Family were the most underrated group of all time. Their early concerts with Jim King on sax were unforgettable.

right; saw them twice in the 67's/68's : Jim king was a "plus"; everybody was high in their own ways, King seemed to like heroin, but I remember Whitney, greener than a leak, stuck in front of his huge Park cabinet standing on a chair, playing his twin necked Gibson the "family way": he did not strike the strings with the plectrum, but rather the opposite way: the guitar had a very psychotic movement and hit the plec when it was supposed to. Chappo could have been on speed or on acid and Townsend on his tempo-rubberish usual dope; exceptionnaly fine, but very scary.

@Chappomusic I saw them at least once for sure, in the Marquee club. Chappo was standing front stage, King on the left behind him, Townsend behind, then Gresch slightly behind right, then Whitney on the right .King (moustache) was staring at an invisible point far beyon reach, Chappo went berserk as soon as the first note was played. Whitney was as pale as an chicory, his adam's apple moving recklessly up and down. He played a huge Park amplifier standing on a chair 4x12, I suppose, so that he was squished between the cabinet and the stage brim. I attended the show at the second row and was frightened by Chappo large mic stand twirlings and tambourine devastations. Can't remember when; I was in London in august 1967, july 1968, july 1969. Sorry for my rotten english and my vintage recollections.

@@Chappomusic as an old pro drummer I can tell you that among hundreds of groups and musicians I had the pleasure to attend live during these 60 last years, Family along with the prog French group Magma have been the two most powerful and intense live acts I ever saw. when I saw Family, Chapman had short hair, was balding and had a love/hate tattoo on his fingers.

i never heard anything from their early band 'the farinas' but i have been blessed to have known family since its beginings, jim king on sax then, and they have taught and uplifted me throughout all the changes, theirs and mine.
'music in a dolls house' was first in 1968, (what a studio masterpiece) followed quickly by 'family entertainment' in 69. 'a song for me' came in 70 along with the 'live' release of 'anyway', 'fearless' was out in 71 along with 'old songs new songs' a remix of some of their past tracks. 'bandstand' rolled in in 72, and family's last album was 'its only a movie' in 1973. 1974 saw the moving on with john (charlie) whitney to form 'streetwalkers' and release the album of the same name. 75 and the added bob tench and hit me with 'downtown flyers' 76, the hard 'vicious but fair' album came in 77, and they got the 'red card' album released 79, solo album 'chappo' was released in 79 too. he worked with 'the shortlist' and released some wicked 'live' albums with them, 'he was she was' 'live in hamburg' there is much more than this dear reader, but what a foundation. i am in my 63rd year and wiser and happier for knowing 'family', i was so uplifted to find so much stuff about the 'unknown soldier'. thanx to all those who put stuff up. one love, jeff. (an old hippie still livin the life and being thankfull)

Thanks for filming this! Great entertainment from a great band. Their early work means a lot to me...orange sunshine days...and beyond. Somehow missed them when they played at the Marquee Club.

I wonder if that guitarist is the same from the later Procol Harum period, and who also did guitar with the early Roger Chapman solo. Can't remember his name at the moment...

It’s a miracle this bunch could do a reunion concert at all, so long after the remnants dispersed in the mid-70’s. For that matter, it’s a miracle Family existed at all. So much great, varied, complex music. Chappo sounds amazing!
I’ve been a big fan in the US (hence I just learned this exists) forever, got all the LPs from debut through Streetwalkers. These guys are playing stuff 40+ yrs after the original releases. It’s incredible how faithful it sounds for tough old guys who’ve been through the mill. I am grateful the recording exists.
