    The best starting class for a newbie is arcanist. It gives you a dps class to play through the campaign with, which saves the hassle of trying to level up a dps with those horrid dungeon queues. It gives you access to a healer so you can get those nearly instant dungeon queues to level and for the story. And as a summoner it gives you a tank pet which will make the story missions easier. And by the time you hit 60 you've gotten to see things from the healer side and dps side so you've got a better idea of how the game works.

    Good Vid.
    With starting out,
    I think Pugilist is one of the more engaging/exciting melee to learn early on, but harder. I would say start out with Lancer (for sake of ease) if interested in melee, but since that class is boring until leveled to their late 30s (when they unlock Disembowel---and a Dragoon by that point)...I can see why one would start with Pugilist or Rogue instead.
    Gladiator has an easier time staying alive in early lvls and does have the defensive tools, but they may struggle keeping monsters away from others in the party.

    I got the Demo for FFXIV, and I really like it. I went Conjurer because I love support classes, as I have good game sense imo, I can always improve so that is why I really like this class. This is also my first MMORPG and im really excited to buy it (I'm getting to Demo Level Cap and then I'll buy the Realm Reborn for like $15, or the new one for $40. • @Kishuy
    @Kishuy 7 років тому +17

    i think the best starting class is arcanist for the following reasons:
    it is very easy to solo with
    provides more options in terms of future role
    is more forgiving on mistakes.
    the reason i totally disagreed with thaumateur in this video is because of survivability and mana management. more often than not a newbie will die because he has no heal or mitigation, doesnt know how to transpose at lower levels and run out of mana using fire, is not used to balance moving with very long cast time, cannot deal with more than 1 monster apart or, and you wont believe how often this happens, wont deal enough damage because is afraid of losing mana and will only cast blizzard.
    i believe that if you want to work toward black mage you should go with arcanist which will provide you with a heal to cross class or with archer who can run around to his heart content

    • @0Fyrebrand0
      @0Fyrebrand0 7 років тому +5

      I absolutely agree, Arcanist -- especially in the early game -- is an amazingly versatile and powerful class, and extremely fun to play. It's really unique, as well, because when you get into dungeons (before level 30 where Jobs take over everything) you can really back up your party if things go bad. An Arcanist can basically be a fully effective DPS, healer, and tank, all rolled into one. Some of my favourite Duty Finder memories are playing Arcanist at low level, and having to take over other people's roles for them if they drop and saving the day.

    If you're a beginner heed my warning; dps queue times will significantly slow down your leveling, so play a tank or healer first!! Then, once you've unlocked all of the leveling dungeons on your tank or healer, you can then choose a dps to level up much faster through the daily leveling roulette bonus.

    hey nice video!
    i started playing 10 days ago and have chosen archer. I was always a fan of ranging.
    so my advanced class is eventually going to be bard. what does that actually mean? does that mean that I can also train other classes and also be something else? or is my character permanently archer/bard primarily? if I don't want to do other classes, what do you suggest on spending time besides training range? I was thinking on making other skills, based on logs... Making quests of course... and online parties....
    thanks for informations and suggestions everyone :)

    Good vid I would have to say I pref the Marauder over the Gladiator as a starter tank, because Over Power seems generate more hate than Flash pre level 20

  • @nogitsune4452
    @nogitsune4452 7 років тому +8

    I actually found marauders the better tank to learn with. You get a stronger AoE pretty early that will hold agro better than the gladiator/paladin flash for a good bit of the early game, plus warriors have a strong melee DPS stance they can get in expansion content, not to mention a cooler limit break rank 3 imo.

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 7 років тому

      Until you get Fell Cleave, Sword Oath is a stronger dps stance (in fact, by itself, Sword Oath is the *strongest* DPS stance in the game, it is the extra dps skills of the warrior that makes deliverance stronger in later levels)

    • @lynbot2377
      @lynbot2377 7 років тому

      How is Sword Oath stronger than Dark Side?

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 7 років тому

      Lyn Hanamura By itself, it does much more damage. Don't underestimate the power of the autoattacks. Specially when the PLD is consistently, and after the buffs are applied, the second to third fastest auto attacker in the game. Yes, half the time his auto attacks are faster than those of the Ninja with huton or the Monk in Greased Lightning 3 (just one or the other in any given patch, though, he never is the fastest)
      Also, add Fight or Flight. It may not be Berserk, but a 30% extra damage for 30 secs every 90 secs is pretty powerful. Traited Blood for Blood is is actually weaker (it last 20 secs and its cd is 80) and it comes with the cost of extra damage received.

