One day, I had no need for new paper. Then, spoke the Mind of Watercolor and suddenly, I need new paper! Not a "want," of course, a "need!" LOL! As for the clouds, they can be a real stumbler for new artists, so your tutorial is a brilliant lesson, as well as a great reminder for experienced painters, as well. I might only add, for new painters, that you may not hit the mark with this the first time. Don't lose hope and just keep trying it over and over! It WILL come! I have some other techniques, which perhaps I'll share in a video at some point, but this is my favorite, by far. Thanks always, Steve! A real treat to watch and great lead on new paper! Cheers! :)

Ba hahaha! I can be a sort of unintentional Pied Piper of art supplies sometimes I guess. I promise you won't drown except maybe in awesome products. Great point on not hitting the mark the first time and trying again. Which leads to my oft repeated phrase, "embrace failure as a teacher." Give yourself permission to fail and judge a successful session more by what you learned than by what you achieved. Thanks guy!

Steve, you were my first teacher, first skies, first everything, and you turned me on to Silver brushes! I have watched so many videos in the past year and a half-many, many. This is the most glorious sky I have ever seen. And, you did it with flat brushes! Thanks so much for this.

This is incredible. Somehow I missed this one when it came out! One of my favorite subjects when I used oil paints was stormy evening scenes. I didn't think watercolor could render or deliver as dramatic of an effect but this proves me wrong.

I see some beautiful cloudy sunsets here in Africa, lots of pinky golds reflecting onto the clouds. I have always loved looking at the vast skies with clouds, I will have a go at painting them now. You make it look so easy but I am sure it takes years of practice. Thank you Steve.

Another great lesson in watercolor clouds. This was brilliant to see the technique and the use of a FLAT brush to create so much movement in the clouds. What a lovely scape this is. So expansive. I love that you shared another new find in the paper world....something I will need to try down the road. In the meantime, I will continue enjoying your videos and the learning as I slowly foray into the world of watercolor. It's seems like a brilliant medium.

This is just amazing, I had not looked at your cloud videos as I thought I knew how to paint skies, but your use of the .blue bristle brush to smooth out the paint is really clever. It is a technique I have not seen anyone else do, and it makes such a difference to the picture. Thank you.

i live in germany and the leonardo is one of my standard go to watercolor papers, i use it alot, and like it very much, i havent tried the cezanne yet, its not always easy to find leonardo and cezanne here either, hahnenmühle makes on a limited amount of this waercolor paper i think ( or its really popular and sells out fast) i can def recommend it, its nice paper.

Steve I want to thank you for all your wonderful videos, there was one thing you said in one of your videos about you have to paint even if you fail. I was so afraid to fail. Now I have never been trained I have been told I have natural talent so I tend to pick up allot off of videos which you are one I watch. I had an artist tell me paint what you see it has served me well now I add what you said to the list. Thank you Steve!

I'm so glad you did this review! I'm having a very hard time finding Arches or Fabriano 100% cotton paper in my country (many stores have them, but they're not in stock) and Canson Heritage (the only other 100% cotton paper I could find here) is just over the top expensive here (I'm from Romania, in Europe), but a store I usually buy from recently told me they got Hahnemuhle brand 100% cotton paper and I was slightly tempted to buy it, but didn't know what to expect. Now I will actually go buy it, so thank you!

Very clearly explained. Excellent tutorial. I think the end result will depend on the quality of paper, it's absorption and cotton content. We don't get these quality papers here in India, and if we do get, they are exorbitantly priced.

not an expert by any means but have worked w diff papers and getting the feel of some. I don't think I would buy the Hahnemühle, paper again unless I become really good.lol. I left masking fluid on it for awhile and it tore the paper when I tried to take it off. This didn't happen with ARCHES or other quality paper but I guess this is getting used to what it does.... complicated at times.

There’s a great fine mister bottle designed in Holland called Flairosol on Amazon, like 14-16 bucks, it works well. In a paper block, you don’t have to worry about colors bleeding through diffusion at the edges to the next page?

Steve, Just used the Cezanne 140lb Hahnemuhle for a cloudscape. It was awlful. The buckling was unreal and water seeped under the thread and glue on the sides and lifted the paper in spots off the block. If you compare the way an Arches block is put together and this block you can immediately see disadvantages to Hahnemule construction. Very disconcerting after paying almost $30 for same. I will have to stretch this paper before using unless I do something with less water. Definitely will get Leonardo 300 lb.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому +1

Buckling is a fact of life with 140 lb. I'm afraid. Brand doesn't matter. I love Arches and not saying Hahnemühle is equal but I've had more Arches sheets pull away from the block than I can count. I happens and its not uncommon. Just depends on how wet it gets.

Thank you for this. I am mostly in Europe and it isn't always easy to get art stores here to tell you what the exact differences are between the many Hahnemühle papers. (Some of the differences are easy to read and figure out, but sometimes you can be tricked by thinking "acid free" might be a cotton paper - which it often is not.) This clarified a lot - and I love your sky painting.

Just getting into landscapes/skyscapes now. This is great as well as your video study on skies. I have picked up a lot. Do you plan on doing any studies on water? I am attempting a scape of an island in a still lake with nice reflections. My water is a bit blah after wet on wet wash. Love to see how you "build" water.

Excellent demo....especially love how you explain the anatomy of a cloud. Thanks! FYI, third link for Hahnemule paper is a 'no show'.

that little watercolor postcard metal box could be repurposed into a portable palette by spray painting appliance epoxy on the inside?
