Concrete Bench w/ MELTED CRAYON inlay covered in Epoxy || how to make
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- This episode shows how to make a bench or table from white concrete, melted crayons, epoxy resin, and plywood. Building this epoxy crayon concrete bench was a crazy project, but a ton of fun. We used all kinds of techniques - woodworking, concrete, CNC digital fabrication, pouring epoxy resin, and more, so grab some popcorn…this one was fun! Hopefully it inspires some of you to get out there and use crayons and concrete to make a bench, table, or even something else!
For the concrete mix, I used glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) mix so the bench could be poured thin. We made a drip-shaped foam knockout for the concrete form using the X-Carve. This left the drip shape in the concrete. We could then pour a 2:1 epoxy resin layer in the drip inlay, before melting crayons on top of the epoxy. For the last step, we poured another layer of thick set epoxy resin (a deep pour epoxy) on top of the melted crayons. Lastly, we used the Shaper Origin handheld CNC to cut the legs out of plywood.

MUY buena calidad, el texto imagenes. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO Un manuel muy completo y trabajado. Resulta muy práctico. Para principiantes y profesionales. Lo recomiendo
That would make a really cool piano chair. Cool stuff.
Thanks much! that would really be cool to see someone rocking out on the piano while sitting on this 😎😀
Shaun Boyd's work is amazing - Subscribed!
Another fun build! Glad we could mix our skills and make something cool!
So much fun! We got to find a way to collaborate more often 👍👍
Dexterfying. Sarcastic humour. Smiling
😁😁😎
@@modustrial I am now stealing that quote... Wicked laughing smile
Wow! I love the idea of using the insulation foam as a form for this! Nice and easy to machine a custom design, plus it's a breeze to remove. Awesome idea!
Thanks Stephen!
the industry has been using foam for I don't know how long lol
That turned out great. Would be nice in a larger scale as a childs desk or art table.
1st off- CHICAGO, baby...yeah! 2nd---NIIIIIICE music guys
Thanks! Chi-city represent! 😎
I have the festool track saw and “system”... after seeing this Kreg system I can tell you first hand Kreg thought through all the issues festool refuses to update and charges and arm and a leg for. Thanks for the demo.
I’m going to go sell my festool now!
No problem Greyson! Glad I could help 😀
This design would make for a great art piece to hang on the wall...The drips would look like they were running down the wall...Loved the bench and the collaboration. It's always a joy to be introduced to other makers whose videos I can binge watch 😂
Thanks Marissa! I totally agree about the wall art... As soon as I saw the crayons melted into inlay I thought wow this would have been awesome if we could have done the crayons in a vertical. Wall art or a waterfall edge to a table would be really cool like this 😀
Very cool videos. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend keep making. Love watching ur house and shop build.
Your videos keep getting better.
Thanks Rob!
It's just pure joy to see it. Just georgeous. Thank you for sharing. I'm learning a lot from you.
This showed up in recommended (probably because I am subbed to EvanAndKatelyn) Subbed you and Shaun.
I guess that maybe why its in my recommend aswell small world haha definitely a good recommendation
@Justin Updyke Glad you found me - welcome to the community! :)
Exactly how i found this channel!
What a cool design!!! The combination of the collors and the white concrete is just awsome. You are a very creative man!
Thanks for the kind words brother!
The legs look like storm trooper eyes. Love it❤
Thanks Tiffany! They kinda do now that you mention it!
Craycre!!!!!! Are you kidding me!!!!that is flipping smart!!!
Thanks brother! Figured people would get a kick out of cray-cray Crete 😆🤣
Really cool design! And I like how you used so many tools in coordination together like an orchestra.
Thanks Bruce! As I often hear, must be nice with all those tools 🤣🤣
Modustrial Maker Ha! Didn’t mean that at all! I was just saying you did a good job using what you had. I’ve been using Affinity Designer for designing svgs for my Glowforge and I like it.
Beautiful work
Loved everything! Cool to see you guys collaborate.
Thanks Grayson! I wish Shaun and I lived closer and could work together more, it was a ton of fun
Color theory. Find a color wheel online, if you mix opposite colors together you end up with muddy colors
I'll check it out. Thanks!
