Bricky didn't go that much into Raven Guard lore, so here's some quick points:
    1. Deliverance isn't a planet. It's actually a moon orbiting the planet Kiavahr that was being used as a gulag until Corax led a rebellion and took it over.
    2. The Raven Guard's stealth is fusion of lo-fi and warp shenanigans. They stuff cloth and dirt into their armor joints to quiet the servos and have the ability to just make you forget they're there.
    3. The RG are the smallest legion in number at 5000. They lost 96% of their numbers when they got backstabbed at Isstvan V. Corax is the only reason they made it out.
    4. They are a close second in niceness to the Salamanders. They minimize human casualties and care about normal humans.
    6. They make their own moonshine and have their own unique sign language called Corspeak.
    7. Corax is in the warp on a one-man revenge mission, and turned Lorgar Aurelion's tower into a Freddie Fazbear pop-up. He's now a raven-shaped warp revenge entity. We think. It's possible he may just have a Stand he's projecting into the Warp.

Some clarification on the Blood Angels
The Red Thirst (them wanting to drink blood) affects them all, but for the most part they have this under control, sometimes through questionable means
The Black Rage CAN happen to any of them at any time, but it isn't based off anything like time they've served, it's random. As their current chapter master has been alive for over 1500 years and he hasn't fell to it.
Also when they fall to the Black Rage, they don't see themselves at their Primarch's death....they see themselves as their Primarch
When they fall to the Black Rage they think they are Sanguinius in his final moments fighting against Horus

The reason why he didn't talk about the legions 2 and 11 is because they are considered "purged and forgotten" by the Imperium. In the beginning, GW intentionally didn't not design them, so the W40K players could create their own personal legions 2 and 11, with their own custom background (loyal or traitor). Since so much time has passed, it is now official canon that the information about those legions (and their Primarchs) was wiped out of existence to be never mentioned again. That's why when Bricky gets to those legions, the screen plays white static and he talks about going out and touching grass.

    • @ChaoticTabris

Actually, Rick Priestly said in an interview that he never intended for legions 2 and 11 to be stand-ins for people that want to create their own. The idea of the two lost legions long predates the Horus Heresy being a game. He says he had those to create a mystery and some depth to the lore of the legions. Essentially to keep people asking why they are missing.

It's not even that the Legions can't speak of the 2nd and 11th, no one remembers because Malcador did mind wipes for all the loyalists. During the Heresy Dorn came across stuff for the 2nd and 11th and that's when Malcador showed up to tell him to let it go before revealing that both he and Guilliman asked to have their memories wiped of 2nd and 11th and to allow their legions to be folded into their own. Hence why the Ultramarines were the biggest legion during that time.

To me Warhammer is actually 3 hobbies in one. To some people they love the painting and building of the models. To others they love to play the game and make list to play against other people in tournament settings or at their local FLGS/club. And to others another part of the hobby is the Lore side, where people just read and consume the history of the universe. There is a vast amount of books out there to help fill holes that may pop up IMHO you cant go wrong enjoying either part of the 40k hobby. I myself enjoy all parts of the universe. For me it has become my #1 IP surpassing Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

Oh yeah I totally second this thing about Fulgrim being Griffith because its pretty much stated verbatim in lore that his best friend was Ferrus Mannus and he killed him in order to attain more power. I hate to say it but Ferrus Mannus doesn't have much to him other than looking a lot like guts. Although more adamant iron hands fans might disagree so who knows.

    • @theskullboy8700
      @theskullboy8700 11 місяців тому +11

I wouldn’t completely disagree with that statement on ferrus. To me he is the perfect foil to fulgrim. Where fulgrim was constantly chasing after perfections and letting insecurities rule him, ferrus accepted the fact that there will always be a bigger fish than him. He never had the diplomatic skills like guilliman nor the charisma of Horus or sanguinius but that was okay. They weren’t his strong suit, but he has other strengths that he could work to improve.
I will say though ferrus’ story is really half baked. Which is really unfortunate because he and his legion could be a catalyst for some incredible story telling, and considering how GW worked with the lion’s return. I really hope we can expand on Ferrus’ story.
Thank you for reading my TED talk

Also to clear something just to make sure. Space marine candidates, are typically children between 10-16. The way they are selected and age range depends on the chapter or legion they are being picked by. These are not guardsmen, or something related. Typically selection process involves children from local planet(recruitment world) that have competitions with other children where sometimes its fights to the deaths.(not always). Obviously this is oversimplified, but I'm sure you get it.

