  • North East Derbyshire as a rule is a district that is very rural but located within that rurality are some large villages, and in the case of today's parish, no fewer than five of them (well, four and a half) collide together to form one great bit conurbation. It wasn't always this way though. One of the started life as a small market village, complete with a market charter, and was an area heavily influenced by stocking weavers.
There was then coal which when discovered, brought about changes in the area. The collieries would be sunk and the workers would come, and with it, a whole lot of housing. In some regards, the pit here wasn't all that much of a big deal - it was never the most productive - but regardless of that, the houses would still go up and populated by the workers. That would lead to the transformation of a small, almost non existent settlement into an industrial metropolis.
Then there's the other village which tags on to this, and it was originally just five houses big. After the colliery was sunk, it would grow immensely fast. Once dubbed the "Black Hole of Derbyshire" though, the "Blocks" as they were known of terraced housing would be condemned and demolished by 1950, giving rise to much newer areas that have been constructed since. It remains this parish's biggest area though.
Located along the edge of the River Amber, this one has more than a few things to throw at us, from very different periods of history. It takes a bit of wrapping your head around too to work out exactly why there are so many buildings here too which have been abandoned or repurposed. One thing that hasn't though would be the Printing Press on New Street which publishes almost anything related to dogs!
This one took me some time to throw together. Watch it, you'll see why. This is SHIRLAND AND HIGHAM.

    SHIRLAND AND HIGHAM ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - To get to 'The Blocks' you would go down what is now the industrial estate, turning left down a little path to where a brook is located. They were on the land on the other side of the brook
    - Close to St Leonards church is an area that I didn’t walk around - a residential area which includes Park Lane, Main Road and St Leonard’s Place
    - In Stonebroom, speeding is a common issue. However, there’s a lack of people willing to operate speed cameras

Hi. I used to live in Stonebroom till I left in 1995. I used to drink in all those pubs shown.
I personally knew Doug of the Wellington in Shirland and Mave of the Woolpack..those posts u shown, they were gate posts to the farmers fields as pit lane and it's surroundings were all fields behind the Welly, the lane went through them to the pit.
Nice to see the Red Lion still open, it always was a busy pub..the place has changed a lot since I left. The health centre u shown I lived literally round the corner on Julia Crescent and I went to Stone broom Primary. The shop u shown was always known as Jazz's shop..opposite the Star Pub was a shop that a guy called Billy ran, it was a sweet shop..does Trev still run the Star Pub?

The person who ran the Star a few years ago was a woman called Rita, She ran it with her husband who I can’t remember the name of. Unfortunately she became sick a few years ago and the Star closed down

Unfortunately a few years ago the owner of the Star, a woman called Rita, became ill and was unable to continue running it. She still lives there, but the pub has remained closed since
