Fun fact - the background music for this scene, composed by Elmer Bernstein, is from his score for the 1956 film "The Ten Commandments". Henry Wilcoxon, who plays the bishop, had a significant supporting role in that film as the top general in the pharaoh's army.
WOW!!! I definitely recognized the music as being from, "The Ten Commandments" but I had absolutely no idea that the actor playing the Bishop was actually in that film!!! That's an amazing fact!! Well recognized, Cliff!
@@wangson I live in L.A. and many years back, knowing he was on his way to address a screening of a film he'd scored, I was able to intercept Elmer Bernstein outside the venue and get his autograph on an album cover. It was the soundtrack for "Thoroughly Modern Millie", for which he won his only Academy Award. ( The tricky part was recognizing Elmer Bernstein by sight ).
@@cliffchristie5865 Oh man! That's awesome!
I know! It's perfect!!
@@cliffchristie5865 Those are interesting facts, Cliff! Thanks for sharing!
“I don’t think the heavy stuffs gonna start coming down for quite a while.”
Lol the look on bill Murrays face lol
My brother and I were on our high school golf team, and we were playing a sectional tournament and it started pouring down rain when we got around the 16th or 17th hole, and the officials were saying they were gonna call it, and my brother dropped that line on them and I said "the Good Lord would never disrupt the best game of my life" and the officials absolutely lost it.
Jake Day That’s awesome! 😆
I don't know how many times I have joked and used this same line whenever I experienced a heavy downpour, many times right on a golf coarse. One time my playing partner decided to play through with about 15 holes left to play. The course we were playing, which was typically free of water hazards, wound up with several WH's on each hole! Fortunately there was no electrical storm involved that would have mandated us to return to the clubhouse. A day to remember for sure. "Oh, rat's farts!"
Out of all of the great lines in this film, for some reason this one really gets me
Pure comic genius! The good Lord would never interrupt the greatest game of my life and the rain increases 500% Bill Murray's look while he's being dragged through a typhoon to play golf topped off with the score from the Ten Commandments
Henry Wilcoxon, the Bishop was Pentaur, the Pharaoh's Captain of the guards, in "The Ten Commandments." He was also Marc Anthony in Cecil B DeMille's 1934 epic, "Cleopatra." I have only seen parts of "Caddyshack" in the last 35 years, but it was great to watch this clip and mentally stumble onto the music. I try to watch Heston, Yul Brynner, Yvonne DeCarlo and E.G. Robinson each year that it airs on network TV.
Carl sneaking away like he did something wrong at the end is just perfect.
At least the guy went out in a blaze of glory
Since he's not supposed to touch him, he didn't know what to do. So he split
He told him to keep going. Lol
I still quote Carl everytime I'm out in bad weather. "I don't think the heavy stuff is gonna come down for quite a while".... Said while standing in a monsoon.
Caddyshack is probably the most quoted movie in history.
The Score from The Ten Commandments makes this scene all the funnier
hero of thyme made even funnier in that Henry Wilcoxon was in The Ten Commandmemts. 😊
@@SmashedBottleMan Ohhhhh you're right! He's the master builder!
@@Diggy7Diggs Hiram Abiff is the master builder
@@rolfstamenov9914 I just read it was actually Vincent Price :(
It's funny?
This sequence is comedic genius. Certainly one if the best in filmmaking history!
The priest is so underrated
...and Carl gently puts down the marker and slips away into the night. HILARIOUS!!!
but he ran away w/out taking his scythe blade from the bag @0:09
@@eljefescientist5726 didn’t wanna get struck himself
Aw, rat farts!!!
This scene was obviously a tribute by Elmer Bernstein to Cecille B. DeMille for this Ten Commandments scored sequence....Henry Wilcoxon was discovered by DeMille to play Marc Antony way back in 1934 and became the associate producer on the Ten Commandments...This must have been curious to moviegoers who didn't get the reference to this.
That and he was in the movie
Ramis was a GENUIS! Knew the script had almost no Carl but also knew a comedic genius was playing him & squeezed every second he could from the part!!
CARL! BFM chive on Taylor tot
Certainly your eminency. Certainly your excellence!! Ladies & Gentlemen Bill Murray
Magnificence
We all knew Murray’s a comic genius. The bishop doesn’t get the credit he’s due! I believe he was a very respected character actor that DeMille and such would use often
This scene is why Harold Ramis sought Henry Wulcoxon out to be in Caddy Shack. Its supposed to be a spoof of a DeMille movie. Even uses the same music from the Ten Commandments
@@rstoneburn How much you want to bet Wilcoxon laughed himself silly when Ramis bounced the idea off him?
