I once had a very scary experience with Amtrak. At Norfolk Virginia I had to ride the North East Regional.the train ended up being like 3.45 hours late due to vandal damage and they had to get an ex conrail dash 9 for power and what would’ve been a 4 hour wait for the capitol limited ended up being no wait at all because we got there when they were boarding...but on the bright side we made it to Chicago all well and went to IRM and got a cab ride in 1630:). Great video mike!!
For anyone wondering, at 7:46 the lead locomotive on that Downeaster Consist is the decades old EMD F40PH used on mainly both long and short distance trains back in the 70's - 90's.
My local train station is the Rensselaer Rail Station, which is Albany's train station on the Empire Service corridor! It never gets old watching a P32AC-DM go by with the Empire Service paint scheme!
Very nice video and narration. The lake shore limited runs from New York to Chicago which is about 900 miles, im right at the half way point along Lake Erie
An interesting point about the halfway point that is where I am at, the Erie Railroad that was completed in 1851 and was at the time the longest railroad in the world, ended a few foot from what later became the half way point of the New York Central NY to Chicago Main Line
As a european this was very interesting to see. American trains look quite different from ours and have allot of character. The Talgo cars look just like the ones used on the spanish highspeed train Talgo. I didn´t know Siemens also made diesel locomotives.
CoasterFan2105 well I mean the F59’s are still normal power until they’re sold off :/ I did see one of them today running Cascades service, as well as two on Sounder (which was odd)
Very enjoyable video of the various Amtrak corridors. I travel the Pacific Surfliner route between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard when I’m home in the San Diego area. I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Oxnard. I have no regrets at all about riding the Pacific Surfliners at all, it beats driving on what is becoming the I-5 parking lot in the San Diego North County & between the Los Angeles-Orange County Line & the I-605 San Gabriel Freeway is being rebuilt. It also beat driving the 101 parking lot as well.
I’ve ridden the Keystone Service from Lancaster to Harrisburg and back 2 time then Lancaster to Philadelphia and back once then Empire Service from Poughkeepsie to NY and back and also the silver star 9 years ago
Probably the most infortmative and interesting video I've seen discussing Amtrak's corridor trains, as well as the fleets in use. Excellent video and still clips as well. Great job!
My dad was an engineer on the trains from Chicago to Michigan and to St. Louis. ever since I was born. . He worked for AMTRAK for 38 years and an engineer for Amtrak for 32 years he was the first black engineer out of Chicago for Amtrak. I have a few videos of me riding with him and my uncle.
The heartland flyer is a small train like the Downeaster it’s 3 superliner coaches and run twice a day one in morning from Oklahoma City to fort worth Texas and one at night from Fort Worth to Oklahoma Train numbers: 822 821 (correct me if I’m wrong) Some days it runs as the “Big game train” extending to Dallas for a football game.
Actually rode the Lincoln Service for the first time a few weeks ago to Springfield. It was a very nice trip and with my line of work just starting (working for the state government) I'm sure I'll be taking it more often
I'm only 13 years old and I absolutely love trains. You make them seem even cooler with all your knowledge. Thaks for sharing and I can't wait to see your video on Lond-Distance routes!
i have seen an amtrak surfliner train with a p42dc locomotive on one end and an f40ph npcu on the other end, and that surfliner train was using horizon and amfleet coaches rather than surfliner coaches.
9:35 I first saw an SC44 on the Missouri River Runner in Kansas City in early December 2017. One year ago, train were lenghtened from 3 to 4 cars,, to 7 cars, usually with at least one old baggage car. No new coaches have appeared yet! I'd laso like to see a Midwest service from Kansas City ot Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraksa!
The CC and surfliner should be linked into one corridor service. A corridor train Connecting LA to San Jose, Fremont & Oakland would be a dream come true.
Slower and more dangerous=Amtrak trains. Faster and Overall Safer=Planes. But I still I like Amtrak trains and especially watching Amtrak train videos!
+CoasterFan2105, Your UA-cam Video of Yours is the Best, Dude. And Happy Early Easter Day and Happy Early April Fool's Day, Friend! YOU ROCK AND THANK YOU! :-D
I feel like the Keystone Corridor is Amtrak’s Miscellaneous Showcase route W/ Steam Engines. My reasoning behind that is because there is literally a clip of an Amtrak train with amfleet I and II cars and an ACS-64 was pulling some Superliner cars.
I like your video! I didnt know about the metroliner cars and how they were rebuilt. I'm wondering, when will you make a video about Amtrak Long Distance trains across America?? Looking forward to it. Also, will Amtrak restore the superliner cars similar to how they restored the Amfleet cars?
Great video! A few notes would be that the Illini route is pronounced ill•eye•nye, and the Pere Marquette (a midwestern route) uses bi-level superliner cars instead of the horizons and amfleets
I was thinking it was, but it was filmed in the winter in Alexandria, VA in January, 2015, so I came to the conclusion that it was probably the Silver Star before they removed the diner. I'm still not sure though.
I work in the railways in the UK I actually think, as a basic buisness plan, Amtrak are on the right sort of tack by focusing on local and intercity services. The ideal Amtrak set up would probably be Limited Long distance services, subsidised by federal government. With more frequent medium distance intercity trains that can out-compete airtravel regarding speed and convenience. Ideally you'd have heavy commuter services into large cities to boost your profits, but in the states those seem to be the bastion of local transit authorities.
...the Hiawatha Line also was to employ Talgo units and be extended from Milwaukee to Madison ( the first leg of what would be an HSR line between Chicago and Minneapolis . Sadly the short sighted governor Wisconsin turned down the funding for the Milwaukee - Madison leg using flawed data for operating costs as the basis for nixing the project. Trains on the line were to operate at between 120 and 125 MPH and would likely have been pulled by Siemens Chargers. The current speed for Hiawatha service between Milwaukee and Chicago is the Amtrak "default" of 79 MPH. The line is also unique in that there is a station at the west end of KMKE airport free shuttle service to the airport terminal (there is also a reader board in the air terminal that displays train times). After the project was cancelled, Talgo closed it's assembly and maintnence shop (where two additional train sets for the Cascades line were built as well) and sued the state of Wisconsin for the cost of two trains that were already completed for the Hiawatha line. That equipment was later moved to Illinois and currently is in storage. Currently one train, the long distance Empire Builder (which operates between Chicago and Seattle/Portland) , provides the only service beyond Milwaukee to the Twin Cities.
I am a train and I approve this footage.

