The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

God does this classic song bring back memories from my time in Vietnam. I was a 21 year old Marine Scout Dog handler attached to various infantry units in the 1st Marine Division. In between operations we would rest our dogs, and ourselves, at our compound in DaNang. We had a hooch that on occasion served us 3.2 beer every now and a traveling USO Tour would appear. Usually a Filipino band of somewhat dubious talent would put on a show. They always closed with this song. Every time they the chorus of “ we got to get out of this place” we would shouted at the top of our lungs. Many of my friends never got out of this place!
I was lucky. Wounded twice but came home in March of 69.
Enrolled in college, earned two degrees and retired in 2013 after a great career in executive positions in the chemical business.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to those days when life was so precious to all of us. God bless my friends who didn’t make it back. I think of them always, and I’ve tried to live my life that would make them proud.
Semper fidelis .
I don’t know you my friend but your words of remembrance to your brothers in arms who never made it back from Vietnam hit me hard because I told one of my captains who was once a Marine in the early 2000, and survived the battles in Ramade Iraq but he lost some good friends. I said to him you are living for them and to remind us of them that they will never be forgotten!
Sadly my 2 yr old Uncle/Brother was killed in Vietnam. God speed!🤗
21 yr old, not 2😂
...Вы --- молодец!!
Ромчик из Саратова 🇷🇺🎩🎧🎼🎵🎶
His voice is so unique.
Yes
Thats someone from Newcastle trying to sound like his black R&B hero’s aha
And they performed live

One of the BEST signature bass riffs in rock in roll ever!!
True
Totally agree. One of the most iconic basslines in rock history. As a bass player, I love playing it (although it CAN be a bit tiring on your left hand!!) 😉
Lo
True indeed
That electric bass hits.
Yep!
This song requires the singer to put all his heart and soul into it and Eric delivers nicely. No one else could ever do it like he did. To him it was a passionate work of art.

Eric Burdon is one the best voices ever
And he still has it.
Saw him a couple of years ago, a lot of jazzy type stuff - and then he sang this, he was a teenager again, brilliant.
And few could pull off wearing a checkered suit like him.
Where?
I know!! Right??
I’ve loved his voice since I first heard it, I was around 9 or 10!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely agree
The #1 song for Vietnam Vets every where.
Love to Eric Burdon and the Animals.
The South Vietnamese Government refused to allow it to be payed of Armed Forces Radio
after awhile.
@@silverking1764
Silver King,
But they sure as hell couldn't stop it being played in every EM club from the Delta to the DMZ.
It was by far the most popular song of every GI in country.
👍
@@jimw.4161 God bless 'em all!

