What other do you wish USB mics for streamers included?
What other what? 🤣
yes
I guess he meant what other features... probably mic filters integrated into the software tbh
can we get ownd dot tv
I agree. Completely. Usb much wow.
This thumbnail wins the internet 🤣
Yep I can agree
100%!!
YES. This is exactly what I want to see. Releasing software for existing mics makes me so excited!
A jump-scare is not usually what comes to mind when you see one's wife/girlfriend emerge from under the desk. 😄
I bought the Rode mic about a month or so ago after having my older cheap mic crap out on me. I honestly love the hell out of this thing. It works perfectly fine for discord and I just applied filters directly in streamlabs so it sounds perfect on stream. Honestly, it's the best I've ever sounded.
But I don't have much to compare it to, so your mileage may vary.
I got here a lot earlier than normal. I am glad you mentioned that you need head phones to hear the difference. As I was wondering if my hearing was really that bad.
@Patriot Nation TV brother...just get out of here. This is not cool. Do better content instead. How about that?
This is the most helpful channel for streaming start-ups, in my opinion. Becoming a bigger fan with every video I watch. Super useful info, every time.
I really love the mini, but the only downside is that it’s so “mini” sometimes it’s hard to position close enough for the best sound.
the Podmic suits you better. It also looks better than the Mini..😎😁
I just hold it in my palm like an apple
Really wish elgato would add at LEAST a noise gate for the wave...that mic pics up EVERYTHING...but I love it so much other than that. They tweeted it was on their roadmap 8 months ago, but nothing since.
If youre using OBS, just add it there. Youll also have control of how hard or soft you want it
@@Artbug this doesn't work if you want to use the wavelink (virtual mixer) software (which lets be honest is WHY you buy a wave). Your entire mix is one source in OBS. If I added a noise gate, it would also be gating soft game sounds, etc. If I add the mic into OBS on its own and gate it, I can't use it in the mixer. We NEED a noise gate filter in app.
@@PastelSpellTV Mute the mic in the wave link app then add the mic separately into OBS. It's what I did so that I could use filters for the mic.
It'll still allow you to use wave link for everything else just not the mic.
@@FaithZe yeah but then you cant monitor your overall audio balance. I'm aware there's workarounds - none of them are good, and defeat the purpose of the mic. Adding a noise gate to the software should be higher on elgatos priority list, and it's been on their roadmap for a long time, so why don't we have it yet?
I got the Rode NT USB normal version and I'm very happy with it :)
Can I use the new software with the normal one too?
@@ZeDarkLord how did you know? Official info says the opposite
What do you mean? Its just a top cover to determine the mic based on color. Nothing is new
@@ZeDarkLord it's currently only compatible with the NT-USB Mini.
do you know if the software works with other usb mics too?
Great video and I very much agree with your conclusion.
I noticed two things, though:
I think you're forgetting the Elgato Wave's ClipGuard, which can replace a compressor for a lot of streamers and having it built-into the hardware at this price point is at least a little special.
And when I googled what the Exciter and Big Bottom things to, I found out that they are not EQ. Neither boosts it's targeted frequencies like an EQ would, they add harmonics to them. Which is probably one of the reasons they are so subtle.
The sound issue likely is the noise gate. It feels like a hysteresis problem, which is why it'd be nice to have controls!
It’s the noise gate. I’ve had this issue with my Rodecaster Pro since day 1. After many calls with Rode they basically said that’s just how it operates and that noise gate can sometimes conflict with the limiter or other settings. I was very disappointed in the noise gate feature and the fact that over the years it hasn’t been fixed.
So I made a post on Twitter about the and @ HyperX saying that I hope they are working on something, and they actually responded asking for what features we would like to see. That tells me that they are working on something. Hopefully soon they will bring something out, cause I actually think HyperX is the best looking mic and the sound is on par with the other usb mics if not better.
I love your mic reviews. They're incredibly thorough. Much appreciated.
I bought it almost 5 months ago and it works like a charm! It's super clear and it has a decent pop filter built-in.
It's been working flawlessly with the ERA 5 bundle that I started using.
I just love having physical faders though. Software is great, but if you want to change shit up on the fly while streaming or gaming, it's so much easier and more intuitive to use an actual physical fader than to tab out and tinker with the mouse. Would be great if Elgato could release that. Actual faders with virtual audio cables/routing built in, so you can buy it separately to the Wave, but also that ties in with Wave Link
As always Thank you for your non bias, professional evaluation of these products. Much love man. ✌
For me personally it seems like the Rode mic sounded flatter and muffled, while te Elgato sounded clear and bright so it would be my first choice
I bought the Wave 3 because of you.
