- App stores are central to how we use our smartphones. If you’re on Android you probably get all your apps from the Google Play Store, and if you’re on iOS you get your apps from the Apple App store. But there’s a catch: to access these app stores, you first have to sign in to an account. It links your app activity to a single identity and is a big privacy concern.
In this video we give you two options for more privacy-preserving app stores that you can use instead when you download apps to your phone.

Just as another incentive to get GrapheneOS: I charged my Pixel 7 pro to 90% almost 48 hours ago. With my normal use (including a night on call where I used the phone more than I normally do since I was awake all night) my battery is now at 52%. Insane how much battery the bloatware and tracking is using in the background.

Thanks a lot Naomi for sharing this info! it would be great to have a video in order to know how to disable many Android background apps. I tried using a firewall, however many use GPS, sharing location, nearby location... as a consquence, if we disable some from Google, Gmail stops working.

What are your thoughts on the security concerns of the F-Droid App (which can be avoided with Droid-icy or Neo Store) and the F-Droid Repository itself. From what I have heard there have been multiple problems in the past....the way apps are signed for example isn't perfect.
Naomi - I was hoping to see alternatives to the Apple Store. Perhaps, when Apple Allows third party App Stores, you can do another video on that?

I believe the security issues out way the privacy issues of the Google play store when using Graphene. I believe I can create a relatively private experience using the play store on Graphene. With the threat level based on allowing companies to know me but not track or build a dossier.
I think we often close up one vulnerability while opening up another one.
Everything is relative but that doesn't mean there are no thresholds. The apps you install through playstore still builds a dossier.
I agree with the idea of opening new vulnerabilities trying to close ones.
New GOS user here. Seems the app stores other than Google are somewhat shady.
I find it telling that GOS apps has Google play store in the list to install.
I don’t like getting a download link direct from a website for an App Store.
I think I’ll stick with play store but still have the GOS privacy features

Can a goggle 7 pro work for graphene os?
I help run Bliss OS (an Android based desktop OS for PC's), and our FOSS versions of Bliss OS and Android-x86 both come with these alternatives.

Do bliss roms have device fingerprinting protection? Like aurora store's spoofing of the device id?. Reporting a different device name than "Bliss OS for PC"
Is it possible to spoof sensors, camera, radios, location & networks (cell/wifi), etc like correllium does? These can be very useful for dev & security testing. There's currently a gap in the market for a foss self hosted solution like correllium testing.
Google has recently started blocking anonymous login sessions on Aurora store. Naomi, do you believe it would be just as safe to sign into Aurora with a throwaway Google account?
The reason it's broken is google breaking microg to break UA-cam vanced, which subsequently breaks this app store💀
I use graphene os now but if I wanted a phone with a headphone jack and a micro sd card I would go with a Motorola g52 with calyxos

What do you think about running Google Play in Sandbox mode through Graphene OS?
Perhaps the most secure app store next to graphene's own.
Graphene prioritizes security over privacy, meaning you're less likely to get hacked using SB Gplay than fdroid because fdroid left some app un-updated or had their priv keys leaked or build server hacked.
But still you'll have to deal with gplay analytics (limited) tied to your account.

Aurora store is broken for me. Search feature doesn't work for months already, so it's nearly impossible to download apps that already own and purchased. I am forced to use Google Play Store on my de-googled phone [insert ANGRY FACE here]. Aurora store used to be 'good' but not right now. F-Droid is good but it's NOT a google store replacement.
What about in two years I want to watch Netflix, Disney and all the streaming service. I must sideroad. On iPhone And a verb or want to play a game almost also sidenote, because no, there’s no game on e Apple store. And what about security if Netflix only allowed so loading it is safe.

The phone collecting data is wrong, its the google play services and Graphene OS might be a good option if you have a pixel phone but for everyone else i would rather recommend Lineage OS with microg or, if your device is supported /e/ OS.
Dont use individual apps just use browsers. Which is technically an application but i have a lot more control over forefox on youtube than the app etc.

While I'm considering switching to GrapheneOS, I'm not sure about apps and if I'll find all I need. Mostly banking apps
A great low pressure way to do this is to buy a second phone that can take GrapheneOS.
I've been able to take my procrastinating time, and not worry about screwing things up.
You can find all google play apps on Aurora
Installed Aurora and searched for the apps. Can find them, but there are sooo many trackers listed and most of them depend on "Google play". I assume for notifications
What about alternative app stores to The App Store for IOS users
Man I feel silly staying in a Samsung android system that already harvesting my data then complain about using "playstore". They own from the front and the back. Maybe in future if I bought a pixel I'll give this a serious go.

The Aurora store has been having a lot of problems off late. Search doesn't work anymore
You just have to use the technique that we mentioned, and find the apps using the google play link. Let us know if you have issues setting that up!

@@NaomiBrockwellTV Aurora has a bunch of bugs like that. But perhaps the most crucial is it's ToS & priv policy are subject to change without prior notice & don't require explicit user consent. It uses the same consent on usage that big tech uses They also log ip addr for rate limiting.

Brave has always used Bing for their image search. Now they offer you the choice of using Bing or Google and make it explicit that those searches are not handled by them.

What about LineageOS vs GrapheneOS, can speak about that?
The main problem with both is that only a very limited selection of devices is supported, and they tend to be the higher-specification models.
i had used UA-cam alternative pipe, an open source software for a while, its horrible and buggy..
Damn was going to give Graphene-Os a go, but it's not compatible with samsung devices 😒.. pixel devices only
I'm making the switch. Once the Pixel 9 launches, I'll be looking for a deal on a Pixel 8 Pro. Once found, I'm installing GrapheneOS.

Graphene needs to support the galaxy devices.
They dont have the security chip that is in the pixel phones and samsung phones have a locked bootloader so that can't install a custom rom
@@Flashbrickanimations "the security chip" is within the SoC package. It's a coproc or hsm. Samsung phones have knox security chip.
The issue is NOT, I repeat NOT a locked bootloader that 90% of you mistake. The issue is lack of a bootloader that supports *verified boot with a custom rom*.
We're hinging our entire privacy & security on one lineup of phones (pixel) which not only isn't available to the majority of the world but also has bootloader locked skus like verizon pixels.

Ignore the rate limited message. Don't use the search feature, go through the steps in the video for opening all google play links in aurora, and instead of searching for apps, go to them via their website

Just tried downloading the fdroid app, only for it to be blocked from installation as it says the app was built for an older version of Android & doesn't include the latest privacy protections! 😏

Open question to anyone:
My Aurora store keeps giving me the message "Oops, This account is rate limited." The only course of action I've been able to find to remedy this is to wait it out because I've had too many attempted sign-ins. However, I've waited for several days now and I keep getting the same message. Any suggestions to get around this would be most appreciated.

F-Droid doesn't seem to have a huge number of apps.
I used the Google play store and got a virus, had to pay to get it removed.
I just watched a video where a network engineer looked into how Google's malicious site detection worked and the main takeaway was that Google is everywhere. Lots of sites use Google services in the background, mainly it seems by using (linking to) Google-supplied fonts... 😱

Just one problem when using Aurora store... The App Search has not been working for at least two weeks!
The official Play Store has the people and resources to properly maintain and secure the Apps quickly while Aurora simply can't keep up with issues in a timely manner. Just something for consideration.
Yep just use the workaround I mentioned in the video and all google play links will open in Aurora! Their search function was never great to begin with
