    I took a psychobiology course recently in college and my profesor who, not to discredit you, has a phd in human biology differs with you on sugar. It is definitely addictive and causes withdrawal symptoms similar to caffeine. :)

      Hey Amy ! Love hearing different perspectives and I’m sure he/she/they is very intelligent. I would love to see the specific sources as I have multiple degrees and work specifically in nutrition. Yet I’m totally fine to be wrong. As far as caffeine , it actually blocks a specific receptor (adenosine) which sugar doesn’t.
      I do agree people with addictive personalities can also be addicted to a specific foods(not just sugar) . I just haven’t seen the research showing it’s actually addictive for the general public. I do agree people gravitate to hyper palatable foods which are high fat and carbs. Hope this helps clear any miscommunication

      I think sugar and coffee are definitely addictive

      The human runs primarily on glucose, which is a sugar. So that alone is enough to make it quite different than caffeine

      Sugar is addictive haha I can speak from experience

  • @REIDOPLANETA

    I was watching this until the mention of sugar not being addictive. Sugar triggers a dopamine response, as I'm well aware you're aware, and thus making it a rewarding experience for most people.
    Rewarding experiences inherently reinforces behaviors, which in turn make it more prone to ________.

      Thank you Tiago for sharing your thoughts! And there is a lot of truth to your statement. Yet I would argue enjoyment does not equate to addiction. If more people just ate a bowl of sugar vs high sugar/fat foods than I may agree more. Yet saying sugar is addictive is actually creating a negative loop in the brain where people then over consume and go through the binge/restrict cycle. If you are open to it , I recommend secrets from the eating lab by traci mann that digs deeper into the brain and food 😃 thank you for your comment!

    Lol I had a harder time quitting sugar than nicotine (8 years) and caffeine

    • @Nicolehoskens
      @Nicolehoskens  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for sharing ! To be fair sugar is just a carbohydrate which a a macronutrient that humans need to live. The goal isn’t to quit sugar but minimize the intake of added sugar.
      Also Congratulations quitting nicotine that is a very difficult thing for a lot of people , major props! 🎉

      @@Nicolehoskens Thank you for the reply. I meant mostly cut out my intake of refined sugars. Although just a carb, research has show it still has the ability to affect neurotransmitter pathways as drugs would. Would be interesting if future research could compare natural vs refined sources and see what results that yields.

      Hey Omar ! Any health promoting behavior I am totally on board with, and increasing Whole Foods in your diet is always a good thing. Yes I’ve read those studies and they are often not discussed , usually shared for click bait and not explaining what it actually means. I would love to do videos on explaining the research articles and will think about how to make those entertaining, so thank you for that suggestion! 😊
      I am always intrigued by how our brains interact with food,and I can tell you are too! I highly suggest reading Secrets from the eating lab: science of weight loss by Traci Mann. It’s crazy how our brain perceives eating

    You definitely have withdrawals when you stop consuming sugar; it's worst quitting sugar than weed.

    • @Nicolehoskens

      Hey frank thanks for adding to the conversation, I know this is a controversial one for many people but want to specify something. Habits vs addictions are two different things. Breaking a habit can be a different thing to do, decreasing ones consumption of high quick carbohydrates/high fat items may be difficult to do , but there isn’t any withdrawal symptoms. I am not discrediting people’s craving or urges to reach the higher sugary/fatty foods as that can be difficult and frustrating to overcome.
      If you have any credible , peer reviewed articles showing withdrawal from glucose/sugar molecules I will be happy to read them 😊

      @@Nicolehoskens The only peer reviewed article I could find is this one www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2235907/.
      I find it interesting that most article's would tell you to reduce your intake of sugar; but would not demonize the sugar industry. Which obviously tells me; they are a very powerful industry; who will go after you if you speak badly about them; they'll show up with 50 lawyers. They have a history of manipulating the consumer into believing sugar is good for you. They have very powerful allies in government. In a way they are untouchable like the meat industry etc.

      I appreciate your thoughts and thanks for the article. I still don’t agree with being addicted to sugar for the majority of humans , which the article also says. I can’t take that word away from people who have struggled with other addictions and then go to food. That is something I do not personally have experience with. It is a multifaceted subject . I also understand some people are fearful of bigger companies and conglomerates, I look at the bigger picture.
      I also want to make people fell empowered by their choices and “addiction ” is a word I have seen take away people’s view of control. Again thanks for the paper and perspective 😊

    I don’t know that it’s addictive, but it definitely does cause withdrawal when you completely remove it from your diet. By removing it, I mean reading every single label making everything from scratch and not having any forms of sugar. I experienced it. I cleanse my body of all sugars in any form, and then I broke my cleanse and ate three pieces of Mentos candy the next day at work I walked down the stairs, got to the bottom of the landing and my body just collapsed. I didn’t pass out, I didn’t black out, but my body completely gave out with no warning and for no reason. It was a form of withdrawal.

    • @Nicolehoskens
      @Nicolehoskens  Рік тому

      I’m glad to hear you are ok! I would def say to talk to a doctor or dietitian when you are restricting that much because it sounds more like an electrolyte abnormality from restricting your diet so much. Our bodies do need the macronutrient carbohydrate which can come in forms of fruits, veggies, whole grains, added and natural sugars. Passing out isn’t a sign of withdrawal but more under-eating or electrolytes regulation 💕 thank you so much for watching! Hope that doesn’t happen again bc it is very scary
