Totally. When I was a bartending in my early and mid twenties, I'd turn the lights up and play this. Everyone would sing while they finished their drinks before heading out. A good way to end the night.
some suggestions for 90s indie/alternative: Oasis “Wonderwall” The Verve “Bittersweet Symphony” Blur “There’s No Other Way” Jesus Jones “Right Here Right Now” Lush “Hypocrite” The Breeders “Cannonball” Belly “Feed the Tree” The Sugarcubes “Hit”
Yup. And literally no one in the 90s caught onto that so he had to explicitly explain it in a concert years later. He said he thought it was a clever metaphor but apparently was too clever for his own good.
The 90s were the best because you had every style of music blow up- punk/ska, grunge/alternative, rap/hip hop, indie... it was all so good and new and exciting :) I'm still waiting for Beastie Boys "Sabotage" :)
King Tim please consider Fleetwood Mac 'The Chain" 'Rhiannon", "Gypsy", 'Landslide" " Edge of Seventeen" "Dreams" ' Dont Stop Thinking about Tomorrow" "Sarah' ALL BANGERS!!
Some more from 90s/00s: REM - Losing My Religion Lifehouse - Hanging By a Moment Gin Blossoms - Found Out About You and Hey Jealousy Goo Goo Dolls - Name, Iris
I love that while watching certain songs (similar to "In The Air Tonight" and "More Than a Feeling" and "Baba O'Riley" to name a few), there are these moments when you know the instruments or a lyrical voice are going to come crashing in, and you anticipate their reaction with a smile on your face... like "Oh, they don't know what's about to happen... wait for it... wait for it ... yeah!" As others have said - sometimes feels like I'm hearing these old familiar songs for the first time myself.
God I hate that video!!!!! :). Only because it was not announced that IH 20 in San Antonio would be shut down. I was stuck near front and had to wait over 4 hours. Credit to REM’s people they kept bringing water and snacks to all of us who had no exit. Still hate the song ( I heard it 100 times that day) and the video lol.
The drummer is an actual college professor. He wrote a book about the odd experience of going from being a music teacher, to a college buddy asking him to join his band, to touring the world in a successful rock band, to back to normal life.
Oh my goodness - this song takes me back to my late 20s (late 1990s). Thanks, guys! By the way, how about The Verve 'Bittersweet Symphony'? English rock band, huge hit in 1997! You'll love the video as well.
I learned things by reading your comments - that this was about becoming a father - now the line about every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end. Very cool. Your channel is educational. 🌈 the more you know
Mary C You are so lucky!! I have yet to see them in concert. I have watched some of their concerts on TV but I know that’s not even close to being there.
This song takes me back, my twin boys and one of their friends and I were driving and singing the chorus, LOUD LOUD LOUD. Makes me happy to remember these memories, now my grandchildren know and love this song.
Dan Wilson and John Munson are music legends here in Minneapolis. Had a local indie project prior to Semisonic called Trip Shakespeare back in the 80s/90s. They’ve both done many things since, too.
FYI, the song was actually written about the writer's premature baby finally being released from a NICU, but the lyrics fit so many other situations, especially bars, that it took off. Surgeons all over the world played it while stitching up patients, i.e. closing the surgical procedure. The drummer subsequently wrote one of the best books you'll ever read about his experience as a member of a suddenly famous band finding themselves on an international tour thanks to this one song. He talks about what he learned about how record companies really work; it's a shark-eat-shark world.
I just love your reactions when the singer changes pitch, key changes, new instruments come in, chorus comes up, I could go on. Lol. you kids are wonderful for listening to music where people were actually singing! This is my teenaged years you're listening to! The 90s had some of the best rock music!
Please check out Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar on Me". (official video) Rick Allen is an amazing drummer who wouldn't let the fates of life stop his drumming....an accident caused him to lose an arm, but he came back stronger than ever!
Oh man, oh man. This band was formed in Minneapolis, so I always thought this was a GREAT song. I also remember drunkenly belting it out in college, good times lol
This song adds even more meaning when you learn that he was inspired by this song when his daughter was in the ICU for months when she was born. Very cool song! Once you learn that and listen to the lyrics gain it is more awesome!
