This just shows how nuts being an Astartes is. You even qualify, you have to be the best of the best. Then, you have to STAY the best of the best through out. And then, as if THAT wasn't enough, you have to be lucky to survive the operation.
Benefits? You are a walking Demigod! Why would anyone do this? Imagine being approached and asked “Hey, how would you like to work directly under Jesus, Son of Nazareth. And I mean you answer DIRECTLY TO HIM.”; do you know how many people would JUMP at that chance?
hey Raven Guard are allowed too. They just have to view them on-screen, secretly, voyeuristically, from orbit, and only allowed to see their families’ worst hardships.
19:33 Well, they do need to sleep, however, they can fight without sleep for almost month. After that, they have to fall asleep, but they need literally 4 hours to fully recharge their body.
SM are pretty rare. In the entire galaxy there is only about 1 million for the entire galaxy. Like navy seal training but where only 1 person passes in a class and all the others died. Also most SM could care less about normal mortal humans except Salamander chapters they will actually sacrifice themselves for mortals. They are also immortal thou most die in battle. Also more than a few chapters did have their gene seed mutate so you have certain chapters have some dramatic physical mutations. Then after all that if they are wounded beyond help they can be put in dreadnoughts which basically is like a ventilator but with cannons so unless dead you are still fighting. Some are even still around 10k years after the Horus heresy.
Thunder Warriors were made literally from whatever the Emperor had on hand, just to bring Тerra into order. They were unstable, and could literally begin to fall apart or go crazy and massacre their own allies. It was a crude, disposable tool assembled from shit and sticks. So when the Emperor captured enough resources to create better warriors, he got rid of them, especially since by the end of the conquests they were literally rotting alive due to the imperfection of their genome. However, the Emperor did not simply dispose of them as trash, in all Imperial archives they are recorded as great heroes who, together with the Emperor, united Terra.
So basically he put them down like dogs because they were going nuts, but didn’t want their legacies slandered. That’s… surprisingly nice, even if the larger part of it was probably sweeping the initial flaws in his creations under the rug.
The reward for becoming an astartes is that you survived becoming an astartes. I don't think that space marines ask you if you want to try out. They just sort of snag you, toss you into their trials, and if you survive... well, there's your reward. Plus you get to say "brother" a lot.
In the night lords trilogy, they return home for a parade. The main character doesn't recognize his mother, and watches as security shots her dead right in front of him for trying to get his attention and disrupting the parade. He doesn't feel remorse and is glad she was gone. This said, the night lords come from one of the more fucked up planets
14:41 i think thats Dante he is old old he is like 10k years old but he is also very powerful :) he is one of few people alive that has actually lived in the time of the emperor.... to put that in perspective imagine if someone today was alive and he has actually seen Jesus with his own eyes Dante is that for warhammer lol
salamander can visit their families, space wolves party hard, blood angels love arts -and blood-, ultramarines probably fill their taxes etc...
Retirement...? Only in death does duty end!
And even then, not entirely

And that is only a warmup on the way to the REAL trials for Grey Knight aspirants.
Relief? Death. Satisfactions? Kill in the name of the Emperor

i love how your taking the time to absorb the information and giving your own thoughts for such a long video.
It depends on the chapter if the space marine can return to his family Salamanders and Ultra marines allow their marines to see their families
