  • Are your jaw muscles tight and sore? Ellie, a remedial massage and sports therapist, explains what could be causing your jaw pain, then teaches you how to massage your key jaw muscles to relieve the pain.
Jaw pain and tightness is a common problem. The main cause is usually stress and tension. Sometimes it can be teeth related or even caused by a trauma to the jaw.
Ellie shows you how to do your own massage on the tight masseter muscles around the jaw and the temporalis muscles up into your temples. These muscles can become overactive, especially if you tend to tighten your jaw and clench during the day or at night in your sleep. This often happens without you even knowing you are doing it.
Ellie demonstrates how to do trigger point therapy and myofacial release massage, similar to what a massage therapist would do for you.

This video ended ten days of agonising pain from a problem I’ve never had in my entire life. Woke up one morning with a locking jaw and stabbing pains in my masseter muscle. I honestly started to think I had cancer of the jaw or something. Thank you so much for this upload. I spent twenty minutes on these exercises and the bloody pain has GONE! Truly grateful. X

OMG i was about to write this exact comment to a tee. I am here ar 3.26am looking for relief and when i did the first technique by using 2 fingers each side as i did it once it ended the feeling of relief was overwhelming and mad me chock up due to the relief of pressure i got.
I have many symtoms and it is taking over my life. I had to have several teeth out a few yrs ago and that is when it all started not long after and the symtoms well unbelievable, i have headaches daily, pain back of head, eyes neck back arms shoulders scalp and if i was to carry on it would be about another 10 to 15 other symtoms. I clench in my sleep my partner says but i also clench all day, until i notice then i stop so i believe im now stuck in the position of the jaw not releasing enough and i cant take much more what can i do or where do i go for help.
thank you this brief relief though it is a life saver.

I got my wisdom tooth extracted, and biopsy of the bone underneath. 3 weeks later, the tightness and swelling of the jaw ensues, and soon I developed 'fear of chewing' anything due to the head-splitting pain involved.
Not sure if what I have falls under TMD/J, but this (Ellie) lady's description of the pains and what to expect doing the massages is EXACTLY what I felt.
Doctor had prescribed muscle relaxants, but I hope this helps too.

I under went PT to help with my TMJ and it worked great. I graduated from it June 7, 2018 after two months of weekly appointment. Mandy my therapist was amazing. With that being said if I was to go back once a month for “monitoring” insurance won’t cover it and it will be $75. I was feeling great till an ER visit just last week where I was so stressed I went back to clenching. I wear a mouth guard at night but it wasn’t helping. A week of pain and wondering if I should go see Mandy again. Found your video this morning and INSTANT relief. I could feel the muscle literally relaxing after the stretches and the pain went away. I did the first 2, because I have a broken lower left jaw, and it did help, because I need to keep it closed firmly all the time for 40 days, and it is tightened with rubbers. I was doing similar things before, but not exactly that way. I was massaging the two side muscles by applying pressure, and doing circular type movements.

Maybe i have TMJ. I’m not sure why but I’ve been having “ice pick” headaches on the right side of my head (in the temporalis muscle where you pointed) But it’s only on one side, and in one place. I thought it was just a real bad migraine from stress and went to urgent care where they wanted to run a brain scan and put me on a steroid. Eventually the headache subsided and i started having aches running down my jaw to under my chin so i put a hot pack under my chin and my headaches stopped but my jaw felt achey. I think it definitely has to do with how i sleep. Now i prop a pillow a certain away so it’s comfortable under my chin and the side of my head. It helped a lot.

I'm so glad I went down a youtube rabbit hole of massiter muscle relief, and that I decided to scroll down through the comments. I don't know how long this product has been around but I wish that I could have been made aware of it years ago. My facial muscles are a wasteland of excruciatingly painful knots from years of clenching/grinding during sleep. In all the searching I've done to find relief nothing has quite worked, but this looks extremely promising. It makes so much sense now after reading on their website about how it is an addiction to the soothing feeling of clenching those muscles, even though it is so heavily damaging. I've had half waking glimpses of that feeling for years but haven't been able to bring it to my conscious awareness. Thank you for this comment. I'll be obtaining one of their sleep guard headbands asap.

Thibault Willemyns great start. You may need to massage every day for a while if you have had the pain for a while.

I've been experiencing locked jaw for about three years and I'm so happy I found this video. It didn't unlock my jaw completely, I'm going to ask my dentist for that, but it did loosen it to where I am able to open it for the first time in months. It's so painful I can't eat or brush my teeth or even cry because it becomes swollen. I'm in so much pain.

Dominik hi, thx for your comment. Definitely see your dentist, and keep gently doing the massage. Visit our website for other jaw exercises that help to get your jaw moving better. Good luck with it all!

myPhysioSA North Adelaide I am planning to soon as possible. I'm 18 but still live at home so I'm waiting until a parent can take me. What do you suggest I do about it being dislocated? Because it's not only sore and locked, but also out of line and I can see it and feel it out of place. Thank you again so much

Dominik hi, you need to get it checked , it can be very complicated , with many different causes. Can't give any specific advice or diagnosis without an assessment etc, so try to see a professional as soon as possible.

Dominik Dr Weinstein's tmj headband stops night teeth grinding and clenching, which means it addresses the root cause of tmj and is possibly able to actually cure it. I strongly recommend it.

I've just been massaging the area but I didn't know about these 2 trigger points in this socket, other than the one right in front of the ear. I feel like these will really help me. I actually felt the muscle release tension for the first time, even though it came back as soon as I stopped but hopefully after I've done this a few times a day it'll be better.

    Madam,
Nice video. In some videos I have seen fingers/knuckles running from top to bottom out side the mouth as masseter release. Which is correct..? Can be done both methods.? Doing both methods have different type of reasons .?

Hi, the other techniques you mention are great options as well. They are fine to try as well. The answer is, find what works best for you. Try all the techniques and see what feels best. Best of luck 👍

Thank you very much! I have muscle tension from the shoulders up, but my right jaw in particular is very sore, hard and stiff--Like a knot. I have either referred pain at the forehead or occipital pain coming up from the back of the head. At the temple of the right side of the head, after doing the message, I have twitching. Can that be from the massage? Will that eventually stop? I'm doing various massages that is helping! I also have continuous tinitus bilaterally. I will be seeing my neurologist soon! Thanks again!

    • @MyphysiosaAuAdelaide

Hi, If massage doesnt seem to be helping, then stop and see your doctor or specialist. If you have tension headaches or bruxism (overactive masseter muscle) then massage will either only give temporary relief or can temporarily aggravate symptoms. Massage wont be harmful, it just wont be helpful in the long run. Good luck David
