Today we dive back into the story of the Drifters crew encountering creatures of Darkness on an planet of ice! Do they have any connection to tormentors? Likely not, but let’s discuss!
Maybe the tormentors are modified versions of those creatures like how the witness seemed to modify Rhulk and Callus and what were on the planet that the drifter witnessed are their natural form?
I definitely feel like Tormentors are the first we are going to see of the 5th darkness race. I'm assuming each individual member of the darkness race we will fight, are all different species from different planets that either wanted to follow the witness and believed in his message, or were forcefully corrupted by the darkness and used as pawns. However, I think its the former. The Witness doesn't seem to be someone who forces people to do things. He's more of someone that tricks people into following him, or tries to sway people into believing and siding with him on what he believes the universe should be.
Hopefully, a little of both. I would like to see the Taken Tai Emperor Raven who was the empress of the Taishibethi species, before the Golden Amputation and Oryx turning her into "the perfect Raven" .
There are no races of darkness, every race is born from light as they have life. Those other things seem like something created or left over from a previous reset. This isn't the first time this game has been played, it's been done an infinite amount of time according to the lore cards, so long the Gardener has gotten tired of the same outcome. You can see that the Tormentors are not a race, they are designed beings from those light suppressing animals from that one planet. It's weird they don't mention which planet because to me it sounds similar to Neptune, which is a literally ice ball of a planet. Well it had to be in the closest Galaxy which is Andromeda. The Witness indeed forces others to follow it or die. You must be confusing this lore with something else. They literally gave you the reason the Hive are like this because of a lie. Which part did you think was their own free choice here, it was engineered to steer them toward becoming enslaved to hunger. The Witness is a hot PoS and that's why Savathun tried to screw with it's plan. Your really need to pay attention to the lore more. Rhulk took the worm mother and dissected her to find out how it worked and thus genetically altered it to force it to feed on light, guess what her children have to do?! Yeah, more the Krill(Hive people), were told lies to force then to seek out salvation in the deep. Wtf, you mean the Witness doesn't force you? Seems like that was forced to the point out set up a whole plan involving multiple races just to do it. 🤔🤷 Witness didn't trick anyone, it literally closed all avenues out leaving you just one or death.
I like to think of the witness as the devil of sorts. The witness speaks to true desires people have and on the way the people become corrupted. The witness uses their own weaknesses against them and 'helps' them achieve their goal but in doing so helps the darkness achieve its own end.
I wonder if there is a lore reason why the pyramid ships don't use these types of units in battle. It seems the witness hasn't been using its full power at all ever since it arrived in the system, only using proxies, not its own forces. Maybe like the traveler the witness is weakened as well.
That’s a pretty good idea. Much more comforting than my assumption that the Witness is using up the local forces that have sworn themselves to it, before it decides to actually step into ring itself.
From the lore you can tell those things are naturally formed in the first place. I'm wondering how they'll explain those light suppressing beasts. They lived on a planet where it's frozen basically, how did they survive there if they are a lifeform? They'd need something to sustain life. Living off light is impossible as that is a perverted form of life that was due to what Rhulk experimented with. I think Tormentors are a natural progression of that. My mind wanders to the 9, who seem to be outliers here. The 9 are sentient but are formless, so could those Tormentors be bodies created for them? 🤔 They did make a pact with the Darkness and I'm guessing the antimatter properties of their existence applied to something from reality could be partly used to explain those beasts. Lots of loose ends that Bungie needs to wrap up here, Darkness has spoken to a lot of beings and we got some weird stuff happening in the next big update. So who's cards are going to get revealed? The Witness has nothing on the Traveller, it is not the Darkness itself. The Traveler cannot be killed, the point of the game is to end all existence. If everything dies that's it, the Gardener loses. You cannot kill the laws that govern the universe, that's absurd. The characters in Destiny apply they're logic to the Traveler, which doesn't make sense. Why would a being that never eats get tired? Human logic is pointless to use when describing the states of the Traveler. We don't know what it's actually doing, but it being weak is just assumptions by the characters in the story. Why? All those ghosts are part of the Traveler and everyone who was resurrected is powered by light given by the Traveler, if it was weakened, those dudes would not have power at all. The Red War showed up that the light can be cut off from us, but it was never stopped as Ghaul was channeling it to himself. Most we can infer is just vessel the Traveler uses can be damaged but it can also be repaired, question why didn't it take back the shard it discarded in Europe? What's nuts is the power from that shard still contains light and it's corrupted, but that's basically Darkness. I think we're going to find out the Traveler and Darkness are one in the same.
