  • SPECIAL THANKS TO THE NEAL PETERS COLLECTION for his outstanding photos of this concert. Without his contribution we wouldn't have pictorial documentation from that unforgettable night.
    Barbra started a twenty-city tour in July 1966 after returning from the London run of "Funny Girl". Because of her pregnancy she was forced to cut the tour to four cities (Newport, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Chicago). She performed this version of "The Music That Makes Me Dance" at her first stop of the "An Evening with Barbra Streisand" tour, Newport, Rhode Island, July 30, 1966. As she explains in the introductory speech, this arrangement was used during the "Funny Girl" run in London. It was never released and it's very rare. The quality of the audience recording is poor, even though I tried my best to improve it.
    I used mostly photographs and rare 8mm home films from that night. However, some photographs of Barbra using the black dress in the second act are from Philadelphia (she used the same wardrobe the second date).

    My husband and I played a game: "What song best represents you to me?" For him, I chose "The Music That Makes Me Dance," and this version appeared here a week to the day after he died. I'm heartbroken that I can't recall his song for me, but, I have this - and the nearly 40 years we were together, together since the night we met. Thank you, Gustavo, and THANK YOU, Barbra.

      You are lucky to have had such a special man. I know he was because this is such a special song. Treasure the memory of your 40 years. And, so what if you can't remember his song for you? Maybe one morning you'll wake up, and it will suddenly come to you! Or maybe it won't. What's important is the love and the 40 years- many of us don't get that. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

    Hey everybody. It appears most of us are hugeeee fans of Barbra. We really need to petition her to release more concert footage of this time period. I know she has to have it in her vault. Knowing the perfectionist she is she might think some of it is subpar but I know we all wanna see it.

    This is such a fascination! I saw her on this tour at the Hollywood Bowl & remember that two toned gown vividly. Interesting how the younger Streisand approached these types of songs more bombastically than in the later years. She sounded determined to blow your mind ( which of course she most assuredly did). In time, and I guess as a result of her overwhelming success, she let some of this "listen to me I'm great" quality go. And rightfully so because she doesn't need to shout out she's great since this is quite obvious even when she's doing her nails.

    • @mzmiller52
      @mzmiller52 2 роки тому

      The arrangers fit her performance style as well in the early years. The theatrical interpretations are what made the legend. Over by “simply streisand”. Same thing happened with Midler. Barry and bill Hennessy created a superstar out of a mediocre talent. She became everything she mocked as the divine miss m.

    My chosen role model since 63. I was 10. That was the same year I sat in the second row to see My Fair Lady on Broadway...
    America was expressing itself in such beautiful ways then . Our spirits were all aglow with our visions of beauty growing..
    During that stunning photography of
    Barbra in Music That Makes Me Dance,
    her voice was really set free.
    Then, by my turning 13 she set the standard for every expression I heard, That was when her voice really began to blossom in such detail to match the call upon her innate ability to transmit the feeling and human meaning of a songwriter's beautiful work..

    As long as you are giving credit to the photographer, you might as well (as a courtesy) give credit to my parents who shot the Super 8 film and my company, which digitized the film you downloaded from the Internet and integrated into the video. Barbra's people forgot to bring their film equipment and asked my dad (the festival's lawyer, briefly seen in the sunglasses) to film what he could - even if it had to be silent.
