- (17 May 1994) American teenager Stephen Freehill, facing charges over the same
series of incidents that caused American Michael Fay to be caned,
will not get the same punishment, a Singapore court decided on
Tuesday (17/5). Freehill, 17, was instead fined Singapore $800
($516) after the prosecution withdrew charges of vandalism, which
requires mandatory caning.

Tiger Claw I think if we had caning in America crime would be cut at least in half. Have a caning compound in every large city with an adjacent recovery hospital. No prison sentence unless the individual is on death row, over 50, or has health problems that could kill them if caned. Keep the person in confinement until their court hearing for more severe crimes. After the judge has sentenced them to caning whatever the offenses, take them to the torture chamber, cane them, and keep them in the hospital just long enough to recover. Caning strokes should be no less than 3 and no more than 10. Would save a LOT of money!

EVERYONE must obey the local law when one is in another nation, NO ONE ABOVE the law. The verdict should be the same 12 wips after the potus wrote letter to Singapore. It could be reduced to 4 only if the mother want to take the other 8. Just because you are an american doesn't make you above the law when crime is not paid, or else the judicial branch will be useless.

I don't agree with the cane law. The cane law along with execution should be banned. It is extremely inhumane. I also read an interview with Michael Fay in which he said that they brutally tortured him and the other boys to a point were it was extremely inhumane. They hit him, made them bleed, stripped them, showered them in cold water and put them in a cold shivering room, as well as not letting them sleep the entire night. I also find it extremely unfair that he didn't just get caned but also jailed because of just vandalising. They should've made him pay for the property he damaged, thats it. His punishment should have been 1 night in jail AT MOST, nothing more.
FPSReactions What you need to know is that caning is a scare tactic for everyone. What good would one night in jail do to him? Singapore is known for being a clean and extremely safe country. Vandalism here is treated the same way as rape. If the law is just like what you said, one night in jail, what good would it do the to the vandal? In fact, more people would start vandalising. What's more than one mere night in jail? You could go in and come out the next day, and then go vandalising again.

Otto Warmbier was tortured in prison by N Korean officers for stealing a small flag out of a hotel. he was returned here unconscious, and died a week later. Michael Fay was caned in Singapore for spray painting cars. Lesson: when you go to visit a foreign country, you are in THEIR country, not your own. Obey their laws, respect their customs or suffer the consequences.
In most cases that makes sense, and it usually is the case but not always, that sometimes certain laws are open to abuse and people are wrongly judged.

Women do get caned but in domestic and under Sharia as well as a separate legal system, either way it should all be banned outright but there are also teaching staff in schools that have been working to bring the cane back for girls.

I understand that Randy Fay Chan did of cancer in 1998. Michael Fay has matured and gone on to earn a degree, and work at a casino. At least he straightened out.

All that fuss! Back in the days when I was in High School, we were regularly caned - not four, but six cuts.