On the point of angron not stopping the world eaters from implanting the butchers nails into their brains: the recent angron-the red angel book elaborated on that where it was revealed that he had such a deepseated hatred for his sons and despised them so much that he let them do it despite knowing what it would do to them. Have them suffer as he suffers.
Angron is such a piece of crap in lore, but a tragic one for he was supposed to be one of the most honorable of the primarchs but got messed up by the butchers nails. They drove him mad.

Loved your reaction and thoughts. My personal favorite legion is the Alpha Legion simply because they are both goofy and scary at the same time. The common meme is that the Alpha Legion is secretly still loyal to the emperor and playing the long con against chaos. Dunno how true that is, but in the books there are so many conflicting plot points it helps perpetuate the meme.
One of the most recent and interesting examples of this is when a squad of Alpha Legion marines steal an important imperial artifact. They get caught mid-escape by one of the Emperor's saints, and right before the saint is about to kill them she pauses and gets some kind of telepathic message (presumably from the Emperor) and suddenly lets them go. It will probably never be revealed in canon whether they are still secretly loyal, but all the goofy and creepy shit they get into is why they are my favorite.

iirc, during the Heresy, while Alpharius and Omegon had not picked sides, they were approached by a cabal of xenos psykers, who brought them visions of the two futures they were on the brink of choosing.
In one, Alpharius Omegon stays loyal, and the Emperor would defeat Horus, but be mortally wounded and kept alive for ten thousand years, before Chaos would return and ultimately destroy humanity.
In the other, Alpharius Omegon sides with Horus, and the traitor legions and the Ruinous Powers of chaos would wipe the galaxy clean of human life in a century, in an orgy of violence so unimaginable that it would burn out the powers of Chaos themselves.
The Alpha Legion supposedly took Horus's side. Mankind did not burn out in a depraved Chaos omnicide on a galactic level.

So wrt Space Marine recruitment, it can be quite variable, but the only parts that are pretty universal are:
    1) You take a geneseed (which grow from "progenium glands" inside existing Space Marines, and get harvested either on maturity or when the Marine dies, using a fucking surgical saw on the battlefield) and you use it to grow a new set of Marine bio-implants (20 completely new organs).
    2) You take a suitable candidate - ideally a very healthy, strong male in or close to adolescence, since the new organs hijack the biological transformation that young men go through.
    3) You implant the organs in the candidate (the sequence and method varies massively - the Blood Angels, for example, perform a complete blood replacement in the process and put the neophytes in crystal caskets to complete the process).
    4) The partially-transformed neophyte is put through psycho-conditioning and extensive, relentless training until the Chapter's methods and beliefs are totally imprinted in their minds.
    5) The neophyte is usually put in a Scout squad and sent out to do sniping/scouting duties until the first bunch of implants mature.
    6) Once the neophyte's implants have matured and they have proven themselves on the battlefield, the last implant is added. This is the Black Carapace, which fuses to their nervous system, allowing them to control a full suit of Astartes power armour. After that, they join a Marine squad (often a Devastator or Assault squad) as a full Battle Brother.
The process takes a few years at most. So most new Astartes are pretty close to 7ft child soldiers, particularly Scout Astartes. Chaos legions do even less training and some of them will basically shove the implants into kidnapped children, then leave them to adapt to the changes, and if they survive, they survive.

About the similarities between Chaos and the God Hand, I think it's probably a question of similar influences. Both the original Warhammer Fantasy setting (from 1983) and 40k (from 1987) drew a lot of inspiration from popular fantasy and sci-fi of the time. The concept of Chaos originates from Michael Moorcock's work which was also a big influence on Miura. I suspect that both were drawing inspiration from this kind of Sword & Sorcery, Weird Fantasy and Sci-fi material (The line become very blured in some of those works), even if Warhammer does include a ton more High Fantasy elements than Berserk afaik.

A note about the iron warriors is the fact that they dont like the Chaos Gods, they dont even consider them to be gods.

the thing i like about bricky's run downs is that yeah not everything he says is accurate but its close enough for new people to understand and get interested and thats the whole point. We arent all lore nerds who know every single pattern of space marine armor by a glance so if theres an inaccuracy or two thats just something for people to go and learn later when they dive deeper into the hobby because something caught their interest and I think thats a pretty cool thing for Bricky to have accomplished.

