    I rented 5150s when they first came out to avoid taking an amp on the plane. I loved them. Suited my clean and dirty sides very well. I always figured I would own one but never got around to buying one.

    I had a 6505+ come in to the shop with a lot of neglect. It had issues where the volume on both channels wouldn't kill the sound and any time you reduced the controls under 3 it would started to increase again and sound horrible. Caps were shot especially the decoupling cap. It looked the same way as that one does

    Would like to learn more about cleaning pots. I have deoxit but you mentioned a second lubricating step. I have a 2000 model Eventide and the buttons need help too. Also an even older Rockman XPR with the same button issues, they need to be cleaned. My local tech says he only wants to work on point to point style circuits, no modern PCB things, so I watch faithfully.

      He said he'd use Fader Lube after the Deoxit. Fader Lube (also called F5) is a product made by Deoxit so maybe he's using D5 first as a cleaner then F5 for lubrication.

    Since the EVH's came from the SLO, how much SLO and/or Peavey DNA is in them? Since Fender actually makes these did they put their "DNA" into these in the way of design or parts? Just curious. I think Eddie should have just had Soldano make the EVH SLO and be done with it.

      This is the Peavey, and it's lots like an SLO in the preamp, buuuuut:
      - they tacked on an extra gain stage
      - they got rid of the separate crunch/clean circuit from the SLO
      - the tonestack driver is a plate output stage with a truckload of NFB and a voltage divider before the tonestack to intentionally load it down

    I've got a Peavey Classic 50 410 that I have not powered up for two 1/2 years. It was working fine when last used. Should I just power it up and start using it once in a while? It's been in my living room the whole time. It's sitting right next to a large air purifier w/ionizer so not much dust. Should I build one of those limiters maybe? I really don't have any other need for one. Also I have a Carvin DCM 2000 amp I inherited nonworking from my brother. Is this amp good for a guitar amp, or a home stereo system or what? Worth repairing? My brother has a set of the big Klipsch Horns so I assume he was going to power those with it.

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 2 роки тому

      I believe Uncle Doug has a video on building and use of the light bulb current limiter. If you can trust yourself with it’s use, yes, build one.
      About the Classic 50, age and temperature are determining factors of electrolytic capacitors. How old is it? Did it ever get really hot? Was it maintained? Do you like/care about it?
      Answer those questions for yourself and proceed with caution or courage.

    Is the bias mod on these amps worth the trouble?

    • @ExitThirteen
      @ExitThirteen 2 роки тому +1

      As an owner of two 5150's, and a person who does tech work as a hobby, personally I think the bias mod is worth it. Peavey has their tube stuff biased pretty cold, most Peavey tube amps are biased around 35-40% of max dissipation of their output tubes. In the case of the 5150, it makes more sense to bias them cold from factory, as colder bias translates to earlier breakup with more "crunch", which is the goal of this amp. Putting in adjustable bias can help "dial in" more headroom and a little bit more of a cleaner sound if you so choose. I like having the option of being able to "dial in" a little more headroom, or back it off for more crunch. It also is good to have the bias adjustable so when you put new tubes in, you won't have to worry about the potential of over-dissipating them. Just my $.02. :-)

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 роки тому +2

      It's not as crucial IMO as changing the heater wiring. The current drawn by the 6L6s likes to nuke the ribbon cables/connectors.
      As far as bias goes, the output tubes here have very little impact on the sound.

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 2 роки тому +2

      Some like it some don’t. The point of the amp was to have the gain all coming from the preamp section. I just picked one up without a bias mod, don’t plan on doing it. When researching about it I seem to be finding a lot of folks either aren’t doing it or didn’t really get what they wanted from it. Euge Valovirta just did a video on de-modding his 5150 and his grin while playing it after it was reverted back to stock kind of told me whether the bias mod was really worth it (probably not). I think it sounds great as is personally, or throw your favorite OD in front of it. Either way it rips. To each their own.

    Leave it to a 5150 user to keep the gain at 7😂 former owner of 3 separate 5150’s, I’ve paid my dues lol for anyone out there who still uses a 5150 you’d be very surprised how heavy it can still sound with the gain below 5. Second point of contention: if you take it out of your bedroom and actually turn it up, you will not need to move the resonance and presence controls to that extreme degree
