3:58 That was me :-) I said that. Yes, thats absolutely true. In 1995 after this tour, it was all too much for him. After the tour ended and with some time passing after it, he told the band that he does not want to tour the world again with all the huge Dire Straits circus that it had become. The travelling, the huge arenas, the press conferences and the busy everyday schedule with basically no time for yourself for 1 or 2 years straight (being on tour). You can read that in all the documentaries about him and the Straits and hear it in his interviews. This (last) tour alone lasted 14 months and included 229 shows in 19 countries. ...You both guys are so lovely!!! Amongst all the reaction channels I watch. You two are most sweet together! All the best and cheers from Germany.
Another fantastic song from Dire Straits. The 1st half displays Mark's unique singing voice and the 2nd half is so uplifting with fantastic playing from Paul Franklin on the Pedal Steel Guitar.
I have read your reactions about why there are so many people, I will answer that Dire Straits was the number one band before breaking up, they filled the stadiums more than any other and they sold records that the others did not arrive, although now the music press praises other bands Either for interest or for marketing, let me recommend a dire straits song where eric clapton accompanies him. the song is called Think I Love You Too Much (Knebworth Festival, 1990)
By the way: You guys HAVE to watch the "Guitar Stories Mark Knopfler SkyArts1" documentary here at UA-cam! Just type it in! Its only 44:00 minutes. The narrator and host is the "guy in the blue jacket" you really liked on stage in the live videos (besides the happy drummer :-) John Illsley - dire straits bass player. Meeting Mark and speaking about his iconic guitars and sounds. Its SO interesting and lovely for Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits fans! ...Check out Minutes 13:08 in the documentary for example. Him explaining and playing "Romeo and Juliet" on his legendary Resonator Continental guitar. etc. Its so good ...
Yeah that's a great documentary, as is the episode of Brian Johnson's Life on the Road with Mark where they visit their old haunts in the North East and discuss their early days including a visit to the Spanish City. Johnson showing Mark his Tunnel of Love lyrics written into the tiling outside the entrance of the revamped site is a particularly sweet moment. Watching them singing Hole in the Road by Bernhard Cribbins is delightful too!
Love your reactions - Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists, musicians, lyricists and performers out there. Totally unselfish - watch his concerts with Emmylou Harris. The guitar solos tell the story so well. If I could play anywhere close to his level of skill for 1 day - I'd be in heaven. Yes - Mark and Gilmour (add Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty to the list) and there's just about 10% of the era's greatest. I'll repeat - I LOVE your reactions. Keep doing them
I don't care about the Davild Gilmoures or other guitarrists in this world. MK with his unique style and they joy he has brought me (Pink Floyed is not my cup of tea, I have to admit) durign so many years is the absolute GOAT to me.
Hi, once again, the studio version is so beautifully mixed that it deserves a listen too. In the same spirit (song construction I mean) you can have a listen to Where Do You think You’re Going? The 1988 remix version (Money For Nothing greatest hits) + the original 1979 version (Communiqué album). What’s more, you can’t go wrong with Dire Straits Live!! They must be one of the best live musicians in history. So tight, precise and everything. And Mark Knopfler has a unique touch and the greatest feel when he performs. The guitar, as you already said, is his other voice. He really can make it speak, cry, weep, scream, shout, whisper, talk, complain, plead, protest, celebrate…
Hi from Austria! Dire straits was my first concert when I was 13 years old. I still love the band so much, and I enjoy watching your reactions... Have you reacted to " private investigation"? This song is very very special, and I loved it after I saw it live..
Can never get enough of Dire Straits, especially live, 'Telegraph Road', 'Sultans of Swing', 'Brothers in Arms', 'Tunnel of Love', all classic Dire Straits songs to name but a few! Love this one too, they are fantastic live, such masterpieces. One of my favourite solo Mark Knopfler songs is 'What It Is', written about Edinburgh (my home town!) and the official video for the song was filmed there too, absolutely love it! Thanks so much for a great reaction, guys! 😊👍
it's totally true... and you hit the nail on the head... Mark is indeed one of the Greatest...(to me thé Greatest).... but yet...sooo humble and down to earth... and that's why we all love Mark so much....
