Even before the arrival of the Spaniards, a passion for singing finally developed. Filipinos like singing when they are working, such as on the farm to get rid of their fatigue and the heat of the sun, or the ladies singing while doing their laundry in the river. Filipinos adore karaoke because singing has become popular in the country, regardless of whether you have a good voice or not, especially during celebrations for singing competitions in the cities. Anyone and anything in the west or anywhere else has nothing to do with our natural desire to sing. Fact is, long before we invented karaoke, we already have this traditional courtship manner we call "harana," where the man, using a guitar sings a love song to the lady he's courting, just outside her residence, mostly at evenings. It's been our custom, our tradition. Most of our OPMs which garnered world recognition and captures the hearts of everyone who hears it, speaks of love towards our country, our people, our family. We sing NOT because of fame or anything else. We sing because we were born with it, the great desire to sing for the Lord's glory, for our homeland, our people. As you may have noticed already, we are the only nation in the world with that innate desire and capability to do so, anytime, anywhere. Which makes me believe that we truly are the people GOD pre-destined to sing new songs for His glory upon His return 😇🤍❤️🕊️💝

Yeah, it's all fun and games until someone requests the song "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. Then it's every man for himself. The reason people, especially boomers and those from the working class older generation who are not familiar with the music of the younger generation, fought over the microphone over this song back in the 90s was because it is the easiest male song that can be sung. The key is low enough and the lyrics simple to remember. Any guy wanting to impress the ladies in public would want to pick this one. And if someone beat you to the draw and somehow murdered the song by singing off key in his drunken state, then you have a recipe for chaos inside a packed drinking joint.

Maybe the world is not yet ready. Southeast Asia as a group really, is new globally (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos). I lived in 3 of those countries and they have their own songs which sound very pop and modern but appeal only to a local audience. The Filipinos just stand out because we communicate in English and that is why the West can understand the Filipinos quickly. But culturally, Filipinos are still Southeast Asian - the same way Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, etc, are.
Try searching for original Filipino compositions, English and Filipino lyrics, they sell really well locally. A lot of Filipino composers who have had successful careers.