Eso blanco que será disculpe mi ignorancia.
💖💖💖💖💖 It's A Piece of ART ! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
"Out there"....
This was F#@
Thanks Jennifer! 😁
Wow. Simply amazing.
Thanks Ben!
The crayon blend reminds me of the thermal pools in Yellowstone NP. Super rad
Old faithful for the win! ⛲⛲
I love when You and Sawn work together. You are both Amazing 😉
Thanks! Wish he lived closer so we could work together more often!
This was good dude! I've seen soooooo many other videos with people trying to mix crayon in furniture, some with epoxy or wood but they never cover the top so.... it's still a crayon top that marks anything you place on it lol - nailed it.
Thanks brother!!
Love the 'Caulk Talk' . Cheers.
Thanks! It's a concrete tradition 😜
Awesome! I want a boardroom table like that! You rock!
Thanks Paul! Huge conference table like this would really be cool
Love these epoxy builds!
Thanks Laurel!
Epoxy and crayons = heaven
Thanks! 😇😇
This is the most amazing thing I've seen in a while on youtube. The mix of techniques is juste pure perfection. Thanks
Thanks Ruben!
I love the crayon tables for kids room type of stuff. I may not like this a ton, but very cool process. Shaun is definitely getting around.
Thanks Rowland! This was a bit of departure for me too, but a fun project none-the-less :)
So much great info in this one!! Thank you so much Mike!
Thanks Nick!
Looks good, guys! Can’t wait to see the matching dining table
Thanks Kris! A crayon dining table huh? 😆😎
Your creativity never ceases to amaze me! Awesome job as usual Mike
Thank you Seth!
Super sick design! You and your friend got a sub
.........This is the best build by far.......all the time well worth it. (You could easily get a nice price from a dealer that love this type of art deco....)
Thanks Brian! Very kind words!
Respect the drip Karen
this is art.
Thanks Derek!
Excellent. Very whimsical. Extremely informative video.
Thank you! 😀
Great job! Thank for video!
Thanks Evan! Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Pure art
Thanks!
So great well done guys
Thanks Jesse! 😀
Oh man that crayon melting was so satisfying!
#Oddlysatisfying 😁
I literally held my breath as you jumped up and down on that beautiful piece! also I'm curious as to how you finished the edge of the table where the crayon layer peaked trough the epoxy?
Thanks! GFRC is some strong stuff, so it wasn't as risk as it looked :) The epoxy actually softened the crayon up a bit and managed to seep around it, so there was a thin layer of epoxy on the side of the crayons too, which made it easy to finish.
Been subbed to Shaun for a couple years and that brought me here. Concrete really isn't my bag but the bench looks cool.
Awesome, I've been subbed to Shaun for a couple years too... Sounds like we have similar taste, so maybe I can make you a concrete convert ;)
@@modustrial I don't really have room in my wood shop to mess with concrete. I'm old and arthritis in my back and knees prevents me from picking up heavy stuff anymore. I'll watch a couple more vids though for ya. Take care.
Super cool!
Thank you!
Very cool rpject! I thought that it was just different colored resins, until i watched the video!
Thanks much!
Looks great man! I have no idea if this will work but have you tried pre melting the crayons in a saucepan and pouring the colors in one by one for a more controlled design?
Thanks! I have not tried that but I definitely think it could work.
Pro tip- Freeze your crayons for a few hours. makes them super easy to remove the paper.
Awesome work...
Thanks Toshiakum!
Suppppperb... Awesome....👌👌👌
Very cool! I'll take 2! Just drop ' em off when you're ready 😂😂😂 ! This was really a fun video! Thanks again, Pam
😀😀 this one actually found a home at Inventables headquarters here in Chicago
That is very cool! Congrats! Btw love your channel!
Fantastic job, dude! Really beautiful!!! 😃
Thank you! 😀
Awesome build!
Thanks Joachim!
yep, subscribing
Thanks! Glad to have you here!
What do you do with the excess mixed epoxy? Just curious
Whats about the sides where the crayon is on the surface not covered by resin?