I agree with you Dominika. Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are cut from the same cloth. Modest, gifted musicians. As an observation, while the live concert recordings are up-beat and dynamic, quite a lot of the finer details of arrangement and Mark's vocals are lost due to the large atmosphere of the auditoriums and extraneous crowd noise. Some tracks are more impactful and expressive as Studio recordings. I look forward to more!
3:51 This is true, Mark did comment in interviews how he ended Dire Straits because he realized it was too big when he could no longer recognize the faces of the crew, nor acknowledge them by name. Incidentally, this tour in 91/92 was the last time Mark performed On Every Street until 2015 - I think it was Milwaukee - when it appeared again out of nowhere, 23 years later, after Mark coaxed Richard Bennett to dust off his pedal steel. Richard did a fabulous job all those many years after legend Paul Franklin’s performance year. I think the only tune that had a longer gap between drinks was Once Upon in the West, 1983 to 2019, 36 years. Mark’s last solo concert was at Madison Square Garden in September, 2019.
another of Knopfler's superb mystery / private investigator story songs 🙂 when they played this in Sydney in 1992, it was SO LOUD that some people walked out of the concert hall! the story of how Dire Straits eventually ended is a little multifaceted, but a lot of it was driven by the impact it was having on the marriages/relationships of a few of the band members and their wives/girlfriends; being in one of the world's most popular bands, travelling and playing concerts for a year or two with few breaks, can - they assure me ;-) - be very difficult... Mark Knopfler & bass player John Illsley are the original 2 band mambers from the Straits beginning in 1978. various additional band members have been added and left over the years, including those who go on tours. this final On Every Street tour (On The Night live recording) was the most band members in the Straits, including the addition of a percussionist alongside the drummer, and of course the magic brought by Paul Franklin on the pedal-steel guitars.
Mark has some masterpieces in his solo career . ( Darling Pretty , What it is , Sailing to philadelphia , Boom like that , Wye eye man , Everybody has to pay etc.
There were four of them by the time On Every Street album was recorded : Mark, John, Guy and Alan plus people invited for the recording and then the tour: sax player Chris White (who had worked with Mark during BiA tour), guitarist Phil Palmer, drummer who had replaced Jeff Porcaro as he was originally planned to be on the tour as he's played in studio but he resigned and Chris Whitten jumped in, pedal steel master Paul Franklin and obviously amazing percussionist Danny Cummings who like Guy Fletcher appeared in Mark's band later on during his solo career
I was at one of Mark's solo gigs when he announced a saxophone player was joining them for the night, but I didn't catch whether it was Mel Collins or Chris White and I was seated too far away and it had been too many years for me to recognise which. The way Mark spoke, he lived nearby and had decided to join the band just for that night. Whichever it was he still had it!
Terrific song that shows how good Dire Straits were right to the end. I think I'm reading your tastes on the band, and you'll probably enjoy Down to the Waterline, and Love Over Gold
That wasn't a clarinet, but another reed instrument heard a lot by smooth jazz artists like Kenny G, a soprano saxophone. Love your enthusiasm for these great songs. Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler is a very special guitarist. Keep e'm coming!
One last thing! Sorry ... you also HAVE to check out his "One evening with Mark Knopfler" live concert here at UA-cam of 2009. Before each iconic song he introduces his guitars and shares a little bit of stories to them or the song....such a good concert! Great quality and very intimate.
One thing one always notices, of course, a sign of the times, NO FRIGGIN' MOBILE PHONES. Those were the days when music was not just a cheap sensation to be repeated over and over cause it has no more meat on it and does not consist just of watered down versions from yesteryear, like nowadays.
It is true Dominika that during this tour (at the time one of the biggest grossing tours of all time, made him 10s of millions of pounds) was the end of Dire straits. Last tour and last album before he went solo because it just became a machine. I saw them in Dublin Ireland on this tour and it's still the best concert I've ever been to.