Silver King,
Amen!
👍👍👍
Is that true? Makes total sense though.
2023: as a teen I had a lousy part time job in a fast food joint. We quit at 11 pm - and always went out the door together singing this song. Great comradeship, great memories. I wonder where they all are now? Blessings my friends, where ever you are.
Such a great talent, his name should be listed as one if the best rocknrollers in history.
It is.
Amen.....some of best songs ever
This was my theme song the year I retired. I sang this song in my head all day. It sure helped me get through some miserable times. When I left the last day and was pitching stuff in the dumpster, I was singing this song out loud with a huge smile on my face!
I can’t help but think of all the Vietnam vets that must have listened to this song in this era. God bless you all.
Thank You SEMPER FI
Alan Price on the B-3. All original members. Playing live, no backing tape. Outstanding.
Yup. Then he'd leave the band after this Sullivan appearance.
Its Dave Rowberry
It's not Alan Price on organ. It's Dave Rowberry, who replaced Alan Price.
@@kevingoins9858 he left band after NME Poll Winners Concert in1965
@@thijswieringa5372 You are correct.
VIETNAM WAR ANTHEM. I was young during that era, but this song played EVERYWHERE. Great song!!!
YES USMC!!!!!!
Recently started listening intently to this band. There is an obvious reason....it's just good. It was good back then,it is good now,it will always be good.
You'll find a lot of hidden gems, in their music. One of my favorites is Sky pilot.
Ah yes me too
But Skypulot was with his Animals 2.0...in other words he broke up with his first great band.
One of the greatest singers ever.
This version was done live. Sullivan didn't usually allow backing tracks. You did what you did, you gave what you got.
Eric Burdon was the most underrated frontman ever!
He doesn't do anything tho he just stands there and sings like he doesn't occupy himself with an instrument or dancing
@@eziospaghettiauditore8369 doesn’t need to.
@@Tylerboyd2001 Fucking A
Not by me one of the best
That blues, jazz singing style, increible
This song embodies the 60's generational mindset. So many looked at the life the older generation was living and decided it wasn't the life they wanted.
Yep the programming was strong
Many of the problems of society today originated from that same mindset.
Vietnam war ....................
I got to meet their guitarist Hilton Valentine a few years ago. Great guy, signed all my animals stuff. Very sad he died last year
he died this year
Hilton lived the last part of his life in New England.
Qepd
I used to work with his wife at a factory in Newcastle England and got to meet him. Lovely people.
If only there was talent like this these days. Sadly not, the best rock/blues vocalist ever.
Change my mind?
I agree
Oh, there’s still talent, it’s just not what the record companies will promote. It’s not about talent, it all about sex and seductive dancing.
Dumbass young audiences don’t even realize that there is no way anyone can sing and leap about like a chimpanzee on stage without getting out of breath, so they play recordings.
They’re even trying to make it mandatory to put that on the tickets for the shows. They will have to say that it is recorded music. Some have complied, yet many still don’t.
check out the band Kaleo, they’ve got some stuff you could enjoy. also some of the best recent vocals i’ve heard from newer bands.
@TheLordMuzzy: That’s exactly what our parents said, and their parents before them and every parent since the invention of music. Anyway, I grew up with this music and I really enjoyed it and still kind of like it but today I personally know dozens of singers with vocal skills that make this guy and nearly everyone from the 60s - 70s pop scene sound like a kindergarten practise session for the Christmas concert, lol.
The Voice! This whole band slays.
That huge voice from that tiny young English guy. Wow.
No autotune here folks, just pure TALENT.
WHAT is autotune? Is it kind of like photoshop for musicians?
@@barbaram.7442 Autotune is an electronic device that can alter the pitch of the voice being fed into it. Unfortunately, most all musical "artists" of today use it regularly. In theory, it prevents the often embarrassing, bad notes or bad vocal pitch mistakes. Basically, it is talent in a box.
booooring comment who cares just enjoy the music. they didnt have autotune then, they didnt use it, get over it. music is music who cares
@@WAZOOMA Thrilling and intelligent reply. Get over it.
@@kodiakbearson8815 "most all" citation needed seriously lmfao. Probably less than 10% use it even if you are just talking pop.
@:41...check out that old guy’s reaction when Eric sings, “you’ll be dead before your time is through”...lol...PRICELESS
Incredible voice. Love the Animals -- songs are very edgy and sometimes dark.
The Animals always had an edge...Nice to see a live performance and not lip syncing.
This song has a great example of a musical "release".
When it finally gets to the chorus, I'm like....omg thank you Lol!
You're right! A great example of songwriting craft. Conversational verse, a ramping up pre-chorus into the 'release' of the chorus. That's why we still enjoy it today.
Happy 82nd Birthday Eric Burdon! 🎉🥳🎤🎵🎼🎶
OMG! One of the best vocalist to ever take America by storm. I love every one of the animals songs. My cousin was in the Vietnam War & he said The animals & CCR was all the troops listen too during their tour..
Pure gold ! And that octave range ! No “Pitch Shifter” here friends!
We saw this episode as children. I was 7. We watched Ed as a family and never missed it.
The expressions on some of the old timers in the audience was priceless!
Probably born in 1890s or 1900s
Brilliant. The British took over the music world in the 60s 🇬🇧👊🏼
Amazing vocal skills
Yes
What great voice Eric ! Excellent performance!!
Such an underrated band... Mr Burdon especially...
so blessed to have been a teen in the 60,s
Erik burdon Is justo puré
Talent his voice Is so
Unique Is fantastic
My favourite band! Greetings from Russia! Peace for all
There is not going to be "Peace for all." Only Peace to those souls of Good Will. The rest go to Hell. No Peace in Hell. Bob Dylan was right: Only Trouble in infinity. Those who don't go into Eternity with God will be "Time Captives." They will not have any rest day Nor night. That is an infinite number of days & nights. It never ends. It's Infinity. Make your choice. Infinity or Eternity.
Soooooo talented!
Amazing!!!!! LOVE THE ANIMALS 💖💖💖💖💖 Super video!
My high school band, The Beau Street Runners, Franconia, Virginia, played this and every other Animals song we could learn. I was almost 16 when I saw this live, here on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Spyder Logan - My high school band, The Other Side, played out at the Enlisted Men's Club on the Navy base in 1968. We had to do this tune multiple times every night! I'm still keeping my chops up. I wish you well, man.
Man he is so good the band is fantastic
Gosto da voz deste cantor
Happy Birthday (May 11, 1941) Eric Burdon ! I am a great admirer of yours. You are on of the greatest voices in Rock music. Rock on Eric, you are the man. Happy birthday my dear Animal !
The Animals preceded The Doors. I think when Jim Morrison heard Eric Burdon it was an important moment in the development of his own distinctive and powerful voice.
Jim Morrison had already Elvis to copycat with.
Oh 100%! I've always said this. The Doors were an Animals rip-off, they were still good (I won't deny them that) but they straight up were like "so you guys have an idea of how we wanna sound? YES, THE ANIMALS!" From the rhythms, the organ, even Jim Morrison trying to sound like the great Eric Burden..
LONG LIVE THE ANIMALS! 🔥
Remember hearing this on the radio a lot at one of my first jobs. I was thinking to myself, I've gotta get out of this place.
This song builds and builds with energy, great vocals 👌
I remember seeing this on TV. Great voice. So intense.
Wow !!
ERIC could SURE sing the blues! OMG...GIFTED singer!
The Truest Spirit of Rythm And Blues 💙

