I was fortunate to see Lainie in FUNNY GIRL, one afternoon. They announced that Barbra would not be appearing, and three quarters of the theatre emptied out. I had already seen Barbra in the show three times, so I decided to see Lainie. And boy what a treat it was. Her performance was difference from Barbra's but absolutely wonderful & exciting. I've loved her ever since.
Ron Laurence Gross wonderful memories! I’ve been disappointed with the Mimi Hines clips of “Funny Girl” did u see Ms. Hines in person? So nice to finally hear Ms. Kazan singsing this song.
At 61 and a Dean Martin fan, I came across a duet between them on YT a few weeks ago I had never seen nor heard of her before but boy, did I fall in love.....
The music that makes me dance- such an awesome song it’s a shame most of the listening public is unaware of this song’s origin, such a beautiful and heart felt song, although it has been recorded by quite a few artists it remains one gem that gets over looked
Streisand was about the same age as Lainie is here when she recorded her last album to date, Walls. She still sounded sensational. Her voice has hardly diminished with age at all. Lainie has not been so lucky.
Lainie had a marvelous career and she was in many films.... BEACHES was one. Her voice is clearly gone and she struggled with this song, but I give her credit. She did it and did her best. I love her.... Was she "prettier" than Barbra? Who cares. Barbra is now 80. Her voice is not the same either. Time passes. That is most sad to me.
Until tonight I didn't know the name Lanie Kazan but came across her on a performance from an Ed Sullivan show, which in turn lead me here. Now I'm totally in love.
Lainie has a beautiful voice, but sadly enough she was struggling with this song ... ❤ her character Marquerita Ventura who sings "South Of My Border" in "Lust in the dust" (1986) 🙂🥰🙏
Funny how Lainie hints at how tough Barbra was while Lainie comes across as a much tougher lady. Barbra seems tough but there is a sweetness about her, a vulnerability that is so real that a lesser performer like Lainie doesn't have. It's not to put down Lainie, almost every performer is a lesser performer than Barbra. Also, Barbra's singing is the best, natural, not affected, timeless, beautiful tone, impecable phrasing, always perfect, control and dynamics and power and it seems so easy, effortless. Those qualities can't be taught or learned. And that is why Barbra is the greatest star of them all.
Lainie Kazan had one career misfortune after another sadly and apparently made one bad decision after another. Streisand rarely missed performances in Funny Girl because she believed that after the show was a smash, and she became a star, audiences deserved to see her. Fair enough. Lainie was once a pretty good singer. Not great, but good. This is painful to listen to and sad to watch. If she's new to you and want to hear her at her best, she made many albums so try to find them.
Admirable effort! I think it’s great she’s trying, but as an accompanist I’m confused why they didn’t try a more comfortable key for her, even if it had to be in the lady bass key. Unfortunately our voices age and become more harsh. You can hear moments of her former tone quality in the lower parts. She’s a great story teller! Get you a pianist that knows what they are doing girl and you’ll be golden. She looks great!
The problem is a song like this has a big range which makes going lower more difficult. The original range is from G#3 to E5. She's doing this in Ab (at age 76) which is a minor third down from the original B so her lowest note is here F3 - she'd have to go below that. (When she recorded it in 1998 at age 58, it was in Bb.) It's said that Jule Styne wanted Streisand so that he wrote the song so that only she could sing it. P.S. I'm singing this in my Adult Ed Musical Theatre class - turning 68 next month and I transposed it to Ab too!
@@xhaxha1028 It sounds like more than an aging voice to me. She seems to be having some temporary vocal issues (from a cold, or strain, or nerves, etc.) that got worse through the song, and was just trying to power through. I seriously doubt she would have attempted this song (regardless of key) if that was her usual voice at this stage of her game. This was pretty painful, but I suspect she's still capable of delivering a much better version.
Agreed. Also, if you watch some of Kazan's performances from decades past, you can see there was some questionable technique even in her much younger years. Had that had been a bit more solid, it might have helped her navigate these later years better. But hey, at least she's a good storyteller...
She was wonderful and her story telling is interesting...however her actual voice is gone and I don't mean that unkindly but she's not making any of the notes here...and after all it's a demanding tune, I'm sure she did it quite well when she occasionally had the chance to go on In Funny Girl -
.... everyone has their insecurities y'know .... and if you'll listen carefully... they're always telling you in one way or another... It's a very human thing.. 😉 ... i
Oh wow, she really was prettier than Barbra and I can see why they said she was too attractive to play Fanny Brice. I also kind of understand the frustration an understudy would have if they had been excited to go on with friends and family in the audience, then the star changed their minds and performed. Actors have ambitions and dream of being in a spotlight just for a moment or two. To be ready to go for the star takes a lot of preparation and rehearsals, and I am sure some of them want to share their craft with the world in a leading role that would showcase their talent. They all know better than anyone that they're not the "singular sensation", but it's great for them to go on once in a while.
Unlike Barbra, It seems Lainie didn't learn the art of transposing the key to fit an aging voice. It's too bad really, a different arrangement and key, this could have been beautiful.
Flaws and all, Lainie is the ONLY one (besides Barbra of course) who has the right to sing a FG song ... and before anyone starts beating her up, she is pushing 80 yrs. old here.
Agreed. While not as successful as Barbra, Lanie has had a very fruitful career, full of memorable stage, film, and TV performances. It's beyond me why she feels it necessary to re-litigate some "almost role" from 60 years ago. She so has much to be grateful for.
@@lbputzer Lainie's been trading on that her whole career since . And if she was told she was too attractive to play Fanny Brice then she must not have been a good actress who could pull it off.
@@ilovebarbra2 Unfortunately she had a weight problem, way way back. She was fired from 'Seesaw' because of just that. She wasn't too attractive to play Fanny Brice, she just wasn't right to play her or she would have done the touring production. She toured in concerts and I saw her in Sydney and she was underwhelming to put it mildly.

sadly she didn't keep her voice up probably because later years were acting gigs, she was phenomenal in the 60's-70's as a powerful singer
Did I misunderstand or did she call Barbra ugly? That whole bit about “I didn’t look like Barbra - I was too beautiful to be Fanny”.

She looks like Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. They could be sisters.
Funny, she played Bette midler's mother in ' beaches'
Great story. But that ending -- not funny, girl.
What happened to her voice???
Id like to see her come out to Phoenix Arizona and play at the MIM theater!!!
Musical Instruments Museum
her voice is gone.sad
This is rough listening
I read she "dances" on her way out of the supermarket without paying.