As I mentioned in your last reaction, I think you missed out on "Where do you think you are going". And when you are done with this it is well worth checking out the live versions of all the songs you reacted to from different gigs. Cause they are never the same (see Brothers in Arms at the Mandela concert 1985, sorry, Andrei, more tears, I am afraid;)).
Great reaction to another of their awesome songs, thank you! There is a doco out there that you may really enjoy in your own time (maybe not for reactions) that the bass player from Dire Straights narrates, it is a walking tour with Mark to the places where he picked up his various guitars over the years and why. Very interesting, and a great insight to Mark as a musician. A Google search should pull it right up! As an interesting side note, Mark was a very avid motorcycle enthusiast for many years....right up until he had an accident he nearly didn't survive. We are very fortunate that he is still writing and performing awesome music today!🤘
Indeed, and trooper that he is Mark still went on tour even though he had to perform sitting down due to his back injury. I had the pleasure of seeing one of those concerts. Despite his discomfort he was as wonderful as ever.
Hey guys, another brilliant reaction- love your chemistry 😀 I remember meeting Mark and the band on that tour after a gig with my parents and had a little chat and he signed some stuff. He was very down to earth and friendly, as were the rest of the band. Mark has often done other stuff away from dire straits and has often been spotted doing very intimate, much, much smaller venues away from straits. Sometimes just playing and jamming in pubs. A good one to react to is The Notting Hillbillies ' I feel like going home' live. This was another band that Mark was a part of and his guitar solo at the end of this song is beautiful! Anyway, keep em coming ❤😮
Just saw this after seeing your reaction to "You and your Friend" from the same album.. thanks for this since I love this song and it ranks among my top five Mark Knopfler songs..I see that you have also reviewed his "Planet of New Orleans" song, another of my favourites..my only request would be to check out a few of his great solo numbers also like"Boom like that" , "Sailing to Philadelphia ", "Border Reiver".. thanks.
I think the instrument is a soprano sax, but I didn't get a good look at it. Musicians sometimes smile when they realise how great the whole thing sounds or when a member of the band does something amazing and surprising. Love you guys. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Hi guys Wonderful reaction as ever. I think you would love a live performance with Emma Lou Harris of a song called Done With Bonepart. It's a much older Mark and a song from his solo catalogue. Take care!! Love your reactions!!!
You guys should listen to a more recent Mark Knopfler....this is an album called Down the road wherever....its a double album and its great. Try the first track...Trapper Man....then just explore the album. You both would love this album. Mark 30 years removed from this concert. Same sound and warm qualities of his voice...his guitar...his wit...and his band. I love Dire Straits. PEACE
Sorry for the delay but I've only been following you. I wanted to answer your question about the band members. I'm a huge DS fan and I was at this show in 1992 in Milan (Italy). They did 4 nights and I went to all 4. In this live there are only two original members: Mark Knofler and John Illsley (bass guitar). In reality, the two keyboars players Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher also appeared as members of the band from the early 80s until their final dissolution in 1995. All the others on stage were session musicians. Phil Palmer (2nd guitar) is a great guitarist and composer who has collaborated with Frank Zappa, The Who, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for fears, Robbie Williams. Chris Whitten on drums was Paul McCartney's drummer for many years. Danny Cummings on percussion has worked with David Gilmour, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Depeche Mode, Elton John, Simply Red. Paul Franklin on steel guitar has collaborated with Sting, Peter Frampton and Barbra Streisand. Finally Chris White on sax has played with Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones and Robbie Williams. I would like to point out that there is an active band, DIRE STRAITS LEGACY, which includes Phil Palmer, Danny Cummings, Alan Clark and Mel Collins (who played sax on the first DS albums and in the live Alchemy). They travel the world playing DS music. They've just been to Milan and I went to see them. Very very good. You can find their videos on UA-cam including here a part of Live in Rome.