It started around the same time as Berserk, late 80's/early 90's. Knowing Games Workshop's shameless plagiarism (once read a Guard novel that was literally just Dune) l wouldnt put it past them, but at the same time it could just be coincidentally similar ideas following the grimdark aesthetic.

So, the Dark Angels. The Emperor didn't send them when he wanted to make a public point (that's the Space Wolves), conquer and/or uplift (the Ultramarines), terrorise (Night Lords) or even take a 'no prisoners' approach (hello World Eaters). If the Dark Angels were specifically tasked to a foe, it was because that foe needed to disappear. *Completely*. Survivors gone, settlements razed and concreted over, page torn out of the history book, all references deleted and never spoken of again, the works.
When the bit of the Legion tasked with guarding Caliban and recruiting new Dark Angels decided that immediately after the Horus Heresy - you know, right as the Imperium was picking up the pieces and developing VERY STRONG OPINIONS INVOLVING ORBITAL BOMBARDMENTS on the subject of treason, rebellion, etc - was a good moment to secede from the Imperium, you can guess how the loyal chunk of the Legion reacted. The fact that they found out when Caliban's defences opened fire on the incoming fleet may possibly have sped this decision along.
You can also guess how the Chapter's upper echelons have continued to react when survivors from said whoopsie (the Fallen) kept popping up more or less at random around the galaxy. And how they may have reacted when, say, Inquisitors start sniffing around such incidents. Or the coverup of such incidents. Or the coverup of the coverup of the...you get the picture. The irony is that it's been hinted in a few sources that the Emperor and a few high level Inquisitors do know about the Fallen...and they don't care.

You are right 40k lifts a lot of things from other popular ips. I know a lot of people scream plagiarism and really, it's kind of skirting that line a lot. And I do mean a lot. But then you run into the problem with stuff like, well, everything based off Token. Depends on how much that bothers you. Get these weird circles though where you got Gears of War and Star Craft ripping off 40K which is ripping off Aliens. Or 40k rips off Battletech which just straight up bought Macross designs. Kind of a weird chain that forms that I find funny.

Explaining the confusing bits for 2nd and 11th Legions:
We know nothing about these 2 legions. Lore wise, their stories were completely removed from the archives of the Imperium by either Malcador or the Emperor himself. The other Primarchs were made to swear an oath to never mention these 2 legions, not even the 2 Primarch names, under threat of suffering the same faith as those 2 legions. As for the regular humans who knew of these 2.....well... the lucky ones were mind wiped, the other ones didn't live long enough to realize they were dead.

The Alpha Legion is, IMHO, the best and most badass faction in 40k. Their most incredible feats include:
    - Spending centuries indoctrinating recruits from a Space Marine fortress world. Once the time is right, the Alpha Legion activates the indoctrination protocols, and the Chapter fractures into a myriad of sub factions. In the chaos that ensues, the Alpha Legion swoops in and ransacks the chapter's stocks of armaments and gene-seed.
    - Saturating a planet called Seer's Rest with psychoactive gas, causing the psykers of the world to experience the same nightmare: an apocalyptic rain of venomous serpents. The dreams are so vivid that the gestalt of psyker energy manifests the rain of snakes into actual reality, and half of the population of Seer's Rest dies within a day. The Alpha Legion descends on the planet and abducts thousands of comatose psykers.
    - Through a combination of hidden agents and psychic hypnosis, Sorcerers from the Alpha Legion convince the Administratum (ie the Imperium equivalent of the Federal government) that the maps they have of the Avernia system are wrong. When the Alpha Legion attacks the system, psychic distress calls are launched and the Imperium diverts a formidable fleet from the rich world of Negligence to the false coordinates of Avernia, which ends up stranded in the wrong Segmentum. Both Avernia and Negligence fall to the Alpha Legion in less than a year.
    - Fooling the High Lords of Terra into sending a cadre of six Vindicare Assassins to eliminate an Alpha Legion warlord claiming to be Alpharius, the original Legion's primarch. The Assassins give chase for five years, and after that, their heads are found in the frozen food storage rooms of the High Lords of Terra.
    - Fooling the Inquisition into declaring them exterminated. Three times.
And to top it all off, WE DON'T KNOW WHETHER THEY ARE TRAITORS, RENEGADES, OR CLOSET LOYALISTS!
