively RM0.75 per kWh with the membership.
      For ChargEV, the previous highlight was unlimited free charging using the card. However, most of these chargers are slowly being discontinued in favour for pay per use. With ChargEV membership, you get a slightly cheaper rate than non-members. The discount is not as significant as Gentari's 50% off.

      It is due to the DC charging curve. Explained at 5:41. At 60%, it drops to 58kW, then around 95% it drops to 33kw. That's why you should just stop at 80% and don't charge to full. Not only it takes longer time, it is more expensive to charge if the charger is priced per minute.

    In Europe and America they were complaining about 50kw/h as opposed to 170kw/h with the XC40 at 350KW/H level 2 charging station.
    At 170kw/h it takes you at least 1/2 hour to go from 20% to 80%. HYDROGEN FUEL CELL TAKES YOU FIVE MINUTES TO GO FROM 0 TO 100%. The lithium ion opportunists had to force l-ion batteries down our throats for their lithium ion Wall Street investment profits pipe dream.

      Yeah, you still have to drive to a filling station to fill up your hydrogen. Cant be done while sleeping at home. And have you seen how much it cost to fill up hydrogen

    • @petertraveller6421
      @petertraveller6421 7 місяців тому +2

      Maybe hydrogen is faster to fill up, but don't forget what is the price for this faster fill up, Björn Nyland has a video where he refill Toyota Mirai in Norway, price for refill was 85 euros. And hydrogen car is also electric car, Björn said that can drive 600 km with 1 tank, if you don't go too fast, BUT when you take your speed up to 120 km/h highway speed, Mirai can only go 400 km with 1 tank of hydrogen, so 1000 km cost about 212 euros. I don't have so much money to waste, with EV 60 euros is enough for same trip. 1 extra bonus, hydrogen car cost about 70 to 80 thousand euros, and if fuelcell breaks after warranty, it can be anything between 40 to 100 thousand euros to replace. So EV is much better to average person 's wallet. Example Hyundai ioniq 5 can charge 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, hydrogen is not so much faster.

    what a joke to tell that charging EV is at the speed of refilling petrol... EV especially those China one is still far from being convenient for a need to charge outside the house, that's why people staying in apartment may not consider EV....also time is money especially on a tiring long drive on highway, the good thing is charging EV at low speed allows you to spend more time at the perhentian to take shower and it make your drive more refreshing and safe....

      as chargers become available everywhere, one will be able to charge when convenient not when needed. it means you do NOT wait for the charging to complete or to hot 80%. you just leave when you need to, because next time you park, whether to office or to get a breakfast you can charge again. unlike fueling stations, chargers can be everywhere.

      In China, AC charging piles are generally home charging piles. Home charging stations are used for charging at night or leisure time and do not require particularly fast speeds. The commercial charging piles outside are basically DC charging piles. Most cars use DC charging piles to charge to 80% and it only takes 30 minutes

      @@chjin1796 why wait for 30 minutes? why insists on charge to 80%? next time u park somewhere there is chargers available there. no need to let charging change your routine. that is the beauty of having vast charging network. charging speed becomes less important.