Hi. I really enjoy the reactions that the songs produce in you, especially those of Dire Straits, honestly from this side you feel that you are discovering a new musical world and at some point I envy you 😊.... It's like they just said in the reaction to On Every Street, Knopfler disbanded Dire Straits because they had gotten too big. But his prolific solo career was also important, perhaps not so much in sales but in calls. He also had a side project in '90 or '91, The Notting Hillbillies, they did just one album which is an absolute gem. They play old American songs and there is only one original song, Your own Sweet way, where Mark is obviously the author. The live videos of The Notting Hillbillies are great but the images are not of good quality. You can also look for the album with Chet Atkins and another with Emmylou Harris. Really brilliant. I hope you receive this message, I send you a big hug and my thanks!
En su momento por la decada del 90 escuché que ivan hacer la gira mas larga del planeta 🌎 con miles y miles de show increíble dire Straits rompian todas las taquillas y llenaban estadios de fútbol por todo el mundo
They were a magnificent band and then the accountants got involved (as they do) and the music suffered, he had enough and pulled the plug, the music industry wanted money, Mark wanted music so the band ended because you could not replace M Knopfler. They left behind a portfolio a magic. and in in my sixties I still listen to and reminisce. OH, the happy days.
Thank you for reacting to one of my Dire Straits Favorites (along with 'My Parties' and 'You And Your Friend'); most people due 'Sultans of Swing' - one of their tap radio hits, and one that has nothing to do with Swing, I might add - or their signature number, 'Money For Nothing.' The 'On Every Street' album doesn't have a single bad track on it.
Your only reacting to Dire Straits commercial period, all the best compositions are on the the first two albums (Dire Straits 'the album" and Communique "the album") ? Your missing out !
I love your reactions! I tried to buy you a coffee and request a reaction, but it didn't work, that is why I paypaled you some money. Would you consider doing a reaction to a song/video the singer of Sabaton, Joakim, did with parody metal band Nanowar of Steel, called "Pasadena 1994"? It is about a different kind of battle, that was important for the Italians. I think Joakim had a lot of fun doing that. :D
Hey you guys consistently find good songs...this is an odd one that most don't find. People don't write songs like this anymore and it's a sad state of affairs how music is created and perceived now. I will say that most of their songs are better studio version...but to each his own. They did this one justice, it's just that Mark has a certain vocal range and it can be hard to hear what he's trying to get across live.
Truly one of the all-time great guitarists, and you're right about him being down to earth. Love your honest and heart-felt reactions. You might enjoy watching Mark talk about some of his favorite guitars: ua-cam.com/video/27OT_FSWrIE/v-deo.html
all this talk of alpha males these days getting testosterone making himself look amazing buying brand new cars this guy is the ultimate alpha male the way he sings this guy is in charge 100% of everybody thousands and thousands of people, but what makes him the alpha male is that he is winning every heart and speaking to people so perfectly ...... he is edifying
underrated an totally iconic album this.
can't believe I never heard this version and I'm obsessed with this band and this man
Well that "Trumpet" actually is a Soprano Saxophone ;-)
(love all your reactions
Yes, he never intended the group to get so big.
Dire straits are good for test your home audio.... I love this song
true
I agree
One of the most underrated Dire Straits songs and one of my favorites! The outro is a trip!
Such a wholesome song :)
Your smiles (and sometimes tears) say it all.
Hi guys, another brilliant choise, congratulations.
Mark is one of the greatest story tellers😊
Trapper man, and Cannibals... come to mind. Sweet stories amazing guitar work! 👍
The greatest for me. His friend Bob Dylan may have won the Nobel Prize for Literature but I honestly don't think he can hold a candle to Mark.
@@jjc5407 up there with Mr. Tom Waits😂😁😆😂😐
Another fantastic song from Dire Straits. The 1st half displays Mark's unique singing voice and the 2nd half is so uplifting with fantastic playing from Paul Franklin on the Pedal Steel Guitar.

"You and your friend" from the same concert please!
And same album
Hey there guys...actually it's a Soprano Saxophone.