This scene gave me one of my best laughs of all time! I had tears running down my cheeks! Genius film making.
As a guy who has a grandfather who has always loves to golf and would probably do similar, this gives me happy tears😭
The setting, the score, the actors, it’s all just so perfect
This scene still cracks me up. What a hilarious film.
Just today I realized that the Bishop yells, "Oh Rat Farts" at god when his last putt misses!
People were howling with laughter in the theater when he shouted this line.
I use that line virtually every time I play. Haven’t been struck down once.
A few hours,, after, consuming the Bishop, one Gopher says, to the other: "Pull my Paw. Let me turn around, so as my Gosphincter, is in your face. What does the smell remind you of?" Gopher #2 replies: "Oh. Rat Farts."
"There is no God"
@@markread7333 BRILLIANT!!! Hope you don't mind, but I've definitely got to steal that one!
I love the part when the frog jumps out of the hole.
Not gonna lie. I was at my job and on a break, and I was just chilling watching a drainpipe and it was raining really hard. A couple of frogs came up out of the drain gasping, and I lol'd. Because I remember that.
Bishop: “The good Lord would never disrupt the best game of my life”
The good Lord: proceeds to monsoon all over Pickering and Carl.
The best part of this is the fact the music is from the movie "The Ten Commandments." Glorious.
The face Murray makes when bishop tells him he’s infallible is just classic
I know, it's hilarious.
Catholic overtone to this film.
The best punch line to this whole scene is later when he's at the bar and says "There is no god."
I don't see you walkin
When he says "There is no God" its my favorite scene in the movie.
All time classic scene with the Ten Commandments music!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
When that frog jumps out of the hole, it kills me...
"oh RAT FARTS" took me DECADEs to make out the Bishop's 'curse' just before the lightning struck.
Same here.
He secretly said "Rat farts!" when he was about to be swept away from the Red Sea during The Ten Commandments . 🤫🤭😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff is gonna come down for a while."
Legend has it, he still putting in the cloud.
I'm infallible young fella!
I love the Ten Commandments musical theme to this scene in which Henry Wilcoxon was in. They wanted Wilcoxon to play the Archbishop in Ghostbusters (some sort of tie in to Bill Murray and Wilcoxon) Wilcoxon wasn't able to do, so they went with Tom McDermott, who kind of resembles Wilcoxon.
1:33 always slays me, the music, my man determined to finish it out in a flippin' hurricane lmao... reminds me of my Dad who years ago would be like, "The weather is fine... c'mon...." And every neighbor nearby would be looking out their window at my family like we were insane cleaning up the yard in a downpour/storm, lol.
Bill breaking the fourth wall at 1:29 always gets me.
😂😂😂😂
"There's a force in the universe that makes things happen." - Ty Webb. 'So many great lines from Caddy Shack.
His laugh is amazing
Literally, like your best round ever, you are like questioning if you have to be grateful to someone or something. But you have to ignore that, because once you do, it's over.
He died doing what he loved 😅
This scene is comedy perfection. I saw when I was 12 a knew how hilarious and genius it was even at that young age😂
"Excellency...fiddlesticks!....My name's FRED!"🤣😂😅
You're not a man you're a Bishop for God sakes!!
There is a God - and his sense of humour is deadly !
“Fiddlesticks! My name’s Fred-I’m a man just the same as you!”
“You’re a bishop, for God sakes!” 🤣
“There is no God”. Often how I feel playing golf 🤣
Heh, the late great Henry Wilcoxon, ladies and gentlemen. Awesome character actor and "my good friend DeChabrillaine"!
Damn, he was in A LOT of classic movies way before this one. And yes, I consider this movie a classic.
You know Carl will tell this story to young caddies for the rest of his life, and no one will believe him just like the Dali Lama story 😅
Carl inspires me
1:32, impossible to know if Carl is overjoyed or incensed. Either scenario is hilarious!! Only Bill Murray
best scene in the whole movie, and this movie had many great scenes.