  • @doomblackdragon

    The game has changed a lot in Stormblood. As they remove the tp and mp restore songs from bard. Instead this is a cross class spell you have to spec into. Melee dps also get cross class spells to boost another players tp. All dps now have some support ability they can choose to use. Bard and Mechanics is more dps now with some support ability. Their support is giving everyone more damage. Also you could also say gladiator is a support class/tank. As it brings a ton of utility for the group.

    almost perfect video. To be perfect, though, you should tell everyone that a player can pick one or more (up to all) classes/jobs in the game and mix some skills between them to input more damage and/or effects. (To master a job you HAVE to do that).
    And for begginers I recommend Marauder instead Glad. The reason is simple: damage input is better in earlier lvs. Glad is more defensive, but lacks in damage in low lv. In the end the two are almost equal in creating enmity, though...
    But, in general, almost a perfect video xD

    • @Eorzat
      @Eorzat 7 років тому +2

      The problem is that for a beginner learning how to tank, it's vital that they learn tanking first, then DPS. Same for healer. WAR/MAR is good when you get used to tanking in general, but, for beginners, it might be a little bit overwhelming since you're expected to both tank and DPS. PLD/GLD, however, is much more straightforward in learning tanking fundamentals, plus Provoke is pretty much required to have on any tanking job/class anyways.

  • @lazyone1011

    I personally recommend going arcanist for your first class (specifically scholar). Healing REALLY helps to avoid having (and getting stuck with) tunnel vision. In later primal fights and raids, you'll have to check party list to see who has a specific ailment (prey, poison, ect.). You'll learn to do healing, dps, and mechanics at the same time. It may be a little difficult at first (didn't have much trouble personally) but it really gives you a grasp on the fundamentals needed for raids. Also, if you end up not liking scholar, summoner will be the same level as it, so you'll have a very fun dps job to use! :)

  • @mismismism
    @mismismism 7 років тому

    Yeah, out of what I've played(haven't tried Bard, Machinist or Astrologian) I feel like the trickiest ones for me are Summoner, Ninja and Dark Knight even though, ironically, those are my favorite classes so far but it is a lot of micromanaging and a lot of different things to stay aware of and react to.

    Okay to the
    first choice: It rly is the easiest Tank, but if u have no idea what a Tank has to do, the pls dont pick that class!
    2nd: Thats rly true, the WHM is the easiest and most classic one to play.
    3rd: The MNK is the hardest Melee class to play and master, its totally not for noobs to play with. Every single attack has a special direction to it and u HAVE TO keep up Greased Lightning all the time, with keeping all ur MNK DoTs up and without getting TP issues. The Dragoon is much easier to learn! So thats totally wrong here...
    4th: Well, it is easy until level 50, but after that u have to keep up 2 buffs and many ppl can't handle that at all. Many use only Ice so they won't loose their mana.
    5th: I can't count how many BRDs dunno how to play there class XD They don't know that they loose DPS while using Mana and Tp song, they don't know how to do DMG with him.... Its not easy XD

    Thamriyell What would you say is the most difficult class to master or play in the game thus far? I have been told Monk and Ninja tend to be fairly challenging to master as you are a melee DPS and have to focus on several things. I would love to hear your opinion on the topic.

    • @Akidryt
      @Akidryt 7 років тому

      Having played Ninja since release I can assure you: He is probably the easiest, after Monk. He has less positional attacks than monk, a few supportive abilities which are very clear when you need to use them and ninjutsu which again are very clear when to use which.
      Ninja is no rocket science. He's god damn plain and simple. The only thing you might want to have a look at is your huton buff when you are a new Ninja.
      Dragoon is since Heavensward def. the hardet Melee to master.

  • @ExireHG
    @ExireHG 7 років тому

    I'd say if you want to take it slow for understanding absolute basics, Dragoon for DPS, Paladin for Tank, and White Mage for Heal. If you've played at least one or two MMO's before, pick anything you want since chances are, you can handle it just fine. Ninja is a decent go between I think, not as positional as Monk but still some, a few DoT's but not as heavy as Summoner, Ninjitsu offers medium to long range attacks, plus a few support abilities for a party at later levels.