My thought: these creatures are described as Light-suppressing. That means they can negate paracausal energy. We'll have to see, but I'd assume these creatures could also suppress darkness subclasses. If this turns out to be the case, that means they're also Darkness-suppressing. If this is true, what we have is a paracausal creature that can negate both Light and Dark. This may make The Witness reluctant to use them. The Witness utilizes The Darkness. If these things can suppress both Light and Dark, that means they can suppress its power, which may make it reluctant to deploy them.
Maybe the theory that Rasputin and Elsie made is that the reason the witness didn't invade was because of savathun and her death opened up the means to invade
I had the theory that what they found was actually “primal darkness”… darkness not corrupted by the witness. Then the drifter kept the primal darkness like a pet and found out how to mold it. The motes we collect in gambit is corrupted darkness and the bank actually refines it back into primal darkness. The primal boss at the end of gambit is just a controlled formed of that darkness and not really a taken. The creature behind the drifter is raw darkness
When I first heard this back when it came out I thought it was an early taken encounter like a thral or knight but the feelings/scanners threw this off. It being a darkness thing like a tormentor makes more sense and maybe we’ll see more enemies like them in the dlc that better matches the creatures description.
Love it but uhh your forgetting some lightfall dialogue that states tormentors are a fusion of caluses army cloning procedure and the witnesses finest deciple baseline (Nezarec).
Animation made it fun to follow along! Keep them coming no matter how jank they look lmao 🤣it took me so long to realize that the main dude was the Drifter lol
In time each new ability we discover will become a tool whose purpose is understood. Currently we don’t understand the purpose behind the light and the darkness. Or the difference between them(if there really are any) All we know is the light and darkness utilize “paracausal” powers in different ways. And that difference scares us. The darkness wants to change our way of life in the universe. The light wants to help us grow. To truly become beings of paracausalality we need to embrace the idea that light casts shadows and some creatures rely on those shadows because the light is too bright for them. Neither is intrinsically good or evil. It’s how they’re used.
Tbh i think they are a proto tormentors. Like how the darkness evolves its minions like the hive now the cabal the scorn and even rhulk. These are what the tormentors where before the witness upgraded them
So does anyone else notice some strange similarities between Rhulk and the tormentors? Both have a similar style to their flesh, almost stringy with the same shade of red, and as you can see on the Tormentors shoulders, they have a glowing yellow light beneath, quite like Rhulk's weakspots??
Not to mention their staff's/scythe's being a similar weapon type to Rhulk's glaive. Rhulk destroyed Lubrae but is there any mention as to what happened to the Lubraen people? If not then I wonder what might've become of them...
It's interesting how he describes what the creature is sealed in. It reminds me of how Rhulk and Witness have some beings trapped on the ships for display. And he mentions they don't have heads. They could be what the Witness turned into Tormentors. Just amplifying their anti-light abilities and making them physically stronger.
You can’t destroy a Time Machine once it’s been built, you can only remove the access point to your timeline going forward (from the day of destruction)
Like how thrall when tortured with light become those hulking ogres, Maybe some method is used in to make a similar transformation that become the tormentors
Idk about tormentors specifically but I’ve always thought of the things he described as similar but more like slithering black clouds and tendrils. Very likely similar in (core) physiology tho.