Absolutely love this sequence!! 😂😂😂
Great British actor Henry Wilcoxon
Love the scene later when the Bishop, now bitter and drunk, says, "Excellency! Fiddlesticks! My name's Fred and I'm just a man, same as you. There is no God."
1:54 Ohhhhhhh.... RAT FARTS!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No matter his age... still the most gorgeous man in film history. Even in real life, had the heart of a lion.
I love the look on Bill Murray's face, (1:26) when he looks at the camera and reacts to the Bishop suggesting, "I'm infallible young fella...."!!!
" Never ask a Navy man if he wants another drink, because it's nobody's goddamn business how many drinks he's had already"............
Bill Murray just leaves him there!🤣😜🤪👍😎👌😊
Now that's what i call an "Act Of God". ⛈️
Throw your golf bag at somebody, ok, follow me. Let’s go!
Outstanding
Best zatire of epic bicblical movies.
I'd keep playing, I don't think the heavy stuff is gonna come down in quite awhile.
One of the greatest quotes in movie history!
Bill Murray was channeling a bit of Benny Hill there for a moment.
Pride before the fall
1:56 He’s a Highlander🤣🤣🤣🤣
Or he's about to turn into the Marine like in that commercial from back in the day. You know what they say the few the proud the Marines 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲😎😎😎
“Right away your emellecy”
Certainry your emerencsy
Man, God REALLY didn't want the bishop to play that game.
He's also in the Spalding scene "You gonna eat your fat?" He was the voice of reason then.
Not one person recognizes the Bishop/Pastor? He was one of the most famous actors of the early 1930’s he coproduced movies with Cecil B DeMille. His name is Henry Wilcoxon. He played another man of the cloth as the Vicar in the Best Picture of 1942, Mrs. Miniver. His movie ending soliloquy moved both Churchill and FDR.
He was in Scaramouche also! 😊
I laughed so damn hard at this scene when I saw it for the first time
Caddyshack had me laughing so hard, tears came...
@@HardRockMaster7577 same 😂
I love how the bishop keeps golfing as the storm becomes a gale and than an all out hurricane.
OOOH RATFARTS!!!! 🌩
This happened to me today. I finished a round during a severe storm and shot 41.
I could have sworn he said goddammit when i saw this on tv back in 83....would have made more sense getting hit by lightning. Still funny scene though.
Sure, but if you watched DeMillis’ *The Ten Commandments* , the actor Henry Wilcoxon played a character named Pentaur who (I think, don’t quote me on this) was killed by the Red Sea. I think he muttered the same phrase when God smited him in that film, just like He did here.
Heavy thunderstorm outside right now easton pa. This is hype snd scary
The great Henry Wilcoxon
He left him!
Lmao
He left him laying there!
🤣🤣🤣
The good lord doesn't like it when tempted . Lol
1:56 "I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Such a good scene 😂
bishop's demonic laugh
I’d keep playing…🤣🤣
Bill's a genius.
The best part of this scene is the crazy wind and rain when they're walking up the hill. Hilarious.
That's the way I wanna go. Having my best game ever!
The song in the background is from The 10 Commandments, isn't it?
1:56 He became a wizard.
"RAT FARTS!!!...".
Hey this reminds me of my workplace too! ....😃😃 😂😂😂😂
I forgot he was only playing 9
How is this movie already 45 years old?
Going to be 45 in July 2025
You have to wonder if this was the inspiration for the scene:
"If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron."
Lee Trevino quote, made after an incident during the 1975 Western Open at Butler National in Oak Brook, Illinois, where Lee Trevino was standing on the 13th green. But suddenly, as the rain started pouring down; he opened an umbrella. However, along with rain, lightning struck Trevino and left him unconscious.
Technically, it was his "best" round.
Not his "final".
That came later at the bar during 'Last Call'.
🤣🤣
The greatest Catholic movie ever made.
And thus he experienced the quickening and because a Highlander.
“OH RAT FARTS”!!!!!
And remember the next night at the club when he said, "There izzz no Godddd"
Henry Wilcoxon, who played the bishop, goes all the back to vaudeville and the silent film industry.
The bishop was in movie Ben Hur.
AWWWWW! RAT FARTS!!!
Pentuar from The Ten Commandants 🤣🤣🤣🤣
1:52 RAT FARTS
Isn't amazing a bishop would walk the course instead using a golf cart
Jonah Hill is playing Rodney Dangerfield in the remake. And will Ferrell is the holy gofurrrr