@@CoasterFan2105 Where is Valley Flyer?
Train Talk is the best series I've ever seen on UA-cam!
Agreed!
I second that
Third on that!
Thanks, everyone!
Fourth on it!
The Downeaster is extending in a year or two to Rockland, Maine.
Cool! I heard they were supposed to do a test of that this summer, but that has since been cancelled.
Yes, the NNEPRA is planning on doing some track work and test runs in the summer of 2019.
But how?
Note: Amtrak scheduled to replace amtrak acela express into the new amtrak avelia liberty to be in service in 2021-2022
That will be neat to see.
@@CoasterFan2105 yeah it will
Josedanielmuratallamuratalla Muratalla I saw the train at the 30th St. Yard in Philadelphia
Yeet I need help it’s being transferred to Colorado for testing. Amazing to see it!

Thank you very much! Yeah, the Lake Shore Limited is a neat train. One of my favorites of the eastern long distance trains.

Martin Sorensen well you might as well move to America 😂!
I really love that stretch of track between the I-680 lanes at 14:14
10:16 a little update for new Railfans: as of 2019, the Hoosier states doesn't operate anymore due to a lack of fund.
This is the best one yet! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, I will!
Amtrak Cascades also uses F59PHi’s, which will be sold to Metra in the future, as well as P42’s from time to time.
Yeah, there are still a few that appear on the Cascades from time to time.
CoasterFan2105 well I mean the F59’s are still normal power until they’re sold off :/ I did see one of them today running Cascades service, as well as two on Sounder (which was odd)

Amtrak Surfliner goes to San Luis? I thought it only went from San Diego, to LA.
Yes it does!
SheeWantsAJaayy yep, Most trains that go toward San Luis Obispo Terminate in Goleta.

My first ever experience with Amtrak was the Maple Leaf, from Toronto to NYC about 14 hours, spent 1 hour on the Niagara Falls border though.
Great video work. Much info to absorb, but still very interesting.
Mike you know how to cover Amtrak. Thanks bud for putting our beloved Passenger Railroad in the spotlight. Keep up the good work.

Idea for next Train Talk: Discontinued Amtrak Trains
We all know the hoosier state is one of them. It discontinued 6 months ago.
It’s a shame because now the Cardinal is all that’s left from Indianapolis to Chicago, and it only runs thrice weekly, so your options are limited.
That super freaking cool.
Liked this video. Lots of great information. Thank you for sharing!

1:25 that’s actually the Silver Meteor
I was thinking it was, but it was filmed in the winter in Alexandria, VA in January, 2015, so I came to the conclusion that it was probably the Silver Star before they removed the diner. I'm still not sure though.
CoasterFan2105 hmm yeah what time was the clip taken?
Well, sunset was around 5:10, so I think it was about 4:30. If it was the Star, it was probably a little late.
Why Did Amtrak Remove The Dining Car From The Silver Star?
Does Amtrak have F40PHR NPCU's or were they scrapped? And what does 'R' stand for?
The "R" just stands for "rebuild". They are essentially the same as any other F40PH, but they were built using parts from traded-in SDP40F parts.
The Non Power Cab Units are former F40PHs. They can still be seen on the Hiawathas.
11:09 my favorite amtrak route
FROM ALBANY TO NIEGRA FALLS, AND FROM NIEGRA FALLS TO ALBANY, THEY ALSO USE P32ACDM DYEL MODE LOCOMOTIVES!