Just pure raw rock'in roll folks the way it's supposed to be played. 👍 Jimbo Mexican American, former US Navy radioman petty officer 86-96.
Don't think I've ever seen them play live like this before. Great
WOW ~ These dudes weren't lip-syncing. Outstanding and rare for that decade and a few that followed.
Great band. One of the best voices since the birth of rock.
❤
Animals were more intense than any other band
J adore les Animals ( I like this song and band!!😉😊)
I saw this when it first aired. Great show, absolutely live.
Real singing and instruments 🏆🎵🎶🏆
Fckem amazing those days will never come back
his voice!!! wauw!!
Props to The Animals for actually performing this live here. I get tired of seeing clips of, say, The Mamas and the Papas obviously lip synching. Eric Burdon sounds great here live!
I caught that too. They sound stronger live.
Eric still sounded great around 2016. His touring band included Greg Hawkes of The Cars on keyboards.
...and props to the Rascals, who caught the stage on fire whenever they appeared.
Yea, his vocal intro is amazing. So good live!
And if he ever did lip sync, it would be extremely obvious. He never stuck 100% to the recorded version live; which is nice; always cool for artists to mix it up live.
Powerfull voice.i discovered the blues from the animals.used to stay up all night picking up radio stations that played real delta blues artists.
Fantastic performance. I really enjoy these clips where the band is actually playing live. Too bad they didn't require this from all bands. The clips with live playing (Beatles, Doors, Animals, Elvis, etc.) hold up so much better than the lip-synced clips.
YES!!
Add the Mamas and the Papas to that list of terrible Sullivan performances. They are lip synching AND looking like they didn't care at all. One particularly offensely moment is Michelle Phillips eating a banana while she is supposed to be singing.
@@danithompson1693 honestly, it is understandable for them to act that way, many bands dislike having to lip-sync despite being the standard of 60s TV performances.
@@calbassist2494 With so many live performances on Ed Sullivan, one has to think that it was the decision of the band to sing live or to lip-sync on his show.
I had always understood that the tv programs MADE the bands lip sync because they were unable to get the audio correct for tv.
The bass is amazing.
Real music, this guy can still sing to this day.
Great song 🎶
What a voice
Очень жизнеутверждающая песня! Никогда раньше не думал Never before gave me a thought that the 'Animals are not animals, but people who are concerned with with other peoples' lives.
I remember being so excited that the Animals were appearing on Ed Sullivan. This video us a treasure.
Me too Victoria! I couldn’t wait to see them live! I loved their music. Where were you when you watched it? Take care!
This song holds true today. 2021
Favorite song of every man in Vietnam.
Sent my cousin (helicopter pilot) at least 4 copies as he wore them all out.
The animals we got to get out of here classic song from the sixties
so many good songs
Yes!!
I think they also performed “don’t let me down” on the same program. It had one of the earliest uses of the fuzz tone guitar that’s almost chilling to listen to.
Did he use the Rickenbacker 12-string? Wild!
The second song they played on the programme was 'Inside Looking Out'.
They performed 'Don't Bring Me Down' (Goffin/King) on 14 August 1966.

One of the greatest screams in rock and roll history. Bruce Springsteen once said this was every song he ever wrote.

Great Performance
Eric ... his voice ❤
My brother & sisters music era...I still love the tunes and my 38 year old kids do as well...
This was popular with many 19 year-olds, drafted and serving in a place they had barely heard of before 1965.

Eric burdon and the animals were one of the best bands ever back in the late sixties I started listening to him
Hilton was a great dude. I was lucky enough to chat with him and see him live many times locally, in his later years with Skiffledog.
Hoje esse cantor está com + de 80 anos e continua com a super vozzzzzz
Se deus quiser dia 11 de maio eric completa seus 82 anos
WONDERFUL!!
The old dude at the far right of the audience shot at 00:40 is thinking, "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place".
One of the great things about the Ed Sullivan show there was something for the old folks and something for the young folks. They endured the rock ‘n’ roll to get to the old fashion comedians and the circus performers
Michael Rochester Old fashioned comedy...🤔 Genuine laughter and not toilet bowl. My Grand Mother's Generation was genuine. My Grand Mother was always there for me. Unconditional, Love. They survived hell, and I do not think Eric would have caused any lasting damage to them or the Greatest, my parents. It was my Mother that bought my 45's every week at Musicland on her bowling day, downtown. She also bought my Mad Magazines. That was humor. Those days were so Eclectic, and with todays whatever they are in the moment; its they that cannot seem to handle or accept anything that deviates from their indoctrinating. Wouldn't you agree?

An iconic 60s british blues influenced rock song.