    After thinking over what classes I would recommend, I am pleased to see four of my five were recommended. Specifically -- Gladiator, Archer, Thaumaturge, and Conjurer. While definitely not classes that are weak, I also feel that they're styles and technique are easier to get accustomed to and do reward people who are just getting started. Other classes are also good and viable, but may have more complex rotations that make for a steeper learning curve.
    That said, I feel that Pugilist's learning curve is a bit higher than the other melee dps classes. While I do indeed find it rewarding--and the cross-class skills are some of the most used if you roll melee--the stance system and getting used to the stances takes some getting used to. Rewarding? Oh heck yes. A good class? Mmm, I love me some MNK. But for a starter...? Mmm... there may be others to get acquainted with that are better for new players.
    Me, personally, I would suggest Lancer for two reasons. One, its available right at the start for people who are getting into the game (Rogue requires that you find them first), and two is that their rotation offers a good starter on how combos work in the game. As they progress, the use of off-global cooldown skills also becomes more important and introduces the weaving of buffs and skills on top of the weaponskills that are on the global cooldown.

    • @argentbast

      --not to mention Blood For Blood and Invigorate, which pretty much all melee classes will want to use. :)

    I've played every class, and I feel like pugilist is one of the hardest for me to master for some reason. Having to change positioning and remembering which move needs to be done from where while the boss is moving around is something i struggle with. And I have no problem with machinist. Maybe it just doesn't click for me.

  • @RyuukySaotomi
    @RyuukySaotomi 6 років тому

    I would like to add
    Dark Knight is not available early game as it is at level 30.
    Black Mage is almost there depending if you like timing between fire and Ice.
    Arcanist is nice when your.summoned pet is not dead.
    Archier is distance, and I hope you love moving and boosting.
    Conjure can be nice if you get others to join. Aka social butterfly.
    In the long run have fun, and learn to grow. Only then will you learn to be a master.

    Cleric Stance is a toggle'd buff, not a timed one and there is another healer class you can choose. Arcanist! And I think its the better one for beginners. Especially lvl30+ when Arcanist can become Scholar and has a pet to assist with healing (not going into detail here). Plus you can always choose to become Summoner as well. Not an easy job rotation wise, but still always an option cause you level the class not the job. Means if you are a lvl40 Arcanist (Class) you are also a lvl40 Scholar (Job) and a lvl40 Summoner (Job).
    Nevertheless, you need to level many classes anyway as there are a lot of cross-class skills. Like the conjurer's Cleric Stance skill for all other healer classes or their Stoneskin which can be used by Gladiator / Paladin as well (yea I know Stoneskin got nerfed).
    So my reommendation is: Just give every class a try. Till ~lvl30 (which is relatively fast to achieve) you'll get a hunch a what the class/job plays out later. And that way you learn a lot of cross-class skills you will need anyway later in the game for your preferd class/job
    The last 3 jobs meantioned here: These have no classes, meaning they are job only (I do not implicate they are bad, they are quite cool). The downside on these however is that you start them at lvl30 (and you need Heavensward addon for these). That takes away the learning process a bit that you have with other classes/jobs, bombarding you with a lot of skills at once, which makes it a bit harder to level up these jobs in the beginning.
    One tip: Try to level in Palace of the Dead. Not only you start with lvl1 (on Floor 1) every time - which is actually good for learning the skills one by one again - you also need absolute no gear beside your weapon (just to determine your class/job). So it can save some gil, cause you do not need to buy new gear everytime you gained +5 to 10 levels or if you are just trying out a new class/job.
    (For usual dungeons you should have appropiate gear thou)

    I would have put Arcanist => SMN instead of BLM though. The Carbuncle and then Titan Egi makes most of the solo content / quests / PoTD / Fate bosses extremely easy to get done when you begin. Heck you can even solo T7 with SMN. On the other side even though BLM has a fairly easier rotation pre-60 it becomes much harder to sustain good dps in high mobility fights later on. I see a lot of BLMs hitting 60 and then jumping into Seph EX unable to do more than 600 dps. They had it easy before but good luck getting in end game after the first 2 weeks of leveling.
    Id say carbie/SMN gives you an edge for any or even all kind of content pre-60, it makes it for the relative complexity of its rotation vs BLM. (i started the game as BLM).
    Just look how they re comfortable with soloing hunt marks / PoTD at low level compared to any other dps jobs.
    excellent stuff as usual though!

      not even adding that arcanists get two excellent jobs for the price ofnone, with SCH being probably on of the best class around here, faster queues... even though it s a bit harder to master, the fairy makes healing very easy on low level dungeons.

