5:17 - I don't know why it decided to name this location in Polish but this monument is called "The Juche Tower" and was built to be representative of the ideological style of Marxist-Leninism instilled into North Korea and her people by Kim Il Sung back in the 50's. There are books written on it by the Kim Jong Il himself if you were at all curious into learning more, albeit I don't know why you'd want to. But the term "Juche" is very popular amongst North Korean culture as it's also used in things like their calendar system (Which operates mostly the same as the Gregorian calendar system to the best of my knowledge but year zero is just when Kim Il Sung was supposedly born atop Mount Paektu, a spiritual place for all Koreans, but North Koreans specifically even though half of it belongs to China nowadays and Kim Il Sung was actually born outside of Pyongyang.) Alright, now roll in all your "HOLY INDOCTRINATION, BATMAN" jokes now Edit: Also in terms of whether or not North Koreans defect through Russia, some do, but only a small few. The DPRK/RF border has a lot of densely packed guards or the crossing is just really dangerous due to harsh weather. The closest major city to North Korea on the DPRK/RF border would be Vladivostok and my guesses are that Putin, (someone who, as with Xi Jinping, unfortunately thinks deporting North Koreans back to North Korea is a good idea,) is smart enough to realize that most North Korean's will probably try to move there first in their Russo-defection scheme. So he probably has plans in place to be ready for that. Additionally, the border with China being a LOT larger (almost exactly 80 times larger), North Korea can't keep the DPRK/PRC border as heavily secured. There will be spots that aren't guarded as heavily, or at all. Which means under cover of night, slipping across becomes pretty easy especially since it isn't a literal minefield like the DPRK/RK border. Add to the fact that the Chinese cities right by the DPRK/PRC border are all densely populated. So it's a bit easier for a North Korean person to blend in with a large crowd, where as in Russia you'll need to traverse lots of really small towns and not look out of place if you didn't go to Vladivostok, which we've already established may not be a good idea. Also there's just generally a lot more knowledge of humanitarian groups helping defectors escape through China rather than through Russia too. Add to the fact that going through China, you've not gotta traverse the entirety of Siberia, what is essentially five million square miles of just forest with the occasional city occupied with less people than Chinese cities, and also people that a North Korean wouldn't blend in with all that well in most cases. Because let's not forget, Russia is predominantly white, and North Korea isn't. *_In short, it's just more dangerous since the border is more heavily guarded, the escape is more easily hindered by harsh weather, it's a much longer trip where you have less ways to blend in meaning it's easier to be caught, and 99 out of 100 times you'd need to make your grand escape alone and without help, unlike in China where there are groups of people to help you. This isn't to say that people don't still try to escape through Russia, it's just MUCH less common._*
Actually Sambucha both in China and Russia the law is to deport them back to North Korea but if they get through China and into either Mongolia or Thailand as the law in Mongolia and Thailand is to deport them back to *South Korea* you just have to give yourself up to the Mongolian or Thai police
7:20 no If you go to Russia you would have to reach Vladivostok ( for a UNHCR consulate i think ) but getting there without being catched by the police is impossible. Putin does everything to catch them
Why? Why are other countries so hell bent on getting citizens back to NK? I'm assuming it's just to make sure they keep their relationship with NK as peaceful as they can possibly be.
I just thought about how nice forests and stuff would be in North Korea, judging by some of the photos and the fact that barely anyone is allowed to go there, it would be pretty untouched.
7:58 This is likely Kaesong, the reason being is that during the Korean War, the US air Forced dropped a shit ton of bombs all over Korean territory north of the 38th Parallel (initial border), since Kaesong was south of this line, it was spared the bombing, preserving the Korean architecture it had, while in other sites everything had to be rebuilt