Same haha
And now you'll have to buy the Rode NT USB Mini!
@@cumsonyou6917 not in the slightest. The wave 3 has everything I need. But the Rode mini is cool.
I use voicemeeter banana for multi virtual input software (donationware) and it does everything these softwares do, but the learning curve is sooo high it took me years to get it right. Rode seems to have the same functionality on a "no-brainer" learning curve. Its very impressive.
I bought an elgato wave 3 more or less off of your review of it and that software is one of the best pieces of software I've used in a long time. I use it constantly even when I'm not streaming to control music while I'm gaming or to easier control discord volume. It's awesome
Turning on the Big Bottom always turns on the Exciter
Harris' lady was under his table. MMM--MMM--MMM! Don't play it off, Harris! Don't play it of, 'playah'!! (LOL)
I think you're right. Sub mixes are vital for stream quality
the "weeeeeeeeeeee" at 0:40 got me.
likewise lmfao
After a decade of cheap mics I finally bought the regular Rode NT USB mic years ago and I love the sound quality. It's been a great mic for vocal recording or recording my own samples. And with a simple noise gate in OBS for streaming I've never been happier. I think the only thing I would have done differently is gone with the XLR version. One of my favorite things on mics like this one is the ability to hear myself with the fader knob that changes the mix that gets sent to the headphones, and not have to do it with software so there's no latency. Which from what I can see is missing from the NT Mini. Can just turn a knob and hear what's going on in the other room or more easily hear someone knocking without having to take off my headphones mid-game.
I just got a Wave 3 after using a Rode NT Mini for a few months or so. Decided to change when the usb port on the Rode went ping, turns out it's soldered in a way that allowed it to break when lightly moving the mic. It's also wired in a way that makes it almsot impossible to solder-repair it.
Saw your video on the Wave 3 and was convinced. Even with the software update from Rode... I have no regrets swapping over.
..Still using the old Rode NT as a backup XD
Before anyone buys anything technical PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH. Harris does a great job of showing how the microphone is *supposed to work* but there can always be common problems with products that are not deliberate.
Not to say this USB microphone has problems, but I have had an unusable Rode microphone due to a lack of RF shielding
Lol Harris animorphed into Phillip Defranco there at the end for a bit
You still have the link to your twitch in the description instead of your UA-cam channel
Lol
So when I was hearing with my headphones, it felt like the Wave had more of a clearer sound while the Rode NT had a more dry(?) sound. I don't use USB mic's but that's what I heard.
Awesome review Harris! You always bring a great unbiased, and No B.S. point of view. A humble thank you, and appreciation me Senpai! I hope the guys and girls at TC Helicon are notes because ALL of the quality-of-life features mentioned for these two USB mics can easily be implemented for GoXLRs. Imagine having control of stream, and headphone audio on an app. Now, imagine a second option to route the same capabilities to a GoXLR mini if you want to control the audio via hardware. TC Helicon, you're missing out on a golden opportunity to kill it in the streaming industry.
I was about to say it sounds too high pitch with the rode but th "big bottom" makes the voice deeper and warmer
Literally LOL'd at the "Do you just hate my face". Wasnt expecting that :)
I was thinking for podcasts too as soon as the 4 colored inputs and XLR tags showed up.
I’ve been using the rode nt usb for a couple years now, and honestly it’s the best mic for me. I don’t think any mic will make me sound as good.
I still prefer my Hyperx Quadcast. It lights up red! lol
I have it too, it’s nice
NT-USB Mini is so damn good.
Also the heck was Kenzie doing under the desk there Harris? This is a family friendly channel Harris
"turn on the big bottom" "turn on the exciter" I see you Rode.
You made my comment before me, and better. Touche
Voicemeeter + touchportal is my way to go no matter what Mic
You gave me quite a shock! Just ordered the Wave 3 after rewatching a couple of your videos and it would have been really annoying if your recommendations changed just now😅🙈
And even if..nothing wrong with the Wave 3!
It's absolutely fantastic, don't panick because a "UA-camr" changes his opinion. :)
@@HitokiriShin you‘re absolutely right!
@@HiJacky7500 Hope you will enjoy your mic, I also have a Wave 3 and I can confirm it's gorgeous.