Hey I’m a retired high school teacher! Loving you guys! Makes me miss my school kids! Always played music in my classroom! Listen to some Foreigner, Waiting for a Girl Like You, I want to Know What Love Is, Head Games Led Zeppelin, Kashmir Bachman Turner Overdrive, Takin’ Care of Business Tracy Chapman, Fast Car
One of my favs! Back in the late 90's I sang back up in a small band that used to cover it!😁 thank you for bringing me back to a place and time where I was happy.
Watching your videos I'm also reminded of other songs that I haven't heard in a long time. For some reason I just thought of Everclear and their song Wonderful.
Thank you for all the smiles you are creating with these vids. I’d love to see you react to Otis Redding “These Arms of Mine”, Third Eye Blind “Semi Charmed Life”, Maroon 5 “She Will Be Loved”, Guns N Roses “Sweet Child o’Mine” and Tim McGraw “Don’t Take the Girl”
I've been listening to this song since it came out and JUST learned that the lead singer, whos wife was pregnant at the time, wrote this song about childbirth....closing time on the baby's time inside mommy and time to go out into the world. DEEP. Hits different when you know...
C'mon Wendy! Here i was thinking it was just about having a great time at a bar! 😔 It does hit different... Beautiful, but definitely a different vibe😁
Today is my sister's birthday so I've been thinking about her, and it's cool that you guys picked this song today. When it came out, my sister and brother bartended together at a place that was always still packed at closing time. They'd turn up the lights and blast "Closing Time" on the juke box to clear people out. We all adored each other back then. Not so much now. Politics! I don't want to hang out with them - at all - but I do so appreciate being reminded of those days and being part of something really special. Thanks you guys... again 💜💕🙏
Try HEY JEALOUSY by the Gin Blossoms. You want someone who didn't sound like he looked like? Buddy Holly, listen to EVERY DAY. Trivia -- Buddy Holly was on the airplane that crashed, killing him and several other of the biggest musicians back in about 1955. It's the "day the music died" that Don McLean sings about in American Pie, which you loved. As for this one, the lead singer is singing about the baby his wife is pregnant with, and how this is the last call for the carefree life he had. It's kinda nice. He's signing off for daddyhood.
This is why you "can't judge a book by it's cover" if you do you just might miss out on something great! You guys have opened yourselves up to all different chapters of history of music. And the many different artists who do not sound like they appear. I LOOOVE watching the auditions for 'The Voice' to see these types of reactions 😁
"He looks like he should be reading books!" Yeah, now imagine him singing Prince's Erotic City, lol. He did, and he freaking rocked it. It's one of the B-Sides on the Singing in My Sleep single along with a cover of Air That I Breathe, which was also amazing (better than the original IMO).
My local gym closes every single night playing this for 15 minutes near close. Semisonic started playing in local bars all over the city and hit it big with this song.
I’ve heard this song a million times, but it’s my first time seeing the video. Lol. I haven’t really watched videos since I was a teenager in the 80’s when MTV was so popular. Funny seeing what they look like after all this time!

YESSSSS! MOM'S MONDAY 😄
I love this idea!! Mom's Monday - brilliant!!!! You HAVE to do it!!!
That would be fun if she's game!
This song is used at most bars for last call.
Totally. When I was a bartending in my early and mid twenties, I'd turn the lights up and play this. Everyone would sing while they finished their drinks before heading out. A good way to end the night.
I am so glad someone mentioned that.
I used to use it as the last song for the karaoke bar I worked at. EVERYBODY sang it at the TOP of their lungs as they walked out! Good times!!

"Closing Time," was written by the singer, about him becoming a father.
Yup. And literally no one in the 90s caught onto that so he had to explicitly explain it in a concert years later. He said he thought it was a clever metaphor but apparently was too clever for his own good.
The video of him explaining it and playing is soooo great and on UA-cam. Look it up
Wanted to say this first, but you beat me to it. Totally true story and makes the song even better...
So then, "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" means... *snort*
