Thank you for a wonderful Christmas present. When I watched this video the first time I went out in my own little yard and took pictures of the winter trees there. They are waiting for me to put the holidays away. Now, Christmas morning, I treated myself to another viewing of your video before the house gets crazy. Your quiet voice is a meditative way to start the day. I'm hoping your wife is doing well, recovering nicely. And I hope you are, too. The Good Lord knows it is often just as hard for family, especially spouses, when they watch their loved one struggle. Peace be with you, and Merry Christmas!

I love trees in spring after a rain that turns the trees & branches very dark just as they're about to leaf out. That very pale green of the just emerging leaves & dark wood is a beautiful contrast. Thanks for all you share.

Oh, Steve, one of my two favorite subjects, birds and trees!!!! What a Christmas gift you have given me!! Thanks so much. I will watch this one several times, and I have learned so much from it about watching the way the branches grow. I love to study tree branches, too. I hope you and your dear wife and family have a very blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. God bless you all, and thank you for your wonderful teaching. You will never know how much you mean to this old painter down in Savannah!

All of your videos are so fantastic and I'm learning so much! I've always loved the patterns of leafless branches against the sky in Winter. I haven't been able to successfully express what I'm seeing before now. I bought a rigger and it practically paints the branches itself! Your instruction makes watercolor painting a lot less overwhelming for me. Thank you so much!

I'm a beginner drawer. Trees are fascinatingto me. However in the summer, they're all big lumps, hard to tell where the branches are. This is the first winter after I started to draw and boy, all the tree branches are so interesteting and unique. Like you said in the video, I take photos of them and try to use them as refereences. Thanks a million for this wonderful video! Peace!

I love your branch studies. I was thinking that your studies would look nice with the whole page framed and hung for people to see. It is a great example of how a number of small sketches can be used to make a completed work of art.

Merry Christmas, Steve. This video is a special present to me. Bless you. I love figure drawing, painting but I’ve moved far out in a rural area and have run low out of money for gas and drawing meet ups. Can’t go to the coffees shop to draw people. So now I’m doing the trees and landscape. I really love it! I love the beauty of the trees and trying to capture it. Landscapes are new for me. Plus I follow my cats around and try to draw them while they are moving. Also the sheep and chickens. 😄

Enjoyed your branch studies Steve! Trees are always interesting, most people don't realize that they are essentially "solar collectors" and each species has its own solution as to how to collect the most light. From the trunk to the primary limbs to the secondary branches all the way out to the twigs and leaves each species has a "basic pattern" that it grows to. From what I have seen in art class, I think that people have problems drawing trees because the don't follow any basic pattern and their "generic" trees look "odd". Putting oak branches on a birch trunk or if the fan-out of the twigs is wrong it will not ring true with the viewer - they may not "consciously" know the what is wrong but they will feel something is not right. Kinda like having conflicting light sources or a slightly twisted perspective. Its my favorite time of year to go out and study naked trees :-) ATB Steve! Hank

Wow. I really like how you sketched and used the thumbnail compositions! At first, I didn't understand their purpose. Your branches are beautiful. I love your photos with the greens behind the bare grayish branches - the contrast makes those branches pop. Yep, I have pulled over to take pictures of trees, as well. Last year, "something" told me to photograph a tree at the end of our road - there was nothing really special about it but I took the photo. A bad storm destroyed it about two weeks later. At least, I have a record that it existed. Thanks again, this is an awesome lesson. I don't know what happened but I wish your wife the best. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.

I also love trees in the winter. I took some pictures of interesting structures at the base if the trunk of a tree, just where the large extending branches protrude. The color and texture if the bark were beautiful and interesting. I wish I knew how to create it. This was a nice study. Best wishes to you, your wife and a Merry Christmas, and the Lord's blessings to all.

I've seen people go out with casein and paint plein aire. They say they've been watching too much James Gurney.
After we had a blizzard last week here in Finland, I felt driven to go out with my camera to capture some winter scenes. Particularly for reference. I realised I paid so much attention to all the trees and the branches - how the snow how fallen on them, how the wind had built a snow cover on the wind side and how water hade frozen as drops all over some trees.
I think I've been watching too much Steve Mitchell. :D