      Easy classes? I'm offended! Jk jk
      Smn is def not an easy class when you hit 60, it's ridiculous how many bad smn's are out there not even reaplying their dots for 2 minutes. This job has one of the most insane openers I have ever seen, there is so much button smashing it's ridiculous, after that it's not so fast paced but to play this class well you never have 1 second to breath ( don't get me started on calculating your timers to extend the dots, so basically having to reaply them in a 3sec tick) . Also every summoner that puts their egi on sync is wasting so much dps. Good summoner = controlling their pet, reaplying dots, while moving around still casting ruin II, make use of swiftcast which is super important. And well if you can do all of that then yes you are playing this class right. If you just play smn with pet on sync and just using your 3 dots then sorry, that's just the minimum of the potential a smn has. Yes I had to vent a little bit, this class needs more love :(

      yeah that is always true altho i think what he was complaining about was the amount of button mashing it takes to do a decent job and that he may have forgotten that its not at all difficult to find macros for his skill combos

    I chose warrior as my first class, thinking it would be a great for melee dps with its big axe and... well, the big axe. I later learned I wasn't entirely wrong, minus the fact that warriors are not actually a dps role, much to my dismay. Still, it's a very satisfying experience to be able to take hits to the face and live, and survive any hit a paladin can take while still dishing out good damage.

    The one thing I wished was that they made the gameplay more interesting sub lvl 30. I've just finished unlocking all the jobs in the game and they all suffer from this issue which contributed to my leaving the game previously out of boredom. Some classes don't even really get interesting until closer to lvl 50 (or even lvl 60 in some cases) and I think they could've fixed that AND simplified all the abilities that characters acquire over time. I'm hoping to see some of this addressed with Stormblood but it really seems like they could take out a LOT of abilities in the game and simply power them up via passive traits as you level up. A lot of the lvl 60 abilities I would've had in to use at lower lvls with less damage to spice up early gameplay and get the proper rotations going EARLY as opposed to forcing everyone to completely re-learn their job at 60 from 50 which doesn't always work as I STILL see people doing lvl 50 rotations in Dun Scaith!

    I went THM and into BLM as my first class. But I"ve always gone the nuker mage in any game. BLM was my first in XI. I know its probably too repetitive of a rotation for some but I've never gotten tired of it. I play SMN and SCH on the side. But I only do the 50+ on BLM.
    I need to level ARC more though. I don't have quelling strikes so I was making my guild mad some times by pulling hate because I'm all pimped out with gear and nuking.

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 7 років тому +4

      At low level, perharps. At level 60 DRG is probably more complicated than the MNK.
      That said, Pugilist is probably more newbie friendly because it teaches you how to play dps on endgame from the beggining, while Lancer doesn't until it becomes a DRG.

    • @Kiyosuki
      @Kiyosuki 7 років тому

      Dragoon does have by far the most boring 1-50 but it does really pick up and become a much more dynamic dps with valuable utility 50-60.
      Despite that though, when it comes to end game I think generally speaking it still has a pretty comparatively straightforward rotation even when juggling Blood of the Dragon and efficient Geirskogul usage, while Monk probably has one of the more complex and situationally variable end game rotations in the game. That might be somewhat balanced out by the fact there's a lot of room for optimization in Dragoons' rotation (or the opposite even.) precisely because of it's relative straightforwardness. Couple in more movement options and the streamlined BotD rotation leaving maybe a bit more room for handling raid mechanics while potentially keeping the rotation going (easier said than done sometimes), which is important since dropping BotD is a noticeable dip in personal DPS...and knowing when to use Battle Litany (I see so many Drg's use it on cooldown which I think is a big mistake sometimes, since some mechanics and sections of the encounter might require dps burn.) Basically, Dragoons' more straightforward rotation is kind of its blessing and curse, since it leaves room for both high optimization, and error. I think that's why the quality of Dragoons can fluctuate so wildly.
      That all said however, Monk still has a LOT to memorize with its end game rotation even if it might be somewhat more stable. At least on paper it still has the much more busy rotation, with Ninja close behind imo as far as melee dps go (but then Ninja has all kinds of positional related complexities along with bonafide inputs for the Mudras to put up with)