I would've said clarinet too, a really fat one 😂
Another Dire Straits? You spoil me. ❤
By the way: You guys HAVE to watch the "Guitar Stories Mark Knopfler SkyArts1" documentary here at UA-cam! Just type it in! Its only 44:00 minutes. Yep, did watch it. Thanks for the tip. Really interesting to see Mark in a different setting other than performing 😊
❤❤❤❤ check it out Private investigations, same concert! On the night

Amazing song , great reaction.
Appreciating do the reaction for Brothers In Arms played by Mark Knopfler live in Berlin on 2007.
you should check out the rockpalast 1979 live concert! so you get to see them in the early days =)
I second this
They sounded so like the studio recordings back in those days it was amazing!
THANK YOU FOR "ON EVERY STREET". WHEN YOU BOTH GET CHANCE COULD YOU PLEASE PLAY BY (DIRE STRAITS) "RIDE ACROSS THE RIVER" MUCH OBLIGED

I know an accountant that said John illsley (bass player) made £8 million from this tour
Try another one following this one: You and your friend
Yes! The On The Night version like this one is a must.
Awesome reaction as usual!
As I mentioned in your last reaction, I think you missed out on "Where do you think you are going". I can recommend London Gramar, they have lots of great songs and her vocals are INSANE.
Paul Franklin on Steel guitar is the best steel guitar player on the planet too
Lo cierto es que a partir de ahora Diré Strais va a formar parte de vuestras vidas y que sean con salud
Please do some of Mark's solo work from later in his life. Even now in his 70s he is doing new stuff.
Magnificent, thank you both.
Hi guys
Wonderful reaction as ever. I think you would love a live performance with Emma Lou Harris of a song called Done With Bonepart. It's a much older Mark and a song from his solo catalogue. Take care!! Love your reactions!!!

It's an soprano saxophone
God i wish I could have been there !!!!
Back when they put this album out my mother had just passed away i was sure 💔 he wrote this song for me.
You must react to Planet of New Orleans which is on the same album.
It’s in the queue.
En su momento por la decada del 90 escuché que ivan hacer la gira mas larga del planeta 🌎 con miles y miles de show increíble dire Straits rompian todas las taquillas y llenaban estadios de fútbol por todo el mundo
The 90s now, the 80s and the 70s left behind ... but also the last Dire Straits song.
Looks like you love Dire Straights , i think a lot do such a great band
You both seem to like guitars and slide guitars - you should try listening to Chris Rea I think you will like him.
There was a rumour Dire Straits were going to merge with Chris Rea and combine an element of each name... but no one wanted to talk about it! 😉
It is a Soprano Saxophone! 😊
That's a tenor saxophone played by Chris White
You your friend on The night,, show
Your only reacting to Dire Straits commercial period, all the best compositions are on the the first two albums (Dire Straits 'the album" and Communique "the album") ?
Your missing out !
That was beautifull when You compare HIM to David Gilmour!!!....To me, Mark and David Are 2. & 3. Best guitar players EVER!!!.......…1. Is Hendrix!!!
Mark forever❤
This is a great song and great solo with Phil Parmer wish you would do reaction to love over gold from alchemy live
Check out “Redbud Tree” and “Speedway at Nazareth” solo Knopfler
Mark said he wrapped up the band because the road crew became so big he didn't know who most of them were.
Mark on fame:
"Fame - not so much. I like being successful, I would recommend it to everyone."
psst..that is a soprano saxophone.
😊👍👍👍😊🥰♥️❣️
Ia it not a sax ??
Soprano sax , we were told 😊
Hey you guys consistently find good songs...this is an odd one that most don't find. People don't write songs like this anymore and it's a sad state of affairs how music is created and perceived now. I will say that most of their songs are better studio version...but to each his own. They did this one justice, it's just that Mark has a certain vocal range and it can be hard to hear what he's trying to get across live.
There were lots of songs like this 1989 to 1993. But not after that.
Truly one of the all-time great guitarists, and you're right about him being down to earth. Love your honest and heart-felt reactions. You might enjoy watching Mark talk about some of his favorite guitars: ua-cam.com/video/27OT_FSWrIE/v-deo.html