Good question. the epoxy actually melted the crayon at the very edges and so it is slightly encapsulated all the way around. However I did some smaller tests where there was a very thin (eg 2-3mm) layer of crayons between two epoxy layers, and surprisingly the overall product was really solid. I put a lot of weight on the test piece and it didn't compress. I wouldn't recommend standing on that combo directly, but very light use application like a tabletop I think it would be fine.
I thought about this. Compression would not be the issue but i see delamination issues ahead
Lindoooo...legend portuguese plase!!! 😍😍😍😍
Amazing!
Thanks much!
Great bench of you two guys! I'm already subscribed to both of you, a long time subscriber!
Thanks Jolien! Always good to see you in the comments :)
What acrylic concrete sealer did you use??
Been watching his videos since about 5k subscribers
Did you do anything for the edges where the crayons were sandwiched? Just wondering if the crayon layer would start to chip out over time if it’s used more than just as a show piece.
Some of the epoxy ended up seeping down the sides and melting the crayons at the edges, so that encapsulated the crayons
SUPERB VIDEO APPRECIATED U R HARD WORK LOVE ❤️U. CLASSY MAN HAVE NO WORDS 😶 ❤️. KEEP GOING 😍
Thank you Rohit! :)
what do you think the thinnest is you could go with GFRC concrete? ive got a cantilevered chair/stool design i was originally planning to make with steel plate but am now wondering if i wanna look into doing it in GFRC for some more flair.
It depends on the size of the unsupported overhang, but with gfrc the rule of thumb is 3/4" - 1"
Modustrial Maker awesome thanks
cool table for a kid's room
Yup, I agree :)
awesome --- be sure to learn about "air crete or aircrete or aerocrete or foam crete" you get the idea --- just in case you haven't already
Thanks! On the list 😉
Again an amazing build ... but why did you somewhat spoil the bottom of the bench by smearing the construction adhesive to the sides without attention to detail?
Thanks! No one will ever see the underside, or even be able to touch it. If you think about it, it's the same process that is used to attach marble, granite, and concrete counters in the kitchens that cost six figures....
@@modustrial Yes that's right but i think you should have spend the 15 minutes needed to make the perfect bench :)
bonus thumbs for ZZ TOP
just for note I don't mind your sponsored content cause you note it at the beginning of the video , so keep doing that when you have sponsored content (that is a neat system especially for those of us in tiny workspaces)
Thanks for understanding! These videos are fun to make, but take a ton of time and effort. The sponsors support the work, and I'll definitely continue to be transparent about it :)
That’s Cray-Cray.
🤪🤪😁
If you ever do a concrete with recessed epoxy/crayon sandwich project again, I suggest you ensure that the epoxy forms a lip at the edge of the piece so none of the crayon is exposed to the air (i.e. it's completely surrounded by epoxy and concrete). That way, if the piece ever gets really hot (Phoenix in mid summer when the A/C fails perhaps), the melting crayon stays where you put it rather than oozing out the side and dripping on the floor or carpet...
Good idea!
The shape of the legs are really interesting
Thanks! Gotta give credit to Shaun for the legs....they were all him.
Really cool Mike! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! 👊
Amazing
Thank you!
I was really impressed with the price of the track saw so far its the most affordable I've seen. What are you're thoughts on it. Have you used some other track saws before
Yes I own a DeWalt as well, and have used the festool. This one holds its own against both of those, but when you combine it with the project table I actually find it is much easier to get perfectly perpendicular 90 degree cuts
I have never thought about using crayons... that idea is actually genius. I´d love to use that on something in the future to test it out. Have you thought about making a second pour of clear epoxy after you took the workpiece out of the form? I don´t know about the hardener you are using but since its self leveling and could be pushed over the edges to cover the sides as well, you could give the entire piece a thin glossy finish that you then can give it a quick grind & polish afterwards to make it look pristine. I can imagine that with the white concrete, it´ll look really awesome (it does anyway :) but maybe this tickles out a bit more even.
Thanks! Just personal preference, but I like the raw stone look of concrete, and wouldn't want to cover it in epoxy. You certainly could do that...just a matter of personal preference 😀
@@modustrial fair enough. in most cases i´d totally agree with the point that you make. i also like the more raw character of the concrete - hmmm i was only thinking about this in this individual case... i suppose that popped into my mind because i got totally hyped by the color to empty space in white ratio^^ "yeahhh more shine!" and so.... realistically id like both versions.