    • @milkmaniv2089
      @milkmaniv2089 7 років тому +8

      @Kiyosuki As a DRG and MNK main (with around ~2.5k hours clocked in as DRG and MNK since 3.0), if we're talking purely in terms of skill cap, MNK is honestly quite straightforward and easy to play in raids.
      After you memorize the basic GCD rotation (which is honestly quite easy for any job) there's little thought (comparatively) involved in terms of optimization in encounters/raids outside of your PB opener and Fracture placement (which you don't get to do often because of TP issues), coupled with very short and few oGCDs that are almost always used on cooldown for pushing max DPS, compared to DRG, which has pretty strict cooldown optimization where you have precise windows for Geirskogul timings on a fight per fight basis, 12 oGCDs to juggle (some of which are not always used on cooldown but have specific placements in raid timelines), animation lock and RNG positionals that you have to instantly react to or suffer a heavy potency loss.
      The CD usage of top MNKs and DRGs on FFLogs reinforces this. If we're talking skill floor, then I do think MNK's is quite a lot higher than DRG's, but MNK is always the class I would recommend to people who are brand new to melee DPS as it teaches the fundamentals very well while being easy to pick up for anyone that's competent.

    As a new player myself, I feel like Thaumaturge is too squishy to be a good first class. Especially since there's no dodging in the game. I went Marauder, but played both Arcanist and Conjurer to level 10. Either of those seem pretty well suited to the new caster, IMO.

  • @FShani
    @FShani 7 років тому

    Gladiators/Paladins are not beginner friendly until after level 30, at which point they become much easier to play. New players need to know this so they do not become discouraged when they struggle with the early game Gladiator, where it takes some knowledge of both tanking and the mechanics of the game to properly hold enmity.
    Additionally I would strongly dissuade players inexperienced to tanking to begin the game as a tank. Many players struggle to grasp how to hold aggro properly early on, and beginning as a tank can be a jarring experience. If you have not tanked in other mmorpgs, or even if you have but have not done so in a while and are rusty I strongly recommend starting as dps or healing and watching how the tanks in your parties operate, learn from them what is effective and what isn't before diving into tank yourself. Don't worry, it does not take long to level your first class/job up to max before switching over to a tanking job.
    It's not that tanking in this game is particularly difficult, but there is an initial learning curve that many struggle with. I just don't want new players to become discouraged early on when they lack all of the abilities/tools of later levels and struggle with their desired job.

    Having been playing this game ever since the beta, I can safely say that in my opinion, Monk(my main) is easily the most fun class. It's hilarious when you get speed buffs on top of your GL and basically go Hundred Fists mode. Although, one thing that I deeply hate about monk is the TP usage compared to other DPS, especially considering that the rapid consumption of TP makes skill speed so much more worse than all other stats and overall unreliable. I really hope that TP scaling is added for monks(for example, if your SS is 800, it removes 5 tp from abilities, etc.)

    Disagree with melee. Rogues are better because they have only 3 positional moves, 2 of which are above level fifty. pugilist and its rotation dependence makes it a bit harder to solo, where most of the time you're forced to attack in the front

Sure, they got me, the Bard of the group, but also popping a goad on someone else (like Warriors) while I'm doing my songs would be a great help indeed. Especially if the healer needs mana with Mage's Ballad and the tank is getting low on TP. Or even making double the TP go up with Goad and Army's Paeon at the same time if the healer doesn't need mana.

      @Thor M Getting the "advanced job" doesn't completely change everything the original class had until then. In rogue's case, you become a ninja but you still retain that badass blade dancing style. The only thing that changes after that is that you get hand signs that you can mix around to cast ninjutsu along with some more supportive abilities. Advanced jobs are pretty much required for endgame but it really isn't as though you lose the aspects of the original class, you instead add a few more new components to play with.

    • @RungaTunga

      I should probably elaborate a bit more and mention that post 30 ninja still gets all the same moves that rogue would get but they also get extra moves that rogue doesn't get. Basically if rogue were to have 15 moves by level 60, then ninja would have those same 15 moves along with another 10 or so. Hope that helps clear up any sort of confusion.
