I like these few seconds of waiting at the end, before Valentina comes out of the music, and the audience respecting that before starting to applaud. A true sharing of passion between Beethoven, the player and the listeners.

This is a gorgeous performance. That's definitely an overhead stage light that blew at 10:53, because you can see the dramatic lighting drop on Valentina and the keyboard immediately afterward. compared to before when it was much brighter. She barely flinched and it didn't effect her playing even for one note !

Not many pianists would have the courage to play a whole recital on a more than 100 year old piano! The combination of your art, this piano, that has obviously a soul and Beethoven is pure magic.
I regret all the more not having been able to attend this concert due to a sore throat and painful cough that would have been criminal to inflict on you and the audience.
Wow, I had read in the comments about the exploding spotlight, and I thought I was ready for it, but when it exploded, I jumped a foot in my chair! And Valentina didn`t miss a note and didn`t jump, that is total concentration and professionalism, I`m impressed.
I have listen to the best pianist in this era and hope you all agree that Valentina is on the top of this list. Divine expression of what Beethoven composed. Can't get enough of her playing.

I absolutely love this piece.One of Beethoven's greatest works played here with total mastery of every note.Tremendous feeling and expression with a vivid imagination, but never to the point of becoming sentimental.This is the way Rachmaninoff would have played it! Incidentally Artur Schnable once said Rachmaninoff's Beethoven was the best he had ever heard.

music is not just a sheet with notes, there is an internal rythm, phrasing, swing, call it whatever, which makes music exist.And it is exactly what I think she feels best, she makes MUSIC! thank you ma'am
She's got the beautiful hands of a wide receiver, capable of grasping anything, and one of the most beautiful trills possible. This is a textbook case, I think, of the virtues of playing in steady tempi-making momentum itself an expressive feature. She lets the tunes play themselves, as in that little, importunate, meek, obsessive four-note figure that nibbles and nibbles its way through the entire last movement, ending with the quietest of swallows, the mousiest of gulps. What a pianist! She makes Beethoven so clear!
I must say, the 3rd movement is my favourite in the sonata :)
The loud bang at 10:52 made my day, just seeing Lisitsa be so wrapped up in the performance to be completely unaffected. Beethoven would have shit a brick
Wonderfully played, and nice to hear a late 19th century piano. I noticed wearing headphones (BEWARE! DON'T DO THIS) that at 10:43 and 10:46, right before the "surprise" that there was a slight twang -- almost imperceptible. I wonder if it was from the piano or from the light filament about to pop.

If you listen carefully with headphones, you can hear the low rumbling sound of the subway passing 3 or 4 times rue de la Boetie during the performance :-)

I was at Les Jacobins in Toulouse, France last century when a complete power failure occurred towards the end of the concert. A small torch was found which, together with a few cigarette lighters, gave enough light for Jorge Bolet to continue playing Liszt as though nothing had happened. An artist is an artist.
I was there and that was quite frightening ! But as anyone can notice, perfect concentration of Mrs Lisitsa, not even a single wrong note or tempo variation !!
Theatrical performers are used to such occurrences. In the theatre where I do many lighting designs, we have several such lamp explosions every year. Some are much louder, such as when a PAR64 lamp explodes.

No one is here and I was doing my work while listening to this. At 10:52, I thought I heard a gun shot in our building so I paused the video and went out to see what was happening. After a while I thought giving the video another try, and it was there!!!!!!!!

It is titled, Exploding Beethoven! I ran it back and watched the moment again and saw the barest of jumps from Valentina, but she is so professional she continued on beautifully!
So, I let UA-cam run on its own in the background, so I didn't see the warning in the title. I was just relaxing to the lovely piano music and then jumped five feet in the air, ROFL!! It took me a minute to realize the sound came from the vid.
This piano sonata was performed just the way Beethoven has played it. So superb . Valentina is such a God - given artist. I was astounded by her artistry.
I've never heard this song and (I'm no authority) it doesn't really sound like Beethoven to me. It's such a magnificent piece and sounds sooo romantic period. Thanks for uploading music; besides being marveled by how good you are I've become aware of so many beautiful pieces. You do the world a service

This piece is Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 14. It's called Tempest because Beethoven wrote it for Shakespeare's play the Tempest. He liked it so much that he interpreted the play in music.

I actually thought it was too when I read the description. I was like tight, just like Tchaikovsky added cannons, Beethoven added lightning.
Beethoven never added Lightning to this piece, it is bad that they used it in the 2. movement, it would fit for the 1. and 3. movement but not for the 2., where everything should be calm. Then there is the thing that it is Tempest sonata, but it is not some outer storm where is lightning and thunder, it's the inner one

In Wilhelm Kempff's lecture he does say that Beethoven supposedly told his secretary that if you want to know what it's about, read Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in which the Duke of Milan conjures up a storm.

Nary a flinch at the point of lighting drama. Concentration and focus is important to the emotional nuances of Beethoven's work. Nicely done.

I must have watched this performance 20 times.......it`s fantastic and...........that damned light bulb catches me out every time. It is though an unbelievable performance and she don`t batter an eyelid. The greatest pianist in my opinion.

One does not simply fall asleep during a Valentina Lisitsa concert.
He basically said that if Beethoven was in a concert hall and a member of the audience fell asleep he would send everyone out of the concert hall. However, judging by his biography he did not once send anyone out of the concert hall if someone spoke during his performances.
I'm not the best at reading Russian (not my first language), but he said something along those lines. :)
Consummate Artist and Professional that somehow "feels" the composer's notes and plays them to the highest original level(s) as one can possibly imagine. I am a fan..... often in "awe" of accomplishment....and thankful I can both see and hear. :-)

This pianist is a phenom. With the exception of Van Cliburn, I have never seen such expression and passion applied to an artistic interpretation.

году, в период тяжелого душевного кризиса. Как исполняет ее Valentina Lisitsa? Пианистке прекрасно удалась вся Sonata полностью, а не только ее первая часть, являющаяся драматургическим центром Sonata. Основной конфликт выражен уже в исполнении Главной партии, состоящей из мучительного вопроса "быть или не быть" (Largo) и энергичного ответа (Allegro).
Этот речитативный вопрос повторяется на протяжении всей первой части, чередуясь со страстными, протестными эпизодами, виртуозно исполненными Valentina Lisitsa. Вторая часть - некоторое отдохновение от внутренней борьбы
в общении с природой - прозвучала светло, нежно и торжественно, но пианистке и в ней удалось сохранить эмоциональное единство с первой частью, передать оттенки душевного смятения и волнения. Третья часть (Allegretto) часто исполняется пианистами оживленно, легко и светло. По - иному интерпретирует ее Valentina Lisitsa. Она не сглаживает контрасты, конфликт не исчезает и не разрешается - исход борьбы не предрешен, трагедийность не исчезает. Длинная пауза тишины в конце исполнения Sonata
подтверждает ее драматическую трактовку пианисткой. Мне понравилась данная интерпретация своей близостью к нотному тексту и духу музыки Beethoven, виртуозным исполнением, яркими контрастами, глубиной воплощения содержания и целостностью концепции. Считаю исполнение данной Sonata вершиной в творчестве пианистки Valentina Lisitsa.

Красиво выразили эмоции. У меня попроще: благодаря игре Виктории (тоже пианистка, публикующая на youtube) и Валентине я снова сел за фортепиано через 30 лет (после неоконченной ДМШ). В данный момент через полгода уже играю 1-2 части лунной сонаты (делаю попытки разучивать третью.часть - пока техники не хватает) и это приносит мне удовольствие.