Yup, this isn't a "normal" concrete case, so that is totally reasonable 😀
Very cool design, but what do you do with all of these projects?
This one is actually going to Inventables headquarters here in Chicago. Some are from my home, and others I give to friends or sell at material cost locally
exelente trabajo
Gracias!
That's super awesome Mike and Shaun! What was the rationale for not putting a short stretcher between the aprons?
Thanks Brian! No rationale really, it just seemed strong enough, we were short on time and we like the look of it as it was
Great video my man.
Thanks Arlo!
I love your work ! can't we just use hands to make the face coat ? or spray is really better ?
The Dexter reference was nearly as cool as the table :)
:) Thanks Branden!
Love it, it’s cool 😎
Thanks Tracey!
That table looks awesome! I kinda want to make my own version of it😁
I guess it’s a bench. That explains the size😉
Thanks! It could be either a table or bench, pretty easy to adjust the size to your needs if you make one :)
Super cool build. Those legs are beautiful and the white concrete looks as smooth as Margie's Ice Cream!! Great video!
Thanks Adrian!
What’s the over/under on how many times he talks about being a “maker”. I’m setting the line at 3 1/2.
I think you're setting it too low 😉
You could sell that to an art museum and kids could sit on it
Thank you! That is a huge compliment! 😀
I’m considering doing a similar project using white pigmented concrete. If a slurry is needed to fill imperfections, what’s the best way to go about matching color? Or is it pretty easy to match? Sorry I’ve never worked with this before. Thank you!
White is easy to match...the GFRC mix is naturally pretty white, and when ultra white pigment is used, the eye doesn't really notice variations in white... Colored concrete is much trickier to match, but with white I usually just mix the same gfrc mix as a slurry and eyeball the amount of white pigment
Thank you!
Idk if someone’s said this, but if you freeze the crayons the labels come off a lot easier
Cray-Zee!!! I love this project!
Thanks brother!
What ratio of cfr did you mix into the concrete? Why 400 grit maximum on the concrete? Is the concrete sealer necessary, could you not just use resin?
Above 400 grit and the sealer doesn't bond correctly. You could use resin instead of sealer, but I personally don't like the look of resin over concrete.
did you have to seal the ends where the crayon touched the forms?
Yes, I showed myself removing it but I didn't have footage of adding it... I used paste wax as a release and then silicone caulk on top of that to seal the edges when pouring the epoxy and concrete
Love the Crayon, wonder what it might look like with LEDs in the mix? Great Work as always!!!
Thanks! I'm curious about that as well. I'm not sure how well LEDs would shine through crayons, but there is only one way to find out 😉
@@modustrial What if you melted together some paraffin wax into the separate colors of crayon to make them more transparent?
Nice idea. My eight year old thinks you should have done the splash at the other end with the rest of the color spectrum.
Thanks Wayne! It's great to see your kid taking an interest in design at such a young age :) the reverse would look great too! If he is curious why we did it the way we did, it's because we were mimicking the spectrum of a flame where the blue (the hottest part of the flame) is at the base and the red/orange is at the tips 😀
Awesome video and project!! Liked it a lot! 😀🖍✅👍
Thank you! 😀
In an older video, it started out showing you in front of what looked like your kitchen sink.... Did you make that with the GFRC??? I have never seen anything like it. Do you think it's possible? I would like to something like it.
I didn't make my kitchen sink, but I have made to GFRC sinks for my bathrooms, and gfrc is used in the concrete countertop industry quite often to make integrated sinks. If you are curious and go back to my Instagram feed green late 2017 early 2018 oh, there are some pictures of the GFRC sinks I made.
What did you do on the end where the wax layer is exposed?
The epoxy actually melted a bit at the end so it would up encasing it. If that hadn't happened, I was just going to leave the thin slice of wax exposed.
That looks awesome! I don't know how you don't have a million subscribers......keep up the good work!
Thanks Krista! I hope your I hope you're right 😁
