I always loved this song growing up. I’ll never forget my class valedictorian closed out our high school graduation with “so gather up your jackets, move into the exits, I hope you have found a friend. Closing time, every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.” It would probably be cliche now, but damn that was a great way for us 90’s kids to close out that chapter of our lives!
This! I'm 43 years old and I only became aware of this song for the first time a few years ago. I mean, I'm sure I probably heard it before that plenty of times but I was never "aware" of it. Today was the day I found out that I was 18 years old when it was released. On the flip side, you could tell me that it was released yesterday and I wouldn't raise an eyebrow. It sounds like it belongs everywhere.
POV: This is playing on the radio, you've just left blockbuster with your mom, she was cool enough to rent you Bride of Chucky AND House on Haunted Hill, they've been the talk of the playground for weeks and you can't wait to brag on the gory parts to your friends, next stop is burger king to snag a kids meal but just not any kids meal, a BIG KIDS meal... You don't know it yet but whenever there's trouble in your life, this is the moment your mind will wander back to and you'll find the strength to push on a little further.
This shit makes me cry. I was watching Dan Wilson in 2019 sing Someone Like You, and this one. And he's still good, but he doesn't ROCK like he does here. And that's cool, maybe he got all the rock out of his system. But IDK. I'm 28. I'm not 18 anymore. Not 15 anymore. And you guys who are 45 or whatever are gonna say "you're still young!". And I mean, yeah, but not AS young. IDK. I'm not ready to stop rocking. I don't wanna get older. I don't wanna die. I want to keep rocking forever. But it's all in the song... "closing time, every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end".
I don't know if this helps, but I'm in my fifties now, and I still rock out with the volume up. One can mature as a person and still love great music. One doesn't want to become that guy with the endless midlife crisis, and tbh, I'm not going to dive for a volleyball like I did when I was in my teens or twenties. One doesn't have to get "old" in one's head, though, and it seems to me that there's something to be learned from this.
Caught these guys at Slim's in SF, CA, USA in 1998 for this tour, and they rocked it, best show of the dozen I've seen at that venue since then! Thanks for posting.
This a simple song that has stood the test of time, I heard at work wondered who it was? Music has about died, when this one was released had the Toadies Possum KIngdom , Seven Mary 3, The Waters Edge STP, Bush, and many more for the alternative rock scene
1:57 That ''Yeaaah!'' though! edit: You cannot find a HEARTILY LAUGH or EXPRESSION in ''our'' songs nowadays! That made me feel better and i was also like, ''Hit it, dude! Yeaaaah!''
This song reminds me of the commercials that used to come on during the NBA on NBC back in the late 90’s early 2000’s ..like the Budweiser commercial lol
Great one hit wonder, except the singer went on to write hits for a couple zillion other performers no one has heard of like Adele, Chris Stapleton and Taylor Swift. Dan Wilson has a boatload of grammys! Including this song! Not too shabby!
Feeling Strangely Fine is such a good album that it's hard to believe they're a one-hit wonder. It really went unappreciated. Aside from "Closing Time", I always liked "She's Got It All Worked Out", "Secret Smile", "DND", and "California".
If you like this band (& like to read) check out the book by the drummer Jacob... it's great & funny & a lot about how this song was EVERYWHERE, like on the radio at all times. Totally good book! Also funny how they got styled the "cool looking band" circa 1996
Great book. A very intelligent book ("So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star" - Jacob Slichter) with all the business details a band encounters that you normally don't see in rock music books..
That's what I would have thought back in the day but by today standards this is an absolute rock band, pure quality music, way better than 99.999% of what comes out today.
Props to the bassist for playing piano and bass at the same time
The drummer also played the synthesir on his right side not sure if it was a synthesir.
@@ginnogalochino yes he does👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
And backing vocals during the chorus, thats a busy job
90s Man 😎👍

Epic Song. Reminds me of my departed fiance'. Miss her.
There's an "e" missing there, dude. Just saying...
@@davewalkden7248wow, he shares how he misses his late love and all you can come up with is a missing vowel? Honestly???
@scottalpert3444
love that song too, sorry for your loss
"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end". What a brilliant thought. Impressed.
It’s from the old times
One of the best rock albums ever...... California is the very best track but it's a 10/10 all the way
"I hope you have found a friend". Love that line, gets me every time.
absolutely !!!

1998 what a year 😂
Respect to the bassist for playing two instruments
Greatest line ever "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here"!!!
When I found out this song was about having a child, suddenly it all made sense, and what I thought was a cheesy song is now one I adore.
I was fortunate to see Semisonic, and then Dan Wilson solo, and he told the story of this song and how everyone really got it wrong.
98 was the best year
"You don't have to go home but you can't stay here". This line is genious.
It blows my mind that this was new at some point. Feels like it's always been here slowly moving forward. Kinda like time.

Totally the best Rock Era since the 60s. 90s and 80s will live forever!

Great song. They put a new one out this year called "you're Not Alone" and it is super good.
