  • Time for another former industrial and mining settlement, and this one owes its very existence to what it stands on - and I’m not talking about coal! The most famous associate here was George Stephenson. As we’ll discover in a short while, without Stephenson, this would not be what it is today.
He would form a company and build more than 400 miners' cottages, set up elementary schools and consecrate new churches. The company provided the town with almost all its energy needs in gas and electricity. But why would he do so? The answer lies with the railway boom of the 1800s.
The North Midland Railway drove a tunnel under the settlement which would lead to town becoming what it is today. George Stephenson discovered both coal and iron in vast quantities thanks to the tunnel, and because of these incredible finds, the area became a boom town, and the population soared immeasurably.
When you walk the streets here you struggle to comprehend that under your feet is a mile long tunnel that carries a railway line underneath the entire settlement. The northern railway portal is of a magnificent Moorish design. The Southern portal is inaccessible on foot.
So what are those strange structures like that we see at the beginning of this video? Walk around with me and you’ll find out. Welcome to CLAY CROSS.

    CLAY CROSS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - The place that looks like a working mens club at 4:30 is actually the Rykneld Turnpyke, home of the Instant Karma Brewing Co.
    - Halfway down Thanet Street, between Clay Cross and Danesmoor, was where the Bolsover MP Dennis Skinner used to live.
    - Big Jim's Steakhouse used to be a pub called The Cannon.

Thank you for a very well researched presentation from an ex pat Clay Cross resident now in New Brunswick Canada. The Victorian pub on John Street was the Egstow working men's club and institute. Across the road stood the Rainbow Cafe transported from the end of Ashover light railway .There was a bowling green too with changing rooms made from an old carriage from that railway.
The housing estate opposite the Institute is built on the previous cricket pitch and football grounds which were used by the teams of the Clay Cross company.

After seeing you in the Guardian, I'm now watching some old episodes, and think they are great! I especially love seeing the churches, and that old base of the original clay cross was fascinating! Thank you so much from this very homesick expat!

I'm not sure if I have mixed up Clay Cross and Pilsley, but in the early 70s when I was at Tibby secondary school, we did for a time go to a swimming baths for swimming lessons, which was an old basic and frankly, rough building with changing cubicles around the side of the pool. Does anyone remember where this could have been? Also, I do remember a farrier working from Thannet Street at that time, number 40 I think, can't recall his name though?

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 роки тому

I think its more likely Clay Cross than Pilsley...unless you're thinking of Morton with the pit baths?

The building around 8:00, was the Danesmoor Miner’s Welfare.
I was born and raised in Danesmoor and have many happy memories from growing up there.
No mention of the Rent Strike from the early 70s though. There’s a memorial off Bridge Street and it was a huge part of Clay Cross history.

It has been other things too, but I can’t really remember what. On a side note my dad has wrote several books on local history and is a keen historian of North East Derbyshire, he’s got a tonne of local knowledge, i’m going to show him ur videos because I think he will enjoy them, if u notice my name crop up again i’m not a stalker I just think he’ll have something to say or share, but his lack of tech ability will mean i have to do it :)

It was originally the King's Head, next building up was The Prince Of Wales and then the Queens Head just over the brow on the other side of the road.
