Damn dood! I'm laying in bed watching this video and my back is telling me, "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!" .... Well, I am 59 now so I think I'll listen to my body and just watch others get hurt. It musta been a BLAST!!!!
I just came home from England yesterday and one of the boys from our group participated in this, which was the talk of our group the rest of the trip. He only came away with scratches luckily.
I have previously been a medic at this and probably will be again, without the catchers we would almost certainly have a fatality every year, we give them some basic training on casualty handling and there are normally at least four medics on the side of the hill, quite often at least two of them are on ropes anchored at the top with a rescue stretcher for rope rescues should the need arise, I have been one of the rope rescue medics plenty of times and we can actually run down on ropes face first or backwards depending upon where the casualty is, if they are towards the bottom we run down face first and climb back up, if they are further up we go down backwards with a lot more control, but if someone needs stretchering from the top they will sometimes get the 'express ride' we can cover the slope on ropes in fifteen seconds at our absolute fastest!
We have tried to teach them to soft catch but we only have about three hours to train them and we can't train on coopers hill so we train elsewhere which unfortunately isn't as steep, the guys who have been doing it for a while learn the art of a soft catch but the newer ones haven't learnt that yet and tend to resort to what they normally do, we try to teach them to move backwards as they catch the runner to reduce the impact but that often goes out of the window with adrenaline, we are trialling a few other options for the future!
No, whatever gets used needs to be able to be moved easily and the problem with mattress foam is you can't really get a good enough grip on memory foam and a spring mattress is a big no no, we have tried a net similar to those found on some ski slopes but there is no where to anchor it safely, the best method so far is a rugby team, but they are meant to sort of jog backwards when they catch the runners to minimise injuries but it is not always possible especially when you consider that you can potentially have thirty people coming down, but if they are unconscious a net is not an option, there is no great option and to be honest I'm surprised we don't have really major injuries every year, but the hospital does tend to put extra staff on in a&e and the major trauma unit for the cheese rolling!
Invented by king Richard the 3rd in 1674 after being inspired by a group of villagers who’s wagon full of goods tipped on top of a hill. A single wheel of expensive cheese went rolling down the hill and the villagers ran after it, tumbling, rolling, breaking bones on the way down

The guy in the green t-shirt copped and a hammering, then a small collision towards the end..like he needed that !! haha
As a Scotsman, I can proudly say you'd never see us do the daft things the English would go and do...
What like wearing a skirt with no underwear or throwing giant logs into the air

This is Glasgow on a Saturday afternoon. All off tumbling down the chippie for a deep fried Mars bar after a morning on the Buckfast and Evo stik.
What about trying to go independent despite having no money
Hmm
I'm from Seattle and he makes me proud.
I can only imagine the disclaimer you have to sign before doing this is quite long. 😀
Now this looks like a fun time. Great to see people can have some frivolous fun...
Swiss-flag-shirt-girl faceplanted hard at 3:30
Kudos for doing an interview after.
I bet the Orthopedic surgeons in the area love this event lol. We should have that here in the U.S. for EBT cards. If you want your card run down the hill after it.
Green-shirt guy at 0:42 was the best tumbler by far
You can see deliberate transitions into smooth rolling
Oh my god. Why haven’t I ever seen this before? Those people are nuts. I love them! How do I do this and where do,I sign up?!?!
Just when I think people couldn’t be ANY dumber… they go and do something like this… and TOOOTALLY redeem themselves!!😃
This event makes a lot of sense. To some people.
Maybe they should use a few catching nets (each held by two men) rather than rugby tackles at the end
Regards to the fellow that took a blow to the heart 🌬️ ❤️
Really good footage. Well done.
You go through all that, then get injured by the Safety Guys at the bottom
proud to be British and all those from abroad taking part should be adopted and given British passports.............
2:20 Nikolai Ramn & Mikal Litteraly Made A Episode of their show on doing the race and here they are
Great stuff! The guys who form the "safety net" at the bottom could use those impact cushion pillows they use in NFL practice.
Can't do that. There's traditions to be maintained, and this is England. Pads are not the done thing.
Wheres the fun in that
Nah mate, they're rugby players
Impact pillows are for Pansies.
that hit at 5:18 !! Awesome. They crushed that guy. This is the best sporting event in the world.
