Pivot tables was really confusing for me when we wanted to have a look at different data, but after watching your video I have clearly understood how to analyse the data and get the desired data. The option of calculated field was something new which is really useful. For those having issues with adding the timeline. I’m using the online version so it may be different, but you have to go back to the sales data sheet & format the date column to actual dates. Easy to do, just highlight the column then select “date” from the drop down menu on the home ribbon. Then go back to your pivot table, select “refresh all”- it’ll be all the way over to left of the ribbon. Once refreshed it should work & you can create the timeline.

Hi Kevin, following along your handy pivot table tutorial as a refresher and came across a little issue. Just thought i'd let you know that the date column (E) is no longer formatted as a date in the example linked below resulting in Excel unable to create a timelime. The error message is not really helpful as it states "We cannot create a Timeline for this report because it doesn't have a field formatted as a Date" 😅. Strangely in the current version of Excel that is installed on my PC (Office / Microsoft 365) as of 28.11.22 I don't have the option to add recommended pivot tables in a either an existing worksheet or new worksheet - they are automatically added into a new worksheet 🤷♂. Anyway, subbed! Thank you for the very easy to follow amazing tutorial 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽.
The date column is actually (F): it is still a date. Excel reads the dates as integers. So, to fix this issue, you just select the column F -> right click -> format cells and then choose Date in the Category sidebar. From there you can select the correct date format which is second to last on the list. Second option is in the ribbon of the home tab right next to Wrap Text change General to Short Date. For both options, you have to go to the Data tab and press Refresh All for them to work.
Hi, Kevin! This was really very helpful and easy to follow. I was able to follow all the steps in your video using the Excel workbook except for Insert Timeline and Analyse Data. It kept on saying that there was no field formatted as Date even if there was a column on Date. I also do not have the pivot Analyze Data on my toolbar. 2:25 Removing empty columns & rows: I do that often, and use keyboard (which you _could_ record as a script ;). CTRL-Home sends me to top left. CTRL-→ and another → takes me to first empty column. CTRL-Space marks it, SHIFT-F10 then L deletes it. For rows: CTRL-↓ ↓ SHIFT-Space SHIFT-F10 L.

I was always intimidated and confused while attempting to create a pivot table. This tutorial really put me at ease. The only issue I ran into was when I attempted to create a "timeline", I kept getting an error message that "we can't create a timeline for this report because it doesn't have a field created as date." 😒 Other than that I give this tutorial three thumbs up 👍👍👍
@@wesleybreier4791 I figured it out. You need one of the headers to be date in your original spreadsheet. Only then can you create the timeline iirc. (It's been a month since I did this though)
