For those nerds curious: "occlusion culling" is when the engine hides 3D geometry that is out of sight. This is important for optimization because without occlusion culling, map geometry and objects that the camera can't see are still processed by the renderer, taking up GPU cycles. Back in the days when I played Custom Edition and my PC was a potato, it drove me nuts when map makers wouldn't bother to learn how to place portals effectively because a custom map that was no more detailed than something that shipped with the game would run like garbage.
I have some mapping experience for Jedi Academy on the old idTech 3 engine. I think the very same concept applies there as well, except it's called visibility (vis). While the level editor was capable of making visibility portals automatically, a map may still need some manual portal-hint placements to keep the FPS high and prevent or minimize FPS drops. It's an effort most players will never know about if the mapper does a good job.
Occlusion culling is when the game engine doesn't _render_ objects that aren't visible to the camera because they are obscured by other objects or geometry. This is not to be confused with SSAO or Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, which has nothing to do with not rendering objects and is in fact about approximating ambient light occlusion.

14:50 For anyone wondering, “Occlusion culling” is a thing in 3D graphics that hides stuff you shouldn’t be able to see because something else is in the way. (I.e. if there are two parallel walls on a flat plane and you stand at such an angle that you would only see one in real life, occlusion culling prevents you from seeing both at once).
@@RazzBeri1 I know this was a long time ago, but in case anyone stumbles across it somehow... The type of culling mentioned above is built into GPUs by default, and is required for things to appear correctly. If objects are rendered in the wrong order, they might all still need to be drawn which is really inefficient. The only reason to discuss occlusion culling is for efficiency, the programmer ordering things correctly or deciding something is too small on screen to bother drawing or out of the line of sight.

Reach was great tho...
@@SlavaThereshin Reach was good, but I'll ignore it for the sake of the dunking on 343i's games.
I searched for "Where does InfernoPlus live?"
If I made a game and HAD to put a micro transaction in my game, it would be a button that’s says “donate” instead of “100$ for 30 gems” or “5$ for a loot box”.
It would just be a thing if people liked my game and wanted to donate. Similar to Patreon

I'm currently using Halo Reach: Evolved as a vehicle to convince 343 to release proper mod tools for MCC.
Love your content, keep it up!
Very hopeful for an Advanced Revamp of the original mod tools for a more quality and streamlined experience.

Now that is an ANTIQUE reference, right there. 10/10

Is that the original Warthog theme? I’ve only heard the YT/Netflix version.

Halo is a trilogy. Agreed. Though it has a prequel and a side story worthy of the Halo name too
I consider ODST to be just a part of Halo 3 like a DLC
Spartan Ninja Or expansion, like in the old times.

I hope alex does well in your kitchen as he randomly states "shuffling songs by Breaking Benjamin" ;)
21:27 if you showed this image to someone who'd never played halo 2 before and told them one of these is fanmade i can guarantee they wouldn't pick yours. Good job very well made.
I have a feeling that if a group of people who never played halo 2 had to choose a map made by a fan it would be the top left one the majority of the time
Killer video, dude. Halo CE and Halo 2 Vista had such great map making tools. I wish more recent AAA games had mod support. It's unfortunate that Epic stopped UT4 development because of Fortnite.
Holy shit, I have massive respect for this guy. I'd love to play on that map
Kenshi is a great example of a recent game w/ great modding tools

Kenshi isn't a recent game though?
@@Tiel424 Kenshi was fully released in december of 2018 which means it is most likely in its most stable and mod-ready state
@@permanentlydreaming right...but it, and all the modding tools, were first released 6 years ago and updated since then. I wouldn't call that a new game anymore than I would have Minecraft back in 2011.
I think he has the right of it - new games don't typically ship with modding tools. Especially not AAA games like Halo was back in the day.

People were already modding demo builds of Halo Reach on PC, so its a safe bet that even if there isnt OFFICIAL mod support in MCC when it comes out, modding will still be doable.
It`s so nice to find a video game youtuber who actually creates something and doesn't just create "review" videos
