My husband and I played a game: "What song best represents you to me?" For him, I chose "The Music That Makes Me Dance," and this version appeared here a week to the day after he died. I'm heartbroken that I can't recall his song for me, but, I have this - and the nearly 40 years we were together, together since the night we met. Thank you, Gustavo, and THANK YOU, Barbra.
You are lucky to have had such a special man. I know he was because this is such a special song. Treasure the memory of your 40 years. And, so what if you can't remember his song for you? Maybe one morning you'll wake up, and it will suddenly come to you! Or maybe it won't. What's important is the love and the 40 years- many of us don't get that. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
That’s a beautiful story and I am deeply sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing. My husband and I have been together for 42 years and I understand. ❤
Are we smarter when young or just have a lot less to lose? Probably the latter. The best advice is just to travel light and hop over all the fences we want!
This was always my favorite song from the Broadway cast recording of Funny Girl. But WOW! Did she ever take the song and shake it up, making it better! This really makes you wonder what treasures are buried in her Music Vault of her recordings over the decades, things that for one reason or another were never released (at least so far).
This is such a fascination! I saw her on this tour at the Hollywood Bowl & remember that two toned gown vividly. Interesting how the younger Streisand approached these types of songs more bombastically than in the later years. She sounded determined to blow your mind ( which of course she most assuredly did). In time, and I guess as a result of her overwhelming success, she let some of this "listen to me I'm great" quality go. And rightfully so because she doesn't need to shout out she's great since this is quite obvious even when she's doing her nails.
The arrangers fit her performance style as well in the early years. The theatrical interpretations are what made the legend. Over by “simply streisand”. Same thing happened with Midler. Barry and bill Hennessy created a superstar out of a mediocre talent. She became everything she mocked as the divine miss m.
@@mzmiller52 Really???!! Barbra is everything but a mediocre talent, in fact she becomed a living leyend because of her GIANT ENORMUOS GREAT HUGE TALENT!!! And to prove it she she is the only one in the entire planet to have number ones for sixty years in a row, that makes your comment such a mediocre one, YOU CAN LIKE HER OR DISLIKE HER BUT NEVER DENIE IT!!!🤗🤗🤗
Eloquently put, my thoughts in your words. I adore her,I prefer her earlier work. The person who commented obviously didn't understand what you were saying.
This is 1 of my all time favorites from the Broadway Soundtrack...I have been awed by Her Voice....and the material she bathes me in....can't wait for her new Album...Release me 2.....ot really never got better for me ...to listen to Barbra...yes Hers is the music that made my soul Dance...
Although nobody's perfect. This first lady of song is the closest to perfection I know. No doubt "the voice of the XX century" and continues in the XXI century as well.
Thank you so much Gustavo ! You made a fantastic job to show us these extremely rare performance. .Despite the poor sound quality, you can hear very clearly that this performance is excellent. Barba's intensity and the way she holds a note endlessly is breathtaking.
Hey everybody. It appears most of us are hugeeee fans of Barbra. We really need to petition her to release more concert footage of this time period. I know she has to have it in her vault. Knowing the perfectionist she is she might think some of it is subpar but I know we all wanna see it.
Joshua, surprised by your reply. I usually get my head handed to me for pointing out truth. Btw, same thing happened to the divine miss m. Bette Midler is schlock. Miss m was genius.
As always, thank you!! It's wonderful to finally hear her sing that middle section I've heard talked about. (The 'fiddle and oboe' part...and she just slays it. I wish she had recorded a version of this arrangement...or if she did, I wish they had released it!)
This is fantastic! What a find! I saw her as a teenager in Atlanta (she was magnificent) on this tour, but she didn't perform the song there. Thank you, Gustavo!
My chosen role model since 63. I was 10. That was the same year I sat in the second row to see My Fair Lady on Broadway... America was expressing itself in such beautiful ways then . Our spirits were all aglow with our visions of beauty growing.. During that stunning photography of Barbra in Music That Makes Me Dance, her voice was really set free. Then, by my turning 13 she set the standard for every expression I heard, That was when her voice really began to blossom in such detail to match the call upon her innate ability to transmit the feeling and human meaning of a songwriter's beautiful work..
Gee, I've never heard this before - with the added verses. You always surprise me with what you have. I think I have all the rare stuff and you come up with this gem.
Wow! What a great way to wake up to a rare recording of Barbra singing! Thank you so much💋😍💋. I've only been able to read about this fabled concert until now. And now I can hear it. I even enjoyed that background hammering. Lol.
“in advance”, “for s glance”, “dance” IS THE WORK OFVTHE LYRICIST BOB MERRILL. All Streisand is doing-and it’s a big “is”-is singing and interpreting the lyrics.
I have the poster hanging in my apartment...I saw her here in Chicago the same year. Chicago was the last stop on her tour which she ended when she learned when was pregnant with Jason.(he was tagged the Million Dollar Baby by the press because supposedly that's what she lost by canceling) I didn't see her live again till Vegas 1970. Barbra forever
as i understand, this number was conceived as a substitute for "my man," one of fanny brice's most iconic songs, when the copyright holders wouldn't permit its use in the original broadway production. in any case, it's a great torch-tinged ballad in its own right.
That’s one of the best songs from the stage of Funny Girl, so good is it that years later her understudy Lannie Kazan recorded it along with host of other artists!
“Hello gorgeous”! When I moved into my apartment a friend gave me this poster which you showed at the start here, which is now framed on my wall, and thanks to you I can “be” there back in 66! Thank you! Fantastic!
That early voice is just amazing. What happened? I think the obc version is still the best, but it’s wonderful to hear what was left out on the obc. Peter matz sure knew how to show off that voice.
I always felt the red and black dress should have been used for this song on broadway. She creates great images with her handling of this gown. Should also have been the theater poster for funny girl.
❤️ @ 5:37 she is in sync with the song. Absolutely amazing photos and footage. Where was this unarchived? A heart breaking song, and as for me...I do need more him!
Great arrangement. Barbra was in fabulous voice that evening. What would I give for an official release, Newport 1966! Didnt she also sing Les feuilles mortes that night?
No and I mean NO ONE could match or even come close to Ms Streisand in her prime. God given and perfect. This is the only version of this mediocre song I have ever enjoyed.
As long as you are giving credit to the photographer, you might as well (as a courtesy) give credit to my parents who shot the Super 8 film and my company, which digitized the film you downloaded from the Internet and integrated into the video. Barbra's people forgot to bring their film equipment and asked my dad (the festival's lawyer, briefly seen in the sunglasses) to film what he could - even if it had to be silent.
Of course I will! Please let me know the name of your parents, and please do tell a bit more about the story. Recently I've watched a Bob Dylan documentary. His appearances at Newport were filmed, even when he was not yet a big star. And Barbra? No one cared for professional filming of her concerts? Thank God for your parents and their camera. :)

Thank Jules styne and bob merrill. Thank God Jules styne went downtown to see and hear streisand when she was phenomenal.
I was there. Thanks for the great memories. I watched her rehearse. I climbed over the fence. She saw me. Didn't care. I was 16.