I was wondering if these creatures would ever pop up in the main story. I had also wondered if the VOW creatures encapsulated in crystal were these creatures because they didn't exactly look like Scorn
We do know that some sort of darkness creature exists, smelling of wet dirt and making ungodly metallic noises, we know that fenchurch noted that revision zero, a weapon made from alien tech, tech which was in our solar system pre golden age, smelled of petrichor, or in other words, wet dirt, so if the tormentors make some sort of ever bending metallic sound or however the black Armory book describes it as, or it smells of petrichor, we can at least surmise that the tormentors were there on earth during the collapse, we also know that some sort of unknown creature was on the eliksni homeworld during their collapse.
I mean they fact they were described as headless and like nothing they had ever seen before pretty much tells me they are the tormentors, they specifically said they were not hive.
Thanks for this. I started playing Destiny 2 a little over a year ago so I do know a lot of the back story but I still have plenty of missing information that I would love to catch up on.
From what ive noticed is that the tormenters are synthetic, their skin is synthetic and plus their helmets are their heads. They look like really fucked up and tortured psions. Think about it, psions jump really high just like them and also they didnt appear until lightfall (yes rhulk was a sort of tormenter but this is my theory) when psions shoot a grenade at you, its a grenade made of void energy that lifts you in the air and weve seen how big psions can get. Plus they are similarly shaped liked psions and they sort of sound similar and we already know fhe darkness corrupts and twists people or creatures into monsters and since the witness made them or bred them and plus once they die they have branches/thorns sprout out of them. I think they are big psions tortured by the witness.
Maybe they're like very early stages of what the tormentors are going to be? You mentioned how they slither, maybe they were like a tadpole thing and turn into a hideous weird frog thing almost(tormentors) 😂
Maybe this planet is what we see in the Seraph bunker Sol System map past Neptune and past the unlit barrier. If that's the case it is possible that this place was known to Rasputin and Bray. Seeing in this season how Clovis wanted to eliminate the traveler I wonder if the harvesting of these light suppressing creatures was some sort of contingency plan for that... Which still leaves the question as to how those creatures got there in the first place. The fact technology caged them seems to indicate a possible human origin as the Hive for example are more biological in nature and the fallen and Cabal hadn't gotten to Sol yet.

Here's something that sounds wild: what if Tormentors are actually modified, incredibly powerful clones of Rhulk or even mutants that consist of Rhulk's DMA and so many others? The Witness MUST have an army and the Shadow Legion are the latest addition to the roster, but besides the new Torment, there must be other foot soldiers that make up the army behind the Pyramid Fleet. Also, the planet that Calus' loyalists found to contain tge egregore plants that allowed them to bend the will of Scorn to Calus and become instruments to directly commune with the Witness could also be the Tormentors home planet too but we don't know for sure. Hope we get lots of them in the campaign, Neomuna patrol space and more later in the seasons of Lightfall to give us more lore that could link to what The Witnesses other forces could be like.
Today we dive back into the story of the Drifters crew encountering creatures of Darkness on an planet of ice! Do they have any connection to tormentors? Likely not, but let’s discuss!
I love how the Drifter's character model for this video kind of looks like Post Malone 😄
The way the creature killed 1 guardian in his sleep really fits with the name tormentor
Could have been a planet covered in stasis
Wait... what if the tormentors are actually the Aphilion? 🤔
Love the use of animation.... drifter flipping the bird = priceless!
Maybe the tormentors are modified versions of those creatures like how the witness seemed to modify Rhulk and Callus and what were on the planet that the drifter witnessed are their natural form?
Thats what i think
I thought tormentors were created with the clone tech calus had and the remains of nezerac

The tree looking thing on drifter's ship is confirmed to be egregore. They confirmed it in the lore back in the season of the haunted.

The lack of bandana really made him look like someone else, like glasses to a normally nerdy person.

Rhulk blew up his planet and tormentors are distinctively soilders of the witness
I would rather not have the horrendous animation.
SUUPER disappointed there's no real lore on the tormentors. Smh
Worse than gambit? Impossible 😂
