There’s an old Mexican lady and her two sons in my town that’s living this EXACT same dream! She started out making meals at home and just driving around with her two young sons to random construction job sites at breakfast/lunch time(how I discovered her) in this old beat-up rusted camper truck she “converted” into a “mobile food truck”, and would serve THE BEST home made Mexican meals, tacos, burritos, biscuits, soups, sandwiches, and just everything(Gatorade, snacks, cigarettes, even medicine and work supplies like ear plugs, beanies, gloves, etc!) some meals cooked hot fresh in front of you, others she made the night before at home ready to go for a fast bag lunch! Now she has two office/prep kitchen locations across town that each son(now grown) manages, a fleet of fully decked out proper food trucks, countless employees, and even her own Mexican restaurant! Her and the sons were always so nice, they would even run tabs(IOU’s) or give a free lunch to help out some of the poorer workers or immigrants on the job site(even me when I forgot my wallet)...It’s been amazing to see how they started with poor humble beginnings, and watch them grow into successful rich business owners living the American Dream!
My hubby took me to the South for our 25th anniversary. I told him We are going to Savannah so I can eat at The Lady & Sons. And that's exactly what we did. I remember the vegetables the best, they were SO delicious!! I may never get back there but I'll always have that wonderful memory of Savannah.
I met Paula Deen in 1998 at her book signing for The Lady & Sons cookbook, held at an independent bookstore in Charleston SC. Paula as shown in the thumbnail photo here is how I remember her. We had a delightful chat, and she shared stories about Clint Eastwood's crew dining at the restaurant during the filming of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". Paula was not well-known outside of Savannah back then, so the crowd at the signing was small. When I got ready to walk away from the table, she laughed and told me to stay put so she could look busy. What a difference a day makes.
This is such an amazing story . I love hearing how she got started . And I tell you right now she had earned every bit of her success. She is such an inspiration!