Stay safe! :)
Hey Harris, there are soo many mic videos that you have covered here on the channel. I feel like we as the audience are missing the other end of mic and audio. The sound / listening. Is there any way that you could make a video on headsets? Which are the best for gaming and sound and the price points. I hope you see this. Much love man.
I have the Røde Podmic and absolutely love it for streaming. Just build quality and sound quality alone I would still choose the Røde mic
FWIW - I’ve owned the Wave 3 since day 1. There are known issues within the software that cause issues on some apps.
In discord for example, I sometimes get told my voice is “like a robot” by my teammates. The only fix is unplug and replug to where you miss all your audio until it resets.
The other small issue is to think if you sometimes use your system without the mic. For example, I may watch videos with my speakers. Well, the audio always defaults to those software inputs. You need to manually go change the output to your speakers
If you close a web browser after fixing, it will do it over again.
Some small things, but they add up
What happened to Elgatos promised update for voice effects and stuff lole that? Was very sad after I purchased that it never happened
My kind of thumbnail
Nice video and nice sounding mic.
@Steggy from @Elgato at 4:10 how awesome is that - thank you @Senpai for offset lock, it's great!
Honestly, I've had my Elgato Wave 1 for a month now and the software has caused so many more issues than it's fixed. I'm considering just paying for an xlr and external mixer now
Most important point! and you made it easy to buy a mic.
If they get that noise gate working properly, or just give you a simple threshold slider to adjust, this will be my #1 recommended USB microphone for anyone looking to get into streaming.
I have this mic and wouldn’t recommend it if you have a noise home. I also bought an mv7 and was much happier with it
What sort of noise are you talking about here? Kids? AC? Footsteps? I was looking at getting an MV7 but the Elgato software controls are very appealing...
@@DJOptimusFunk anything in the background will be picked up. Mv7 is dynamic so it has better noise reduction. Rode mini is cheaper but is a condenser and will pick up everything
So the Elgato Wave mic's big rival is a mic called the Rodent.
Nice.
GoXLR + OBS most certainly can make your teammates louder. If you make it a point to keep your faders in OBS at around 50% you have plenty of headroom to adjust your mix to stream.
good job harris as always
That Rode connect app on your computer is pretty slick!
I've had this mic for a year or so now and use a lot for video calls working from home - it's really good (for my use case). After seeing this video I downloaded and tried the Rode Connect software. I discovered soon after that it broke the video function in the Windows Camera app. After I uninstalled Rode Connect it all worked fine again. Installing Rode Connect forced a firmware update on my mic, so I'm assuming I'm still getting some benefit there!? Love the show BTW Harris - great mix of info and entertainment.
I was concerned for a second as I am gearing up to start streaming and my Wave3 just showed up with the pop filter and shock mount attachments. I was going to be upset if I should have gotten something else. I'm glad the W3 will be the better option for the functionality of streaming.
That "weeee" when you pulled in the rode mic was a nice little touch
I used the original NT-USB for years and just recently sold it to a friend when I went XLR. Kinda annoying the software doesn't work with that one as well, that would have been a great thing to upgrade the mic.
I am a podcaster with the hyper x quadcast and I love it. I got a boom arm and it works pretty good for me. I may give this a try though.
If you run your goxlr through your streaming pc like I do you can make most of your routing submixes a certain volume on obs and then use the faders to control the volume that way. Only downside is being able to mute the faders through the goxlr unless you do hotkeys. That way you can adjust the volume for your headphones and it be set on stream.. Especially if you do their asio plugin.
The RODE NUT
Harris, would love to see what you think of the PC Panel Mini and Pro audio controller and associated software. It's a way to give you hardware control for individual program volume, as well as OBS and Voicemeter support. Less than a quarter of the cost of the GoXLR for the Pro, and it can be used with USB and XLR Mics.
I think the PreSonus Revelator with the bundled software for that mic is also a competitor to either of these. Something to check out as well.
I love this mic option!!
Meanwhile the people with voicemeeter installed
-Neat
I haven't tried out Rode's new app yet, but I can tell you that using the RodeCaster Pro instead of the GoXLR was an easy choice for me because it allowed the option of doing Couch Co-op streams, multitrack recording, and easy control when we do DnD actual Plays. Hopefully they recognize the need for the updates to the software and get it on par with Elgato's but for now I'll use the RodeCaster with the Elgato Software and my Stream deck, and keep an eye on Rode's updates.
Anyone else notice something different with the video quality?
