  • Hi all,
In this video, I continue from the Part 1 (Exercise Machine) video that I created on this small lathe back in the summer. There, I demonstrated stripping an exercise vibrating machine and described how I plan to utilise its digital components for my small lathe for improved speeds and variability.
Here, I turn down an aluminium pulley to match a narrow SPZ 10mm V belt. After this I made a stainless bushing and pressed it into the pulley to allow it to fit snuggly onto the small 8mm shaft. A bearing housing bracket still needs to be formed at this stage to support the motors shaft. This is to ensure that the tightening (excessive forces) of the belt does not affect the motor’s internals during normal operations. Moreover, this video is focused on the design and manufacture of the sliding motor linkage/bracket that sits below the (Exercise Machine’s) DC motor. All components are created out of 304 stainless steels.
Over the next couple of weeks, I will be continuing to add the mechanical linkages and the electrical controls that will pre-tension the belt once a mechanical gear is selected using the sliding motor mount seen in the video. Multiple modifications will be developed to the little linear screw motor to create an electrical like ram.
The mechanical linkages and the electrical system of the belt pre-tensioner will work together with the quick linkage mechanism to allow the switch between gears in an instant during workloads.
Also, various other features (guard protectors) will be added to protect the user’s fingers from the high-speed gears with a customised stainless-steel enclosure for the exercise machine’s control panel. Moreover, a new frame/stand with swivel castors will be fabricated up to allow ease of access and to aid mobility of the machine in my workplace.
Existing features will be kept, such as the large flywheel pulley even though it won’t be functioning no more. The entire lathe will be repainted using a tough enamel paint with a new additional quick change tool post vice clamp.
Please see Tony Griffiths article in the link below for a more detailed explanation of these small but incredible lathes.

    I hope everyone enjoys.
    Thank you, Jeffrey