(Yes I have it on 1080p on my usual 4k display, it's literally the video/camera being used)
8:48 - wearing my $200 studio headphones. yes I hear a difference. I'll need to go watch another review of this mic, but I really like my Rode physical mixer with the big bottom/exciter, so I'm very keen to see if this works just as well.
since you can use the WaveLink software with most mics, and the NT USB Mini is cheaper than the Wave 3. It makes sense to just get the NT USB Mini and use it with the WaveLink software. best of both worlds then, affordable good usb mic + good software
You know what pal? Overall genuinely pleased with my wave mic 3.
What I'm most dissatisfied with, is that lack of promised updates. Such as, compressor, noise gate etc.
Whilst I 100% understand you can do it. (Via "3rd party software".
I got a wave 1 and I'm seeing how the rode compares to it😬
So Voicemeeter, but not terrible. Cool!
What makes Voicemeeter terrible tho?
Hello all.
I'm looking to start recording videos with commentary I hate the look of the blue yeti snowball mic.
I do want to live stream but it isn't my thing just yet.
Please thank you guys.
Elgato Wave 1 seems like a good mic with the software it has so it looks promising to me compared to wanting to get the HyperX
I use the reverse. All audio through speakers and chat (if needed) through a cheap aux headphone with goxlr. Route all sounds through my speakers and only chat through headphones. You can easily adjust chat sound with a sound meter. It’s not that hard. I hate streaming with headphones on so yeah. Best way to go about chat audio issues
This feels like they are making a gateway for people just getting interested in Podcasting, and whetting their appetite before they plunk down the cash for a Rodecaster Pro with all the fixings.
this is litterally the mic I just bought :D
you talk about the elgato wave link "lock" feature. has anyone else had a problem with the lock becoming unlocked when you use the stream deck to adjust it for the first time each day??
When toggling either (or both) big bottom / exciter on, the volume seems to cut out for a portion of the sound; as if you were moving away from the mic, plus it happens frequently, not just following a toggle.
it was maddening to hear.
Now for Elgato to update their wave software to do the same things.
right when i wanted to go buy the wave 1 he drops this, got scared real quick xDDD.
Needed to watch this asap
OWN3D, we missed you..
Heads up, the link isn't working on your sponsor link.
Nice videos. You have been giving good advice for setting up Twitch. Some of them have been helping me learn more about how to use lighting, audio, and recording.
To be fair as far as i can tell all these extra things do now is add ease of use. If you are willing to spend some time learning your gear and learning obs and a few choice plugins you can do everything so easily. Virtual audio cables plus the audio monitor plugin for obs does basically the same thing as the elgato wave software (apart from the ratio lock) and you can put all your eq stuff in obs anyway and have way more control than the few options in the rode app. I know some people find ease of use to be worth more than customisation but I am not one of this people. To me even if I had an elgato wave i would probably not use the software because my audio monitor plugin setup lets me do the same thing from inside obs, and i dont have the extra controls for things i dont need a sub mix for like my mic
Seems the volume fluctuations were due to the noise gate. Maybe too sensitive of a baked in setting? Appears to cut out when you moved further away or turned away from the mic.
I like the wave 3 but it’s so sensitive. It picks up an ant peeing in another city when I record.
Like the idea of it. Haven't been too happy with the Elgato unfortunately
I’ve had this mic for 6 months and had no idea they came out with software for it
I know it is a *very* niche market, but I would love to see someone produce that software for Linux. I should be able to do much of the audio routing and sub-mixing with existing tools, but they can be complicated. It also doesn't solve the problem with external mic control (like the LED lights) and such. But with more and more games running on Linux, and stability getting better and better every day, there's a huge amount of potential. Plus, I'm selfish as a Linux user; I love my outboard analog audio gear, but having a simple and portable solution would be super-nice.
that mic's real funky lookin'
Amazing review thank you really helped me in my research
Hey man, you got noice gate and compression and gain in elgato software too.
Recommend the VB-Audio VoiceMeeter Potato software for 3+ virtual input outputs sub mix features, multi track record. I think it helps almost any quality mic sound great.
Nah, love your face Harris.
Although RODE might not be competing with Elgado, Elgado might be (or will be) competing with RODE. Rumor is Elgado is working on adding various features specifically for podcasters.
I always wanted to have something like the submix feature but to everyone who whants that and don't want's to buy a new Mic just use Voicemeeter, its a litte complicated at first but when u understand it u got the same features and a little bit more for free :)
Who could hate that face? that's a good face
